..I lost
If I lost, and have less than 100 pts, do I get the points back? Because I lost in Wombat and Friends, and where are the 15 I bet?

Around Again
Now the Autumn holidays (woo, three cheer for basic education!) are over, I'm back, and in a few games.
Just wondering though: when i went i was on less points than when i returned. What happened?
PS: No, i didn't have any active games either. Has kestas given everyone 100pts?

Building new units
In "Unit placing" phase I am entitled to build 3 units, but I want to build only 2.
Can I achieve this? How?
My two hypothesis:
1. I leave 1 create field empty. I will be able to finalize the order?
2. I give a wrong build order (say a fleet in Munich). Other build orders will be executed correctly?

Someone knows the answer?

Possible error?
In the game "Bored..." Spring 1903, i was Austria, and i went to take Venice, but this showed up:
Spring 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Trieste attempted to move into Venice but there was a stalemate.
which means that the other who was going for it cant get there as well, but didnt know why, France got in, so how is it a Stalemate?

Progress Report - D minus
I have played so many games on a real board that I was intrigued by the idea of playing on-line.

So far though, in my first two attempts, I have:

a) mistaken an Autumn move for a Spring move, leaving a vital support out of my orders; and
b) set up a very good Autumn move and failed to wait to see if the hurriedly pressed Finalize button actually went through (it didn't), leaving me dead in the water...

I have learnt from this. However, my main point is that in the live game, it is the errors that make it so realistic, especially when players with largish forces are under great pressure of time to write orders. I suppose I should be pleased that I have a whole new load of player errors to contemplate with the on-line version.

I am hoping to improve my grade befoe the end of term.

New Forum??
I'm beginning to think we need a bigger and more organized forum to accommodate all the players now. There should be several different sections of the forum, each with a set topic for posts. Like Newbie Help, Bugs, Multi Accounting, Casual, etc.

Is your self esteem so low?
I feel sorry for people who needs to go for the trouble in creating 2 accounts so they can feel how a winner feels.

Do you really needs this? Is your life so low?

Is pathetic.

Is it possible to have a 3 way Draw?
The 3 remaining countries agreed to a 3 way tie.
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1789
Can this be done ?
csibadajoz (527 D)

Why this game ends without any notice to the players?

I mean, the conversations about tie is 'in' the game, I can speak about tie just to make easy to stab my 'friend'.

I think the adminsitrator must ask players about if it is true the tie, isn't it?
csibadajoz (527 D)
26 Oct 07 UTC
Perhaps I really want draw, but we need negociate the terms of the tie (i.e. how many SC for each player?)
dangermouse (5551 D)

Uh oh, did Kestas draw the game without getting the OK from all players?
S_MaRt (910 D)
26 Oct 07 UTC
Exactly, but from chat box all player agreed. So it does not matter really.
Actually dear csibadajoz, It is to your advantage since you had less SCs.
I got 10 points out of the total 40. How many have the other 2 players got?
csibadajoz (527 D)
26 Oct 07 UTC
I got 13, I think. Does anybody know how is the sharing of points?

The chat box is 'in' the game, the o.k. to draw a game must be 'out' of the game, I think. Speaking to players I can be agree only to speak and to attempt to distract other players.... the game is about that, and about stabs.... I can be agree with draw, but perhaps I want wait until winter, just to take some SC more....

I think Kestas should ask to all players personality to draw, or make a similar mechanism to do that.
S_MaRt (910 D)

What I dont understand is, according to player fwancophile, he got 13 points.
His plus mine add up to a total of 23.
What happened the remaining 17?
Have they went all to the 3rd players with less SCs ??
S_MaRt (910 D)

Sorry csibadajoz i did not see your reply.
fwancophile:13
csibadajoz:13
S_MaRt: 10
I'm sorry but this does not add up to the total 40.
Why would I get less ??

fwancophile (164 D)

i don't mean to be too flippant or anything but since this is a thread about a draw in a low stakes game, i just want to say that i am super pissed that in 13 of the 15 most recent games i have played, i have drawn austria & russia.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
26 Oct 07 UTC
If you say to another player you're happy with a draw I'll take that as meaning you're happy with a draw, until there's a mechanism for drawing without admin intervention.

On a draw the points are split equally among all surviving players. I figured that since it's an agreed draw that means players agree that there is no winner and no-one is ahead.
This is something I will probably change in the future, because it would probably be better to split it according to who has the most supply centers.

On getting Austria & Russia 13 out of 15 of the most recent games, that's bad luck, PHP's shuffle function should definitely be random enough to not cause you to get the same country more than you should. When so many people register for games every now and then people are bound to get weird patterns appear that don't seem to be due to chance
Personally I've had a pretty equal share of all the countries
fwancophile (164 D)
26 Oct 07 UTC
its okay, i mean, its not the end of the world. and i am sure that some would be very happy with russia or austria. just not me - but whatever, maybe i'll never draw them again down the line ;)
S_MaRt (910 D)
26 Oct 07 UTC
kestasjk, I agreed to the tie so I'm not complaining. The 3 way equal split is ok with me. I thought I had got 10 points when in fact, after a re-counting.. I really got 13.
13.33 points each... where's my 0.33 point ? just kidding :)

9 out of 10 face to face Diplomacy in a face to face game end in a draw. Also I have been getting the same country in streaks, like now my last 3 games are England. The same has happen with Austria, Russia and Turkey. Plus I have not gotten France to date(I did take France over once).
Wooble (450 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
I strongly disagree that the number of SCs controlled should affect the points in a draw. If the stronger countries feel that they don't really want to share equally in a draw, they should endeavor to win the game. The published rules are pretty clear that all survivors share equally in any draw, and that should extend to points as well.
dangermouse (5551 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
Agreed Wooble. If players all agree to a draw then the point distribution must be equal, regardless of SDs currently controlled.
csibadajoz (527 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
I am agree with almost all... except "If you say to another player you're happy with a draw". Maybe I am lieing (or bluffing), the game is about that, isn't it?

In other orden, I can tell to a player I am happy with a draw, but not in that moment given, or when player X were eliminated.... or when player X admit hi is a 'dizzy duck'....
thewonderllama (100 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
kestas, can we implement a 'i am a dizzy duck' button?
TeutonicPlague (250 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
I'd prefer a 'lloopy llama' button, personally.

csibadajoz: I can see lying about just about everything in the game, but about wether or not to end it? Are you thinking that you can trick them into thinking the game is over and steal all the SDs when their backs are turned? They will keep playing until the GameMaster tells them it's over. Lying about wanting a draw doesn't serve any useful purpose.
csibadajoz (527 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
TeutonicPlague: I don't think that exactily, but in the negociatons of some moves, this acctitude can have some influence. Of course you can lie about when the game will end, why not? Perhaps 'mislead' is a better word than 'lie'.
TeutonicPlague (250 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
No, I think 'lie' is pretty appropriate. Misleading would be to say "I think a draw could be a good idea." To say "I want a draw," when you don't, is a lie.

Perhaps an 'I'm tired of the game too" attitude can have an effect on your opponent. However, the way I see it, when you say you want a draw, you are no longer negotiating moves, you are negotiating the end of the game. Just because you're tired of the game doesn't mean you're going to stop making good moves.
abab (1312 D)

I just would like to agree with Wooble and Dangermouse about point sharing. I have drawn a game where I controlled 11 SCs and received same points as my allied country who had 3 SCs. After first negative impression, I realized that this was deeply right; if I complain with this sharing, I just have to take risk and go on playing, not agreeing on a draw. Draw is sort of giving up for countries that have a relatively large number of SCs. Equal sharing is a disincentive to doing that.
As for draw requests, it might work as follows: one of the surviving players posts a draw request on the forum and all the others explictly join in the thread and accept the draw.

hi! i think that on the other sites which support draws there are anonymous votes for it

Supporting a Convoy.
I tried to do this once with an ally, and it seemed to not work. So, I'm weary about doing it again. Let's say I convoy an army from London to Holland. I also have a Fleet in Helgoland Blight that I want to support the attack with. How exactly do I support the Convoy. The only option I see for support is "support north sea."

but in the fall, the fleet has not only moved to the english channel, but also convoyed an army to mainland england. how did that fleet move and convoy both in a single turn?!?

Player wont finish the game
Take a look at last few turns of this game:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1741

Italy had at least few chances to finish the game. It's getting annoying to continue this as I it is clear that gonzo who is playing as Italy has won.
This was supposted to be my last game but instead of having fair competition I was accused of multiacounting as stoni90 and now a player won't finish the game.
The only thing I can do is advice you not to invite gonzo in your games.

How many of you have been working on variant boards (for live gaming or computer-based)?
I have spent a bit of time reading/searching around recently - there is some interesting stuff out there. I have drawn up one board myself, but not tried to get people to play-test. I am reluctant to tinker with the rules.

Anyone got a recommendation?

I like to play lives games and organise these when I can. It would be nice to have an alternative board/rules to use in parallel with the original.

Newbie Questions
I played email dip games before so I am somewhat familiar with the format but every site is a little different.

My questions are. How do you enter the orders? What is the timetable for orders (how often)? Do you need to download and/or install anything to play here?

Thanks

So no one probably remembers me, but...
I'm back from my long sojourn. I apologise for going CD in all of my games a long time ago; I wasn't aware that I would have so many problems getting to a computer in Taiwan, so I wasn't able to save myself, and I haven't been back since as I was quite embarrassed.

So in summary, I'm sorry and Hello again!

What do you think of people becoming vassals?
Turkey is winning this game through the use of Germany as a vassal: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1722

Turkey tried to make me a vassal, and I "accepted" but tried to sabotage him instead. (He caught on and betrayed me back.)

I maintain that it's demeaning for anyone to actually serve as a vassal just to get some points, the metagaming equivalent of selling out for too little money. No one should accept a "vassal" offer from me, because I'll be lying. I like to go down fighting. How about you?
