staled games
I have a question on rules implemented in this version of Diplomacy to decide a game has ended up.
What if there are two blocks of opposing allied countries (not just two countries) that are so disposed on the map that one of them can stale any advancement of the other forever and for sure and hence no single country can get to 18 spots? Is the game declared over when no territory changes owner for a number of years?
Or can players do something to declare they had enough and they recognize the game is staled? What if one player (with some lack of fairplay...) decides he wants to go on? Does the game lasts for an arbitrarily large number of years?

More time between moves.
Is there anyway players setting up games can choose the time limit between moves. currently i think it's set at 24 hours but 48 or 72 would be nice. and if it can't be done now then maybe the script could be changed to allow it. i hate missing deadlines and screwing up my games cause i'm busy.

Stats
Does anyone keep statistics on which country wins, or frequencies of opening combinations and their likelihood of victory, etc.? As the sort of Diplomacy nerd who likes stats, I'd be interested to know.

Metagaming again, this time no excuse
In the newly forming game "Peteria I", gamers Peteria and petertclo is the same person, which he himself verified to me during messages in other games. He purposedly JOINED with both accounts so he can give away territories. This time he cannot argue that he is helping his friend out of some shit as he himself formed and joined the game. Does the admin has the authority to ban or to kick one out of the game. I understand that new gamers tends to want more chances to practice and 100 pts isnt enuf to join games, so many would have 2nd accounts, but i strongly insist that they should not join the same game to avoid unfairness.

bug?
I'm Italy in this game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1872, I tried to move from Venice to Piedmont, and Rome to Venice. But it said that the army moving from Rome to Venice is a stalemate, but the Army from Venice to Piedmont did succeed moving there, so I think there are definetly so problems in there.

Restricting CDing Players
I haven't been here long enough, but I can see that CD players are usually those who are unhappy with the way their game was going. Could there be a restriction at join time for players with a history of CDs? Or a way for them to resign so that there is not a constant 24 hour wait for time to expire? Also, could people be allowed to take over countries that have fallen below three units without penalty to their pot? That way they risk nothing for joining and helping out other games.

Code changes
Two small code changes: Draws have been made possible, but they do need to be done manually

Also corrupt orders should now be recognized and wiped automatically, without causing problems beyond displaying a message saying an order was corrupted and wiped.

Both of these code changes are small hacks, draws need to be implemented more coherently and without requiring someone to draw a game by hand, and orders shouldn't be corrupted in the first place, but hopefully they'll do as a stopgap solution until I can fix them properly

Brazilian Game
Hi people again,

I would like to create a game just for Brazilians (or anybody else wich speak portuguese...)
The url is:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1895

And the password is easy! It's the name of a typical dish of brazilian and portuguese cuisine. It's is a stew of beans with various beef and pork products.

I hope there is enough people to join this game!

See you soon...

Hi people!

Enjoy this new game!

It should be called "Bravery's game 2". I don't know why the name was not accepted...

May be a bug...
In this game http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1787 , I am Russia & I used Galicia to enter Rumania which was Austria's, supported by Ukraine, Sevastopol & Black Sea. Austria had Rumania, Bulgaria, Serbia & Budapest to hold & support hold. I used army in Constantinople to attack Bulgaria to break its support, so Austria should be left with 3 units to hold while I still have 4. Yet, it said "both units were equally matched so there was a stand off." In the sequence of moves reports, the Constantinople - Bulgaria move came after the Galicia - Rumania, is it possible that it's a computer calculation bug that the Southern moves come after the Northern moves & supports can't be broken?

Russia and Italy kinda look like the same player, the italian player was created after russia started slipping, took over italy in a CD state, and only seems to post moves when russia post moves, also after more than two weeks, this is the only game the italian player is participating in?? seems fishy.

rules again
i'm sorry, there are just some things on game mechanics i am not clear on and so i am junking up this forum with questions. unit b is supporting HOLD unit a. unit a is ordered to move, not to take a territory, but to cut support of an attacking unit, so unit a will remain where it started. will the support holds hold up the same as if unit a had just held, rather than moved?
Noirin (2827 D)
11 Oct 07 UTC
of course not; support holds can work only if the supported unit holds
danomalley (323 D)
11 Oct 07 UTC
I'm pretty sure you're wrong. I've been told previously that you can support hold any unit that doesn't end up moving (i.e. even if it was ordered to move and the move fails)
Noirin (2827 D)
11 Oct 07 UTC
Diplomacy rules, 4th edition (2000), page 7, "Supporting a unit" clearly states with an example that if the unit which you're support-holding tries to move the support is invalid.
dangermouse (5551 D)

You can support hold any unit that does not ATTEMPT to move. This means the receiving unit must be ordered to hold or to support a hold.
freakflag (690 D)

Or it can be ordered to support a move or convoy a unit. Anything except a move is acceptable.
danomalley (323 D)
11 Oct 07 UTC
That might be the official Diplomacy rule but are you 100% sure that's how phpdiplomacy implements it? I definitely remember being told before (can't remember if it was on the forum or not) that if a moving unit's move fails, it acts as if it has been ordered to hold.
If this is wrong I'd like to find out for sure as I often build my supports with this assumption in mind!
aoe3rules (949 D)
11 Oct 07 UTC
it's how phpDiplomacy implements it. if you're unsure, download the code and read it yourself.

besides, if you were told that inside a game they were trying to trick you. technically that's metagaming and therefore cheating, but you should know better than to listen to them. ask on the forum if you're not sure. i usually offer valid advice to new players, but some people just take advantage of them.
spinebag (337 D)

Is it really cheating to deliberately tell someone false rules? Lying to someone about the moves you will submit is certainly an acceptable part of the game. The difference here is that one can protect oneself against misinformation regarding the rules by reading the rules for oneself; short of telepathy, it's impossible to read an opponent's true intent. Telling someone fake rules, then, seems less egregious than telling someone fake moves - it is a lie that can easily be uncovered and brought to light. With that in mind, I would say that telling someone fake rules is a rookie move, and while not cheating, is not something one will ever see a competitive player do, as it is an ineffective strategy.
aoe3rules (949 D)
11 Oct 07 UTC
actually, it's cheating to tell someone false rules because the rules are related to things out of the game, so lying about them is metagaming, similar to "if you don't give me serbia i'll come over to your house and beat you up" because it involves something outside of the game.

I'm glad we've managed to divert this thread to metagaming.

danomally - phpDiplomacy definitely implements this piece correctly.

aoe3rules -

You wrote "the rules are related to things out of the game." This is false - the rules only exist within the game; they neither stem from nor impact anything outside the game itself.

There's nothing in the game that says you can't threaten a player with physical violence should he fail to cede you a territory. Fortunately (at least in the US), we have rules about such things occurring outside of a game of Diplomacy. Since the threat would impinge on the "real world" it would then be subject to the rules of the real world. The situation you postulated, for example, would be a violation of law that we term assault.

Within Diplomacy, all sorts of misdirection and lying are acceptable and encouraged. See: http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/calhamer/militaryintelligence.htm
for a perspective from Allan Calhamer, who invented Diplomacy.

you idiot, read the first sentence! "Any tactic based on DECEPTION is legitimate in Diplomacy."
aoe3rules (949 D)
12 Oct 07 UTC
well, he does say that it would be okay to lie about the rules, so while it's not officially cheating we still consider it cheap.

aoe3rules, i really look at diplomacy differently than you. how can that be cheating? you're lame

about support
when one wants to support an unit, does the supporter HAS to be adjacent to that particular unit and to the territory where the moving unit wants to move?

or just to the moving unit?

thanks
