Is Everyone on this Site an N on Meyers Briggs? Why?
I read that 81% of the population tests as S(detail-oriented). So why are so many people on this site an N (big-picture)? I am a very strong N so I am curious

I think being an N makes for a better diplomacy player. People who return an 'S' on Meyers-Briggs are probably the silly types who treat dip as a wargame, and fail to understand how to properly play it.

It also seems that about half the people on this site are I and half are E, that makes sense.

As for T versus F, there are more T's and that makes sense-people at work and on an analytic site will be more in thinking mode than feeling mode (I test both ways--T at work and F at home).

As for J versus P, there are more J's and that makes sense, although I expect the "go with the flow" types like MM to test as a P.

But why are there no detail-oriented S types on this site? Especially if they are 81% of the general population?

I find Meyers Briggs suspect at best.

Not all of these things are mutually exclusive and some of the questions are vague enough that I could really answer them either way and still feel like I'm being honest.

S and N are *not* mutually exclusive. I would go so far as to say that a good diplomacy player has to have both. S to keep track of everyone's messages, where all the units are, correct orders, etc. N to look into the future and figure out what moves imply, etc.

I suspect this is an artifact of the test, more than the players.

Odd that S = detail oriented, I think of myself as extremely detail oriented, yet I am an N, hmmm... Crazy, I was a J to the 100th percent, can't get more anti-P than that!
Crazyter (1335 D(G))

@Madmarx, I totally don't get that. Maybe I just don't understand J versus P. I thought J likes to methodically plan ahead while P likes to perceive, sniff out and go with the flow, which is how you often describe what you are doing. I hope you or someone can sort this out for me.

@abgemacht I agree with you that there are artifacts of the test. T and F are not mutually exclusive, I think I am high on both, I can answer them either way and I even switch off depending on what role/situation I am in. I think they even call that "situational". Now on S and N, I can do both, and some people think I am good with details, but I don't really like to focus on the individual trees, I like to look at the whole forest, so I consistently test as a very strong N. So I am not "situational" about S and N, I am consistently N.

You have to watch the online "Myers-Briggs" tests. Myers and Briggs are real people who designed and copyrighted a test. Their version has significant problems (mostly that it's easy to figure out which questions produce which results). A lot of the online versions are of even more questionable validity.

I took a "Myers-Briggs II" which broke down each category into 5 factors. That was helpful...I've tested about 80% F. According to the factors, I'm basically 100% F in 4 factors, but I'm 100% T in the "questioning/accepting" factor--in other words, I challenge the assumptions and logic behind anything I'm told and take nothing for granted.

@Crazyter

Yeah, basically a highly developed/mature person will be good at functioning as an N/S or T/F whenever they need to. HOwever, everyone still has a dominant side, and that is what the test tests for.

Crazy, I can't tell you how many people have called me methodical in my life about various different things. I'm 100% a planner, live a structured life, and not very spontaneous. I am a J to the extreme, just as my test showed: J - 100.

The problem with diplomacy is I have absolutely no foresight whatsoever. I have no idea what will happen even one turn out. I'm an INTJ, a Mastermind. I read that Mastermind's put efficiency ahead of everything else. So, for me, I REALLY want to plan out moves for years at a time, and when I started playing diplomacy I did just that, but I soon realized how inefficient I was being because things would always get all messed up by unanticipated moves, so then I'd get right back to planning out another couple years very precisely, then unexpected things would happen and I'd be back at the drawing board. Eventually I learned to not waste me time and not look too far ahead.

Also, here's another bit about Masterminds: "But before [Mastermind's] decide anything, they must do the research. Masterminds are highly theoretical, but they insist on looking at all available data before they embrace an idea." So, again, since I can't anticipate, I must wait for orders to get processed to have "all available data" to analyze for the next set of moves.

So, Crazy, does that make more sense? I'm good at coming up with a general game plan and working with others in a game of diplomacy to get to the ultimate goal, but exactly how my ally/allies and I get there is often much different than anything I could have thought up ahead of time, which I assume is really how it works for everyone.
I'm a combo INTP/INTJ, which is strange because I can get obsessed with details, and I'd consider myself detail-oriented.
I'm an INTP

Does anyone have a theory of why there are so many N's on this site? That was my original question, and so far,no one has proposed any theory.
Crazyter (1335 D(G))
14 Aug 10 UTC
@MM-yes it makes perfect sense. I think your "go with the flow" is your polite way of telling someone to hold on/get lost for a bit. You can't make up your mind yet because you haven't yet heard back from all the other players so you don't yet have all available data, therefore you can't yet embrace a specific idea
It's a game about intuition. There is very little hard data to analyze, it's more about talking and making predicitions from what others have or haven't said.

Wish corruption game
Make a wish, then watch as someone grants the wish but tears your life apart as a result. When you tear someone else's wish apart, you should post one yourself.

Remember, YOU MUST GRANT THE WISH! ...And you only get one wish in your post.

'Restart' vote option
I have found that in many live games that I play a round of NMRs or CDs in the first couple of years leads to a draw or cancel by the 7 players (or whoever remains) and the game is typically restarted. It might save a lot of hair-pulling if people had the option to just vote 'restart' and the server resets the phase to Spring 1901 Diplomacy. Thoughts?

How About An Irish Drinking Song?
If you've ever seen the Irish Drinking Song/Hoedown segment on either the American or UK version of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" then you know what I'm talking about (and if you haven't: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WInazZlafQ) So--you can only have every fourth post, just like you have every fourth verse on the show, let's get some songs a-going, first--The "Drunken Atheist" Irish Drinking Song! So, all in fun, and a one and a two and a--

playing with friends
is it okay for two friends to join a game and work together to conquer the world? Cause one of my friends said that the whole point of playing it online was to play with strangers not people you know. Any comments?

Which are you?
From what I've heard and seen, it seems to me that most people are in one of two groups: good at the diplomacy, not so good at tactics; good at tactics, not so good at the diplomacy.

Straw poll on political persuasion: left, centre, right
Some people think that this forum is quite left-wing while others think it tends to the right. I think it is fairly balanced but a little more right-wing than left. But I could be wrong.

The usefulness of PMs is seriously reduced because there is no notification for them, like in-game messages. I realize this is due to some technical restrictions, so here's a suggestion for the time being.
