Monetization via distributed processing ?
After the trial a week ago distributed processing seems to be a potentially effective way to monetize the site without irritating ads or premium accounts. It's not as lucrative, but it is better and more consistent than donations, and it would still provide an incentive for me to work on the more mundane coding which I'm otherwise not interested in

I think most people would gladly trade some (otherwise unused) CPU usage while playing to see further development on the site (and perhaps leave their browsers open as an alternative to direct donation).
But I'd like to hear from those who experienced crashes a week ago, it was the only negative aspect of the trial and it seemed to only be a small subset of Firefox 3.0.1 users, so hopefully it can be resolved and I can go ahead with it

Why was Good Times-2 drawn?
Not all of the players voted for a draw, and now I have received less points than I paid to buy-into the game.
Could a Moderator/Administrator explain and possibly rectify the situation?

Massive NMR's in -01 why do you punish yourselves this way?
I just looked at the open games and found two that stand out with 3 or 4 countries that did not move in 1901. Why are you all remaining people playing these games? Call for a draw and end the misery. It is not Diplomacy if you do not have 7 active players.

Rules Download
New to the game and the site... where do I download a complete set of rules? The obvious ones I get, but the more remote ones I'm having trouble with. For instance, if I make an attack out of a country, can an army retreat into it from if dislodged out of another area (not where the attack is directed)? Is my support to a third country cut when the army attacking me is dislodged?

I took over a cd in game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6148 only to find that all the other players had voted for a draw in a paused game. What are our options now? If I allow the game to be drawn, what is my return on my investment in points? Might I be permitted to be removed from the game, as if I had never joined, so that I do not take a "draw"?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

If you draw, you will break even.
spyman (424 D(G))
27 Oct 08 UTC
The game in question was ruined by a multi-accounter. After he was expelled the remaining players voted to draw, which was then passed by the system. I think the only reason TheMasterGamer was able to join was that it was still paused.
@TheGhostmaker, don't you received 1/nth of the pot where n is the number of remaining players? I joined for 60. The pot is 276. There are 6 players remaining.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
true, sorry, its that you break even if you finish with the same SC count, my mistake.
Same sc count as what? As we have not moved, I would end up with the same sc count as I started with.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

You will have lost out slightly, as you pay for what the SC's are worth at that minute. However, once the funds for you joining have been added to the pot it is obviously worth less

I'd suggest a change to the 'cheating scum' protocols - kick out the cheaters, but give the people currently in the game 24 hours to decide if they want to draw, or just /unpause and pound on the CD player(s) without giving someone else a chance to step in and grab a superior spot.

Since both /draw and /unpause need to be unanimous, it would require consensus for any actions, and would prevent this kind of thing from happening as often. I also wonder if it wouldn't be useful to allow global press to be visible to everyone, not just those playing.

I'm also going to take a net point loss on this game, but it's hard to blame the players who have been victimized from wanting a fresh start

I am a little confused on the sequence of events that seem contradictory to me, but maybe I am missing something or there is a bug:

1. A draw vote requires a unanimous vote
2. CD powers do not vote
3. If the draw passed it had to be before the CD power was replaced
4. The game is over when the draw passes
5. therefore the player should NOT have been able to join the game
so either there is a BUG somewhere or I am missing something.

dangermouse (5551 D)

As Edi says, either someone did not vote for the draw before you took over or we've got a bug.
Sequence:
1. Boot multi-accounters
2. Multi-accounter nations are placed in cd
3. Mods paused the game
4. Draw vote happens while game is paused and passes, but cannot be attacked upon until the game is unpaused.
5. While game is paused, someone may take over a cd nation.
6. The trouble with tribbles and the position we now find ourselves in.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
27 Oct 08 UTC
The draw vote was complete; the game was still in the process of being unpaused. I personally think the draw should trump the pause, but that's me
As it stands now, it effectively takes several things at once for Edi's vision to take place.
1. all remaining players need to carrying on with diplomacy
2. all remaining players need to get normal orders in
3. all remaining players need to vote draw
4. all remaining players need to vote unpause
5. everyone has to hope that while 1 through 4 are going on no one else joins the game
6. everyone has to hope that the last player to unpause did also vote for a draw and not just continue the game

Figlesquidge, I've been corrected on this one and verified it. The cost to join is based on the size of the pot *after* you join, not before (or the number of non-SC centers before you join, I think that is the same thing). If you join and the game immediately ends by a victory on someone's part, you break even.

Of course we are talking a draw, so that does not apply here. In that case, if you joined with less than sc/n (sc=# of SCs controlled by non-CD powers after you join, n=# of non-CD Players after you join) you gain, more you lose.
dangermouse (5551 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
Hmm, that is a code issue that should be addressed, if a draw is unanimously voted for, it should process - even if the game is paused.

I can draw the game now for you, can I get some confirmation from the rest of the players that they still want it?
It is likely that we will need to have a "locked" game setting that the mods can set when they need to do what they did and a corresponding "unlock" by vote . Thus allowing time for the remaining players to decide what they want to do without allowing another player to enter the game.
@Dangermouse
First, I am asking if there is a way to remove me from the game as if I had never joined it prior to you manually drawing it. Statagos may desire the same thing.

Plus one of the original players who was hurt by the multi-account situation, Italy, is still in the game, but without any sc's. Will he be eliminated if we draw the game and thus not receive his fair share? What can we do for him if this is so?
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
27 Oct 08 UTC
A draw should go forward regardless of whether or not its paused, and draws split points equally among all surviving players. If Italy isn't yet defeated they're a surviving player

When you take over a country you pay the amount that the units are worth, however in a draw you don't get paid what your units are worth you get paid an even split so you may lose out or benefit
@kestasjk,
Either the game does not actually go forward with a draw while the game is paused or I happened to have joined within the 5 minutes the cron job timer uses to execute the orders.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
27 Oct 08 UTC
Kestas, in the game in question, I joined (taking the first of two CD accounts), but agreed with the group that a draw was the only fair solution. We had completed the draw, received the "your game will end in five minutes message", but nothing happened. We then began the process of unpausing the game, thinking that was the issue, but MasterGamer joined before that process was complete. I believe that he is now waiting to see if he can be removed - if not, I assume he'll unpause and (probably) draw.

If I can be easily removed, great. If I can't, I'll eat the point differential. I think I'll be down about 20 points, but that just motivates me to kick butt in other games to get it back.
@kestasjk,
"When you take over a country you pay the amount that the units are worth, however in a draw you don't get paid what your units are worth you get paid an even split so you may lose out or benefit".

I did not find an explanation of this "worth" determination in the FAQ. Can you explain it and possibly add it to the points section of the FAQ?
stratagos (3269 D(S))
27 Oct 08 UTC
I think it works like this:

Joining an existing game = current pot / # of claimed SC (up to 34) multiplied by # of SCs of the person you're taking over.

IE: 1000 point pot / 34 = 29 PPSC. If you take over someone with three SCs, you'd pay 87. The pot would then be 1087, and each SC would be worth 32 points at the end game.

Hi Mods, can we get a decision on this, one way or another, so we can wrap it up?
dangermouse (5551 D)
28 Oct 08 UTC
It may be possible for kestas to manually pull MasterGamer out of the game, but we mods cannot do anything about it. So unless you hear from kestas, and I suggest you email him, then your only option is draw.

Cheaters
In a recently initiated game (Good times-2), 5 accounts were made and joined a 100 point game all together and all within one hour of each other. Additionally, they all submitted and finalized orders within this same hour and all appear to be working toward the two countries not controlled by the suspected owner of the 5. If you look at england's opening in particular, the move to Clyde seems odd.

This is just a quick notice that I'm planning on killing my yahoo mail account. This means that I would like to open a new account on this site using a different email/password. I will not be joining any single game with both accounts and I plan to let the games on my yahoo associated account wind down before I switch.
