Question for Kestas
in game: http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5155

we're waiting for France to retreat, but I can't figure out why. He has been holding his last unit in Paris for several turns and no one has been able to take him there including last turn. But since he doesn't have much interest in the game, he doesn't care about putting his orders in. I understand that and while annoying, I don't fault him. But there's no reason the rest of us should have to wait the entire cycle when he doesn't have any retreat orders to make. Can you explain? Or maybe even force the finalize?

Thanks in advance

Inflation
Wow, When I joined the minimum for the top 100 was just at 600, 5 months ago. Now I'm 101st with 880 points. 280 points over 5 months, which on 600 is 47%, 9% per month (avg).

Following this, on my anniversary, I estimate that the points for the top 100 will be >1270. That's 112% inflation rate over a year.

Unique Games
So i found this game while looking at other peoples games and this one in particular caught my eye.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3627

I find this game extremely unique bc
1) neither england, france, or germany was eliminated within at least 6 turns and neither one was forced to move away from its home sc's like austria.
2) the game is, oddly enough, very well balanced at the end, with of course the exception to the winner.
3) this game was not rigged by a meta but had the end results that look like one that the meta just moved the units of the other countries out of the way of his own.

Basically i was just wondering if anyone has seen a game like this one you know something extremely unorthodox like the person who won was missing a home sc or anything crazy in general.

Rating system vote
See thread "Ranking system" for details on the systems.

everyone places one vote for their preferred ranking system. note that Kestas will not program any new system, and it must be tested on an alternate server if it is to be implemented.

we add up the votes, and if an alternate ranking system wins, everyone who is willing to help develop it should start working.

the options are:

1. Current point system.
Pros: proven to work/stable. helps separate new from experienced players.
Cons: susceptible to inflation, and cheating. same reward for beating anyone, as long as they have the points.

2. Zarathrusta's proposed system.
Pros: supposedly more accurate.
Cons: supposedly more inaccurate.

3. Elo ratings
Pros: solves all problems of current point system.
Cons: too much effort.

4. Other (post in your reply, along with P/C).
Pros/Cons: who knows what.

Why I quit Diplomacy
Here is the Austrian Emperors last ditch effort to stay alive long enough for help to arrive. I turn to once Proud Russia's final unit in Galicia for some help.

Tue 03 AM (Austria, Me) Autumn 1904: not for nothing but I never crossed you, could you help me out with your last orders?
10:20 PM (Russia) Spring 1905: what do you want help with?
03:56 AM (Austria) Spring 1905: support vienna into budapest?
11:32 AM (Russia) Spring 1905: done

*I Bounce with no Turkish support on Budapest and no support from Russia*

07:14 PM (Austria) any reason you left me out to dry?
07:16 PM (Russia) order history...
Russia:
The army at Galicia support move to Vienna from Budapest.
07:17 PM (Austria) What? It was supposed to be veinna into Budapest. Are you kidding me? Why would I want you to support budapest to vienna?
07:18 PM (Austria) translation: you got it backwards

Question re what army movement & outcome
French army Burgundy moves to Belgium
French army Marseilles moves to Burgundy
French army Paris supports Marseilles' move to Burgundy

German army Rhur moves to Belgium

Because the two units moving into Belgium are moving with equal force, neither wins, and thus there is a stand-off.

Does the French unit return to Burgundy, pushing the unit now in Burgundy back to Marseilles, OR does the unit now in Burgundy remain in Burgundy, and thus the unit that failed to occupy Belgium obliged to retreat to a contiguous empty space (such as Picardy)?

League system announcement
We now have 35 players in our league system. There are a few others who want to join. If that number reaches seven by Friday 29th August, then I shall add an extra league in. To register interest, please email me, the email including your phpdiplomacy name.

Full details about the leagues are in the reply.

Game Details:

Game Number: 7

Game Type: Winner Takes All

Phase Length: 25 hours

Pot size: 175 (Bet of 25). If any player wishes to reduce the bet he should email myself and alert all other players in his Group of it in a Global tab, and it then may be reduced. If all players wish to increase the bet, they should agree to in the Global tab of a game, and then each should email me to confirm that they wish to do this. If a player wants a lower than 25 bet for the first game, they will have the opportunity to ask for this in the pre-season email.

Each player is responsible for ensuring he is able to play in the game at the scheduled time, in order to achieve this, he may ask for a reduced bet. If he is unable to pay any bet, then he shall forfeit the game, and the game shall be played with a Civil Disorder Italy. If two players are unable to play, then there shall also be a Civil Disorder Germany. In the event that three or more players are unable to provide any bet, the game is considered a draw between those able to play. The SC counts for each player for the game are 34/the number of players able to play.

Nations: If the Power Choice option is available by the time of the second game’s beginning, the nations for each game will be made so that no player plays the same nation twice. I shall instruct players on which nation to place as their top preference for this to happen smoothly.

Errors: If the game is begun with any error in the set-up, the game shall be called a draw and then restarted.

Start dates: Games will begin in the second week of September, and new games will be begun during: The fourth week of September, the second week of October, the fourth week of October, the second week of November, the fourth week of November and the second week of December. I shall provide reminders to every player of these dates. The second season will begin on the second month of February. There will be a summer break until September when the third season will begin.

Sitting:

Due to the long period of play in this league, we understand that people may need a sitter for their account. Because of this, we shall be providing the management of a sitting service for people’s accounts. In return for having their account sat should they be unable to be at a computer, players will agree to sit other peoples’ accounts in the leagues whenever they are able. We hope that players will be able to make sure that this system works, by agreeing to sit accounts willingly.

Points:

There will be 12 points awarded for a win, 6 points for a two-way draw, 4 for a three-way draw and 3 for a four-way draw. We doubt that there shall be five, six or seven way draws, however, should they occur, 2.4, 2 and 1.7 points will be awarded respectively.

In the event that two players have the same number of points, they will be differentiated between on the basis of a SC count across the games. The maximum SC count in any game is 18, even if more are held.

Leagues:

The winner of each league will enter the Premier league, along with the two highest scoring second placed players. The three remaining second placed players will enter league A with the four highest scoring third placed players. This will be reciprocated down the groups. Should there be a sixth league, then it will be re-jigged somewhat, but be in the same vein.

From the first “League Season” onwards there will be two up/two down between the leagues. If there become too many leagues to allow swift flow from lower to higher leagues, then a parallel league scheme may be introduced.

Groups: (These are the provisional groups for the first league season)

Group A:
Rait, Withnail, Sean, TheGhostmaker, belsherj, Delicious Wolf, Obiwanobiwan.

Group B:
MarekP, MadMarx, cgwhite32, krokodil, Ed Poon, arthurmklo, Dearmore

Group C:
Dangermouse, flashman, Chrispminis, thewonderllama, Goobledydook, Xapi, Pokemon trainer

Group D:
Anlari, Braveheart, Centurian, Sarge, El_Perro_Artero, Shisuren, jaco

Group E:
Alamothe, Ivan_Ivanov, Piazza, xgongiveit2ya55, Churchill, Destp, TheMastergamer

Howdy, I haven't been around the forum for a while, so I don't know how much discussion has occured around this, but I have a comment:
I think seven games a season is excessive, and it seems you selected this number to ensure 'fairness' by allowing each player to play as each power. It seems unnecessary to me that we must play as every country. Are you also going to calculate such that we begin as neighbors with each other player an equal number of times?, because who your neighbors are factors into difficulty just as much if not more than starting power, and to plan this seems extremely difficult without having a complex system structured ahead of time. By playing several (about four) games, that will randomize things enough, I think. Just because hockey season is eternal, doesn't mean that Diplomacy season should be; and without lucrative contract deals, even though we do play for love of the game, there will be lots of drop-outs from a group of 35 over the course of six months, which is the length we're looking at here.

Otherwise, I am tremendously excited! Thanks so much, Ghostmaker, for your incredible efforts in producing this elaborate league system. I look forward to the start with a anxious anticipation.

P.S. If you needed it, my e-mail is: [email protected]
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
24 Aug 08 UTC
I already have your email Sarge.

The reason the league was originally conceived was to get seven games with different powers in each, so that you can have a go with the same people again. If it were possible, we might have 7! games a season, so that every orientation possible was played. I very much wanted to hold true to that original intention.

Also, if we have only four games, it becomes very likely that two players fail to register a single point. Seven in that respect is a very good number to have.

Sean, we can see what happens in that respect, and perhaps make a shift at the time.

Churchill (2280 D)
24 Aug 08 UTC
Hmm... I'm not sure about power choice... I feel that the league should either be 7! games so that every orientation is played, or simply luck of the draw.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
25 Aug 08 UTC
I would like to join please.
Chrispminis (916 D)
25 Aug 08 UTC
I'm going to have to agree with Sarge on this one. I personally have no problems with playing seven games, but I'm sure that seven games is probably a bit much for many of the other players. It may be that many players will fail to register a single players but many tiebreakers can be used, eg. # of Supply Centers at end of game or year eliminated.

Also, for the sake of accessibility, I suggest a 5 point blanket bet for all games. The stakes of the leagues are really prestige and the opportunity to make a name for yourself and push into the elite that seems to have formed here. The points are beside the point. =D
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
25 Aug 08 UTC
Anyone is at total freedom to reduce the bet. The point behind 25 bet was to make it so that you could play the league without sacrificing any hope of making a difference to you dip-points.

I shall ask in the e-mail I send how many games people want to play, and follow the majoritory view.
Xapi (194 D)
25 Aug 08 UTC
I agree with Chrisp in everything he said.
Signalseven (116 D)
26 Aug 08 UTC
Chrispminis is very correct. It's all about the prestige. Even though prestige obviously isn't enough to get me into the league.

Maybe it's cause I'm more infamous than prestigious.

And I smell bad.

Ohh and I kick puppies when they are sick. Yeah that's it.

Note to self:
Don't kick puppies that are sick. It's very bad.

flashman (2274 D(G))
26 Aug 08 UTC
I'm up for seven games too... I have no problem with that. But we might need some rules on baby-sitting. Such as:

1) no-one can sit for more than one player in the same league, even if the sits are at different times; and

2) all players in my league must have a complete novice as a sitter, except me... : )

Do I get this right - for the duration of one league, you only play the players in your group, but you play them in multiple games, one game starting each 2 weeks commencing the 2nd week of September?

So, by 2nd week of December, if you haven't been defeated in any games you would be playing in 7 games? (unlikely though, as by then your first game would be in approx 1950).

That's cool. I'm in if you have any dropouts or have enought to start a new group. - you have my email already.

Government
So, in my tired ramblings I came up with the idea of a phpDip goverment that might be entrusted in regulating some of the inflation problems (it might even tie in with kestas's moderators).

Systems could include determination by vote, by rank, or better: both.

This would be very interesting, as Diplomacy is a political game in a nature, and I feel that many players would enjoy a longer-spanning side-game so to speak.

Convoy Rules - Kiel
Can an army in, say, Norway, on a fleet through the Nth Sea, on another fleet through the Heligoland Bight, on another fleet through the Baltic, and land in Berlin without stopping for a turn at Kiel.

In the rule book, the close up views of Kiel seem to indicate that the Heligoland Bight includes the Kiel canal and the little bit of water on the eastern side of Kiel. So, it seems to me that convoying through there should be possible, but I've not found an explanation that covers that.

What does everyone think?

Hi. I want to start a game with 30 minutes/ round. The idea is that the game will have 72h/round just to no post a turn in weekend. But, every player needs (during the week since 10:00 am until 05:00 pm) post his orders in 30 minutes / turn, On this way the game will have 30 minutes x turn but will not have end of turn on weekend or during the night. For this I am using the GM -3. Who wants???

I want to look at the code of the site, just to see how complex is it, and if I can help somehow.
Where should I look for it?
And the variations? Are all discussed here? Or there is some system for group development or something?

(It is likely this have been discussed before, but, why not to use some forum system as phpBB or similar? It is really messy to follow some conversations here... ;-).

Question re what a fleet can and cannot do
A fleet leaves harbour to venture into waters occupied by an opposing fleet, and she does this with no support. Normally the first fleet would be bounced back from whence she came.
But, what if simultaneously, the opposing fleet conveys an army into the harbour from whence the first fleet floated from. As the first fleet was unable to dislodge its enemy fleet, does the opposing army that was conveyed now occupy the first fleet's harbour? And if so, does that mean that the first fleet retreats to any unoccupied adjascent space contiguous to both (a) its harbour and (b) the water into which it first attempted to sail?
