Fluid Diplomacy
I've been trying to work toward "fluid Diplomacy", where both my enemies and my allies can be exchanged in the blink of an eye. It contrasts with my earlier playing style where I was looking for a long-term ally to sweep 90% of the board with, hoping that would lead to a win / small draw.

Retreats broken?
Has anyone else been seeing retreats being allowed into the attacking space? I have seen this in a couple games was wondering if anyone else was as well before sending an email about it.

"The unit may not retreat, however, to any space which is occupied, nor to the space its attacker came from, nor to a space which was left vacant due to a standoff on the move."

The Diplomacy rulebook has a list of the standard abbreviations:

http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/resources/rulebooks/2000AH4th.pdf
Goloth (100 D)
20 May 12 UTC
I ask WebDiplomacy for courtesy's sake, of course, so that the interests (if any) of WebDiplomacy's players are not overlooked. It the same reason I have earlier asked Ludomaniac (German) and Stabbeurfou (French).

WebDiplomacy players whom the list does not interest naturally can disregard it.
Chanakya. (703 D)
20 May 12 UTC
I am not disregarding it , I appreciate your effort and read it once but Can i possibly remember all of them and use them in games...?
Goloth (100 D)
20 May 12 UTC
@SunZi: Thank you. I believe that the list already includes all the abbreviations you mention, but if you have noticed an abbreviation the list overlooks, I should be glad to learn of it.
Goloth (100 D)
20 May 12 UTC
@Chanakya: Thank you for your interest. To answer your question: I would not recommend memorizing the list. Indeed, at the moment, I would not recommend doing anything with the list at all, except to advise me if you miss a familiar abbreviation in it. The present list is a draft.

One thing is that by convention, sea zone abbreviations are all caps while land zones habe the first letter capitalized and the rest in lower case unless the zone is more than one word.
yebellz (729 D(G))

It seems that you have purposefully avoided collisions. In practice, NOR is very commonly used for several territories, although, I wouldn't advise that except in situations where context makes things very clear.

Similarly, I see people use Tyr all the time for both Tys and Tyo, but that is usually less confusing.
yebellz (729 D(G))
20 May 12 UTC
Are some of those in other languages? If you open up that possibility, combining across multiple languages, the list is nearly endless and collisions/confusion is almost inevitable.

I have come up with a non-exhaustive, 28 membered list of abbreviations for "Goloth", to call him by in Diplomacy games. An excerpt:

Gol, Golo, Golt, Gth, GoH, Goh, Goth (my favorite), Skyfighter, TheAmazingPlayer, TAP, Glt, Glh.

Please, if you feel that any essential abbreviations are missing, PM Gth about it.
Goloth (100 D)

@redhouse1938: Nice list. Thanks to you, I shall go down in history as the first Diplomacy player to be recognized by special abbreviation!

@yebellz: Thank you for reviewing the list. You are right about "Nor," of course. I do not know why Allan B. Calhamer used "Nor" explicitly for Norway in the 1971 rulebook, but he did, and the conventional use of "Nor" is at least that old. Worse is "Nrg," which does not recall "Norwegian Sea" to the literate eye, but "Norge," which is Norwegian for Norway; but it's in the 2008 rulebook, and that is that.

@Tru Ninja: I had forgotten about the convention you mention, but I seem to recall that you are right, now that you mention it: capitals are indeed sometimes used as you say. If you would remind me from where that convention came and in what, specific contexts it is or has been used, I would appreciate it. The reason I ask is that the convention you mention seems to be used in Diplomacy World neither currently nor in the Rod Walker era 30 years ago.... But, yes, I have seen that convention somewhere: I just cannot quite recall the memory. Please advise.

@Yebellz: You are right. The list honors the expressed preferences of players in Western languages you would be likely to meet, say, at a World DipCon championship. It covers no language speculatively, but only Western languages in which the Diplomacy-playing communities are large and long established. The Germans I have asked mostly seem to be used to using English-language abbreviations, except sometimes for spaces in and around Germany. The French on the other hand identify several of the map's spaces with alternate geographical places, such as St. George's Channel instead of the Irish Sea, and Odessa instead of Sevastopol. Other languages that may get coverage in the list to the extent their players want it include Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and the Scandinavian tongues, from each of which significant numbers of Diplomacy players have long been familiar to English-speaking Diplomats. Ultimately, the list is eclectic. It has no fixed editorial policy, other than not to omit what it should not omit and (contra Redhouse) not to be too terribly long, which is why I consult you as to what it misses.

Many Diplomacy players used to submitting their orders by a drop-down web interface, like WebDiplomacy's interface, may not find such abbreviations very interesting. I understand this, but if I am compiling a list that may be published, courtesy suggests that I ask WebDiplomacy's opinion.

@redhouse1938: Signed:

Best regards,

Goth

Is it possible to leave a live game? If not, I'd like to be able to. Sometimes something IRL will prevent me from finishing a game and this option would be useful because someone else could take my place. (I am guessing that's what the "open" tab in the games list is for)

Documentary recommendations?
Can anyone recommend a really good documentary? At the moment I am interested in the history of the European settlement of America. Maybe the Jamestown settlement or the Mayflower... that sort of thing. Anyone know of some decent docs which fit the bill (or any other great docs you think are worthwhile on any subject).
