Diplomacy Update?
When will the update occur which allows us to support convoyed armies. This is a critical aspect of the game and definately affects the way I play (In some cases it limits my success.) Let me know

What is up with people talking out of character in games?
What is up with people talking out of character in games? This is Diplomacy. Press is part of the game. No need for comments like "I'm not an idiot, I've won DipCons" and "please only send messages when you know what you are doing."

Press is a vital part of the game, to say that people shouldn't be communicating, in character, is laughable.

Where did Diplomacy get its name.
Why is Diplomacy called "Diplomacy" when the entire game is based around war. There is a board game, "Settlers of Catan" which focuses entirely on economics and bartering with resoures. That game has the same merit to be called Diplomacy as "Diplomacy" or "Axis and Allies."

I am curious of alternate (logical) names for this game.

Possible bug in "The Politics"
I am Russia in our game, The Politics, and I posted a move that did not occur correctly. I supported my fleet into Constantinople, and Austria moved his armies so there could only have been one support. At a minimum neither of us should have had any units there, or if he did not support the move into Con. then I would have taken it. Please advise?

Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your army at Ankara successfully supported the fleet at Black Sea move to Constantinople.
Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Black Sea moving into Constantinople recieved move support from the army at Ankara.
Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Black Sea attempted to attack the army at Constantinople, but failed.

Supporting convoy attacks?
Is it possible to support an army that attacks via a convoy? If so, how is this done? In a recent game (The LO), France supported a convoyed army to Holland, but failed with the following message:

Autumn 1902, Diplomacy: Your army at Belgium's move support wasn't accepted by the unit which support was being given to.

Is there something special that needs to be done for this to work??? I would rather not try again until I am sure it is possible to do this...

Multiple Accounts?
I dont think this is such a big problem yet but in order to prevent further abuse what is being done about people making multiple accounts and making them all join one game. Since a person might control 2 characters in one game he already has a perma. alliance with themselves and can crush countries near him. Is there a 1 account per ip being enforced or anything?

I find that all of you opposing my decision to join so many games are right and I regret to say that not in one of them, i have made good progress, and I would like to apologize to all who called me a statpadder, for I am, for now a Mastermind. I would like to also apologize to my allies in my current games, for I will be leaving them for now.

I will be finishing my diplomar thesis and enjoying extended holidays this spring/summer, so I won't join any new games anymore.

Thanks for this great game and thanks for all of you having been great opponents.

Maybe I will take over 1 or 2 civil disordered countries, otherwise see you in autumn.

Good luck to all of you

Civil Disorder
From what I understand, the scoring system will work off the games you've finished (and possibly what you're still in). However, since players take over games in CD, it will not say how many times you went CD. This could simply be counted with a figure, but if so, I was just wondering what people thought about running the score in a field, so it can count this. This would catch people who go CD to get out of problems. However, this would need to be carefully done, because I was doing rather well in a few games, like below, where I had 14 SC's or something around that, then fell into CD.
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=560
Also, a slight note on the anti-multi front: there should be a section checking for players who take over CDs. Otherwise, people could you "substitute" a second account in for their good one, keeping stats high.

Confused?
How do you attack with multiple 'armies'. Ive tried the support movement but it doesnt seem to be working. Its the third drop down menu that confuses me. If say i click an army to support move to london and another is set to move to london, should that not work?

Fast game for obsessives
"It's the waiting I can't stand!"

There must be other players, like myself, who spend most of their lives within easy reach of a computer, and consequently find themselves checking the site for updates several times a day, bemoaning those little red crosses that hold everyone up.

Please, make yourself known to me in this thread, when I get 7 names I'll set up a fast game just for us. Hopefully I can find other like-minded people determined that a turn should last no longer than 8 hours maximum (given that we all have to sleep!) and assuming we're not in opposing time zones, most turns being dealt with in less than 2 hours. Including thinking time!

The kill joy here!
Two reasons for not supporting this idea: first, I'm GMT, so in fact I welcome this deadline length. Second, sometimes 24 hours is not too long (especially in Spring 1901) for effective diplomacy.
This is just an opinion...
Noodlebug (1812 D)
13 Apr 07 UTC
I know many people think you cannot play Diplomacy the way it is meant to be played with a fast turnaround. That is fair enough, I'm looking for the other people, the ones who don't care!

And I'm in GMT (well, BST right now) too... but I'm a bit of a night owl.

Writhdar... you're right, it's shocking. I'm gonna have to kick some arse!

OK anyone not invited to the first game (or even those who were), I've set up a new game "The Faster Game."

The password is eatmyfleet (or EatmyFleet, i've forgotton!)

Because this game is faster, you don't need an invite you just need to get in fast. But you still need to be committed to fast turnarounds.

day1dreamer and kestas aren't nearly as fast as they made out, The Fast Game has been open 16 hours and they haven't joined!

I think they have forfeited their place now. Anyone who thinks they will be faster (for every turn, not just for joining up) is now invited!
caldernet (100 D)
13 Apr 07 UTC
I'm willing to live with a slower Saturday and Sunday in exchange for 7 players. (Actually, I would be surprised if 7 initially motivated players would keep up a 6-12 hour timetable for more than a few seasons.)

I played diplomacy by mail years ago (I think my favorite zine was named "Cheesecake" run out of Chicago) and waiting 24 hours for a turn still seems lightening fast.
Noodlebug (1812 D)
14 Apr 07 UTC
Anyone who wants to make up the civil disorder numbers in "The Fast Game" the password is nosleep.

Isn't it ironic that I deliberately set out to seek people who will respond quickly and get things moving fast, and the game only starts 24 hours later with 2 empty seats???

I guess most people agree Diplomacy is a game to take your time over, rather than to dash through like a maniac. But come on, it's only 1 game!

Coemgenus (109 D)
14 Apr 07 UTC
At DipPouch I've seen delay even used as a tactic. It's inconsiderate, and just shouldn't be allowed. One late and you are in civil disorder. Why sign-up if you can't play dependably?
Noodlebug (1812 D)
16 Apr 07 UTC
Just as a side note, one thing this thread has proved is that it is possible to post passwords for private games in the forum for the benefit of invited individuals without being overwhelmed by uninvited opportunists!

I still think that private games should cease to be private once any player descends into true civil disorder, to minimise "fake game" abuse and long listings in "Joinable Games" of games that no-one can actually join.
Noodlebug (1812 D)
19 Apr 07 UTC
It seems day1dreamer lied to us about being a fast player, he hasn't put any orders in all week. He will not be invited to future fast games.

If anyone GENUINELY fast wants to take over Italy in "The Faster Game", please do so ASAP! (they still have 3 units and the game isn't too far advanced). If you have been following this thread you know the password.
Bris (100 D)
20 Apr 07 UTC
i'd be in for future fast paced games, usually i check the sire every hour or so since i am on the computer anyway, but there are times, (like sleeping) where it'll go 8-10 hours with out checking. totally in for the next one though
