Question about time limits
I am new to phpDiplomacy and have been playing my first game which has fast (9 hour) time limits per phase. However, I have noticed that the time limits seem to randomly change from phase to phase. I am guessing that the program aborts the time limit and moves to next phase if everyone (not currently in civil disorder) has finalized their orders or have no orders to give. Correct? This makes it hard to plan your times for logging on and entering next orders.

Advance note - players searched for high-level quality game
Hello all! Been busy for the last months, but I'm planning to take on few games after 2-3 weeks when there will be less rush. I'm thinking about 2 games with 48hour phases - one WTA, one PPSC, pote size is rather irrelevant (is negotiable), decent players with decent records are searched. If You would be interested, put Your names down here.

help
In game Phase 10, I just sent Bohemia to Munich supported by Kiel and Ruhr. Austria sent Munich back at Bohemia supported by Silesia. Nobody cut anybody's support, but for some reason, my 3 bounced with his 2. This makes no sense; it must have been a bug. Admins, can you fix it? Thanks.

I learned a hard lesson today
...and I just need to vent about it.
Darwyn (1601 D)
08 Apr 09 UTC
I have nowhere else to vent about it, so my apologies.

Had a good thing going with an "ally" once and actually got stabbed because I spoke too openly about plans.

Essentially, I got stabbed for talking TOO much. For thinking it would be wise to discuss all our options in the open.

I was told that it had nothing to do with anyone else...but my own attempt to discuss plans. No one else convinced him, except ME!

I stabbed myself! I am more than irritated about it cuz it's never happened to me.

Is this something that happens? Can anyone else relate? Have you ever been stabbed for speaking too much? And I don't mean being caught in a lie...just for discussing different scenarios with your "ally" that he felt it just too suspicious for you to be believed?

I'd like to keep this as general as possible.

I might do the same in that person's position. You always have to be careful about how much you reveal, and what you reveal. This is Diplomacy. Nobody's really your ally. I don't think I've been very open with my moves unless I'm organizing a grand alliance that needs extremely fine tuned and coherent co-operation.

i don't understand, you might as well explain it in detail
Darwyn (1601 D)
08 Apr 09 UTC
Well, without getting into specifics, we sorta needed to be somewhat revealing if either of us were committed.

But, I understand the whole "nobody is your ally" thing.

I just needed to vent and, literally, there is no one I can vent to. I am the only person that I know that plays this game.
Darwyn (1601 D)
08 Apr 09 UTC
I can't really get into specifics, it wouldn't be right.

I'm not looking for an analysis, I know I F'ed up...just wondered if anyone else had experienced something similar.
dangermouse (5551 D)
08 Apr 09 UTC
I can see that happening. Most people don't communicate enough here, but sometimes it's like "Just shut up already and play the game".
lazysummer8484 (0 DX)

yeah, just take it as a lesson i guess
;)
OMGNSO (415 D)

Perhaps its not the exposition but the content. If you kept suggesting plans he thought favoured you, its not long until you stab him, so he has to stab first.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

Happens from time to time - you can never know for sure whether it is better to discuss plans and share ideas and when you cross the limit and someone decides to take advantage of it.
The opposite happens also (someone stabs you because they have no clear visibility for the long-term).

It will pass - start a new game and kill someone :)

I have Darwyn, and to use an overused expression, I feel your pain!

A couple of nasty stab wounds later, and I try and keep vague, without posting my orders too much, or revealing too much of my hand. It's so frustrating sometimes, but it's all swings and roundabouts. Just look for the next opportunity you get for the opposite way around!
fortknox (2059 D)

I've experienced the same for the opposite...

Basically, because I kept my cards so close to my chest with an ally, he stabbed me anticipating I was going to stab him.... d'oh.

There's a comfortable medium... but its tempting to share all with a great, long ally...
Onar (131 D)
09 Apr 09 UTC
I kind of like sharing a lot. Sometimes, I wind up making promises I can't keep, though.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

If people don't share with me, I pre-emptively stab them for failing to be trustworthy.

Reminds me of a friend's strategy: Keep talking, and they won't stab you. Works against me ^^
Braveheart (2408 D(S))

Darwyn - i'd say that 8 or 9 times out of 10 this will not happen and in fact more press is to be encouraged. Generally (and only generally) the more open an ally is the more sincere his overtures to you are likely to be.

It just shows you that everything in this game is situational... nothing works 100% of the time.

I am not sure how you can predict what happened to you in your current game... perhaps look for some clues in their previous press?

LoL.. I usally tell everyone what I'm going to do, even my enemies. Nobody ever believes me anyway. It seems to continually confound everyone how I actually do what I say I'm going to do. Come to think of it, I probably fall exactly into the category you are talking about. I talk so much that I MUST be trying to pull a fast one... hmm... I must meditate now.
Darwyn (1601 D)
09 Apr 09 UTC
Thanks fellas! I'll probably have to rethink my strategy from now on.

Braveheart - I wish I could reveal more because the question you asked is very pertinent. In fact, I suspected a stab based on his press and some sound logic. We talked it out and actually built a rapport. And that's when I felt comfortable enough to discuss our options openly.

I even accused him of planning it all along, but he assured me it was due to my open discussion. So who really knows, eh?

This stab rivaled only one other stab I received...but it was in a game that I was already down and out, so it wasn't as impactful. I think I'm pretty good at judging when a stab is coming (whether I weigh it's likelihood as being imminent and to be acted upon is another story) but I never even saw this one coming. I suppose that what makes a good stab though.

Private Messages
I just read in the development forums that the gamemaster is supposed to Private Message you at the end of the game with the game conclusion.

I don't read the forum much - way to difficult UI, and way too many political discussions - but is that really implemented? I see no way to send/receive Private Messages.
