Any interest in a 12 hour phase World diplomacy game with Public Press?
I think it would be fascinating. I think public messaging makes things more complicated. Also, you would see everything in the open. Would make it harder to multi... no?

Jack Layton
Leader of the official opposition in Ottawa and of the New Democratic Party, Jack passed away yesterday, losing his fight to cancer.
It's a sad day for Canada, as he was one of the very few passionate voices in Parliament.

About live games
If the people who joined a live game don't show up, it is the right thing to do, to cancel or draw the game, is not it?
So, today's question is: what is the appropriate name for those who refuse to and, enjoying an unfair advantage achieve an unearned win?
I personally would go with "douchebags".

DOMINION....and other board games.
Bought the game "Dominion" this Christmas for the family. I love strategy board games....*hate* "roll-the-dice-move-your-mice" games. Also own games such as Robo-Rally, Agricola, Pirate's Cove...

Has anyone else noticed
That the number of CD players has skyrocketed the past few days. There went from being about 100 open games to nearly 140. Are there a lot of multi's being banned or are people just leaving games as soon as they get in a tight spot?

I believe that the impending beginning of school is likely to be the cause of this problem.

We need to penalize CDs. Double the wager lost if you CD imo
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

I agree, there is not enough consequences for players who frequently CD.
Per Olander (1651 D(B))

especially players with less than 100 D, there really is no penalty to them, since they likely dont care about ratings, but only wants the points to be able to play more games.
I say, set up a percentage limit for resigns (and let ALL resigns count, both cancelled games, and games where you CD, and then get completely killed afterwards) - of course there should be an intro period or a warning system, so players who resign one of their first 10 games dont get kicked.
fortknox (2059 D)

this is why the veteran players start private games with those in the forums... prevent CDs that way.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
If your CD percentage is over X amount then the next time you CD you cannot play in any games until the game you left is over. This wouldn't hurt players who have to leave live games for real life reasons since live games end quickly. The first part is just optional having this effect everyone would be fine too.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
@fortknox, but I don't always want to go through the effort of setting up the thread and waiting to get 6 other people to join. Sometimes I just want to join the first new game that starts the soonest. I am sure I am not the only one who does this. Plus I have not been able to find enough pros willing to play a world variant game with me. I don't think the people who don't play world games realize how much of a problem CD's are in those games. I picked up a CD Quebec the other week and since then another 3 players have gone CD.
Ges (292 D)

I think Cachimbo has an excellent point about school starting up. Also, jmo, WorldDip is particularly prone to CDs because it has so many players to start with, lasts so darn long and, I suspect, attracts newer (and possibly younger) players. The best bet seems to be setting up private games. It does take some time to do so, but the quality of the chat and diplomacy makes up for the up-front time investment.

Personally, I make it a point to finish what I started. Case in point, right now as Italy I have one SC left in Trieste (don't even have my home land anymore) and I know I can't win. What I CAN do though is try to hold off until one of those people who have been my ally all along can come and take me. I'd rather my true friends take me versus those I've been fighting with all along.
Ges (292 D)

FA, I am a pretty bad player (note my record given the amount of time I've been playing). But I love fighting rear-guard actions as the small rump power I nearly inevitably become. Horse-trading to survive one more year, plugging one small part of the stalemate line to push for a draw, throwing grit in the gears of a Juggernaut or FG . . . It is solid gold. Such play might not net a high Ghost Ranking, but it is fun and really raises the estimation that stronger players hold one in.
Ges (292 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
One caveat, though, FA: There are no "true friends" in Diplomacy. There are only folks who, in their current risk-reward analysis, consider keeping you alive and working with you a better bet than moving to eliminate you. Their calculus will change over the course of a game, and yours should as well.
FirstApple (100 D(B))
22 Aug 11 UTC
@Ges - I realize there are no real 'true friends' but one who has been an ally from the beginning and followed through on their promises without a backstab is what I'm talking about. Thus if I'm at a point where I'm soon to die and my demise is inevitable, I'll 'invite' those friends to take my remaining SC versus letting the incoming juggernaut just roll me over and add me to their growing empire. It's sort of a reward for being 'true' to me.

any such actions would simply encourage the CDers to abandon their less than 100 D account and start a new one.

Which would make it harder to track them and see how likely someone is to CD in the first place.

Private games with people you know from the forums is one good option. Though i know a lot of newer players will take a while to become known (and our pool of players will be slow to increase) but we all had to start somewhere...

if you're playing a public game and somebody CDs, you can ask a mod to force pause the game while you look for a replacement, or have the other players vote to cancel/draw and start a new game with the same players... (it's always good to get to know your enemy and then play again against them, it helps test your diplomacy...)

Just to be clear on the rules
Can two units of your own completely switch places without bumping? For example, you've got an army in Norway and a fleet in Sweden... can you order the fleet to Norway and the army to Sweden without them bumping or are they going to bump?

Do conservatives make better Diplomacy players?
One would think so. A certain amount of ruthlessness is needed, so does having a "me first" political ideology give one a heads up in that area?

Alternatively, are liberals more successful at forcing a draw in WTA? By the same token, one could assume that they would be more successful at sacrificing their own potential for the greater good. Thoughts?

Talk diplomacy
Well, basically, I have the idea that in terms of diploming (in FTF, mostly) that it might be better to wait for someone else to approach you with an idea, rather than approaching someone else to discuss something. Thoughts?
