School Of War: Winter 2011 Semester
So, reading some random threads, I've noticed people sporadically bringing up the School of War series. I'm creating this thread to see if there is enough interest, maybe we can set up a new semester's worth of games after the winter holidays... share your thoughts, indicate your interest, or volunteer your veteran services below

Ignoring the Franco-Prussian War are we?
I mean really it's Chapter One of the modern Franco-Prussian conflict that lead to WWI & WWII. It's also the only one that the Germans won. Alsace Loraine wasn't a big issue until the Germans took it in that war.

THIS Is Why I Am Disillusioned About Democracy As It Is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Tucson_shooting
That's despicable. I don't care if you're a Red or a Blue or a Green or Libertarian or Communist or Facist, if you support gay marriage or not, abortion or not, if you like Obama or not, Palin or not--Plato, ultimately, was right, is right: either you have a dictatorship or a corrupted democracy. Pick your poison. Our political system, now, IS poisoned...and must be changed, this CANNOT HAPPEN...

Crazy Anglican, just curious....
Hey Crazy Anglican, does your grandmother go by the name: "Swedish Mountains"? My grandpa used to bang out this swedish girl near Chicago just after the Korean War. He said she spoke in a 1/2 swedish accent n was worlds of fun, in alll seriousness. Just askin.

I recently played in a game where I have strong evidence that a player was using a multi and has a history playing with that multi in a previous game. Could someone tell me what is the email address of the mods please?

How much effort do you put into thinking about your moves?
Ivo_Ivanov said recently that he usually plays around eight games a time. I find this amazing considering how well he does in his games.
The only games I have ever won, I have worked really hard at. I have set up positions using jDip and played through every scenario I can think of. But this is quite time consuming. Lately I have become very slack, indeed I might as well play live games. How hard do you try?
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I can't do 8 games at a time. At least not well. But that usually takes care of itself. 3 or 4 games is comfortable, preferably at different stages of the game. Mid and late game requires a lot of planning, especially when figuring out what HAS to be done to stop the big guy from soloing.
I'm playing about 8 games right now. That seems to be the comfortable zone for me. I don't know, but just a standard 24 hour game in itself can get boring after a while, so I need a lot of action to keep me constantly "in the zone" I guess. Plus, many of my games have little or no communication in them sadly, even though I try (that shows what quality they are), so there is actually very little diplomacy to do each phase

@goldfinger, "staying in the zone" is very important, I agree.

2-3 games which I concentrate on very much.

other games like Gunboat battles etc... seem to take far less concentration.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

i'm also playing around 8 games most of time, but it is really important how many time you have and how many time between phases, or it is a gunboat or not, for the people that are not really nice to me and look in others profiles it also matters or its anonymous, and the map can also be important because the beginning at the normal map you already know most of times... (even if you haven't played the particular country you have seen others play it and you can see what is your style...) that about what for game it is...

than you also say it takes long because you look at any possible scenario, well, i don't know how others do that but personally i always see the few moves that can be the best, so i don't need to look at the rest, and everything about those few moves i figure out in my mind, and ok, maybe not everything but enough to see wich move is best...
and i also look at what is the move after the best because other people (that are good, doesn't work as good with new people...) most of times move in the knowledge you do the best move and if you do other moves that are even better when the other tries to move against your best moves you get those, but still you only look at 2 variants per game most of times and i am playing a few hours a day on teh computer and i look at this site sometime or i have to do something and otherwise i go back to black ops :)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
15 Jan 11 UTC
I MIGHT play 2 or, at MOST, if I were FORCED TO, 3 or 4 games at a time...

But usually I like one game at a time to DEEPLY consider my moves...when I play live I try and suck every second out of it I can, I'll finalize, but NOT before I've thought everything through to my fullest abilities and wants.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
15 Jan 11 UTC
i like live games because you have to eb fast and there is no one that can think longer then 5 minutes, it is more action and faster thinking, much more fun but i don't have 3 hours to play 1 most of times...
now i have BTW, http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=47034 :)

i used to play more than 5 regular games this summer but i found that uncomfortable because i might swap one game for another. now i play one game until midgame and then start another one.

What is JDip Some kind of move simulator?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
15 Jan 11 UTC
I think about my moves maybe for like..... 1 minute tops. I don't know if that's abnormal.

Usually the moves just make sense. What takes a long time is reading people's messages. Sometimes there isn't an obvious answer so I take longer, but that's the exception.

Especially near the end of games where there is less negotiating to be done, I tend to enter orders very quickly. What I am really bad about however is getting around to entering the moves - I put it off for a while.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

thats not abnormal to me...
and i have also no idea what JDip is but i guess a simulator...

jDip is a java based Diplomacy simulator. google it.

I'm now at around 8 games, though i'm not joining any more since i'm having exams in 5 days, but i find it ok to be in even 15 games. It does not take that much time, i may spend like a hour daily, maybe more depending on the press. The move-thinking is not really absorving, what takes most of my time is, in mid-game, thinking about reachable stalemates, how to reach them, and if i'm able to get the 18.

I don't think the simulator is really worth it, since usually you can figure the outcome yourself.

Thucy - I agree completely. I see the moves that need to be made in order to achieve an objective very quickly, so I spend about 2 to 4 minutes on each map entering moves and reading/writing messages. On some live games (especially gunboat) I go into overdrive and can play two or three live games at a time - though sometimes I make a mistake and then get screwed :P

I average about 10 games at a time (12 right now) with an average of 2 games per type that I like (Standard map, World map, Ancient Med map, Gunboat, Anonymous, etc.).

I'm always willing to start a new one too so anyone should message me if they want to play! (that's probably why my points keep dropping steadily - I'm in too many!)

I usually have around 30mins to burn in the middle of the day, and an hour later, so I usually can think through the moves of my 7-8 games fairly well.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

I'm playing 9 games at the moment, and will often play live games over the top of this.

I usually have 3-4 key games I concentrate on though, and others that are outside of that zone. The key games I will analyse a lot, the others not so much.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

I used to play 4-5, but tournament organising and mod stuff knocked that down to 1-2 as a preference.

I've gone to 3 since slowing down my involvement with tournaments and modding, but I'm getting back into tournaments as a player, which will give it about 5ish.

I like being as active as I can when active, and then dropping down to 1 game for a rest from time to time. I think some time to not play is really important to stay on top of the game, otherwise it can become wearing, and then you don't give it the attention it needs.

Sitter for the Weekend?
You would have two games (though 1 has 2 day phases so you would probably only have to enter I set of moves. The other has 24hr phases). Pretty straightforward games as well. Post if interested.

Seem to be having a bug ordering a convoy.
Hello,
I am ordering a convoy in a game. I fill in the first two boxes, and then try to fill in the third box (where to convoy from).
The browser seems to pause for a few long seconds, then I get a message saying that a script is having a problem. This happens on 4 different browsers that I've tried on 3 different operating systems.
Does anybody have the same problem? What should I do about this?
