what would happen?
if two of my own units attack another one of my own units (unit C), normally, this would be impossible. But what would happen if two enemy units attack that same unit C? Would unit C be forced to retreat of disband and would there be a stand off? Or would no unit move at all? Or perhaps unit C would be disbanded and the enemy would just control the territory that used to be controlled by unit C?

Adjudicator Error: Switching territories via a convoy
Found a new bug I think. I am trying to move one army directly from A to B. At the same time, I am convoying an army from B through C to A. This set of moves should work unless interupted by an attack. Unfortunately everything bounced and gamemaster claimed the two units tried to engage headon.

Impossible stalemate
In the game 'Diplo :)' I was attcking Portugal from MAO & supported it with army from Spain. There was no way Spain could have been supported & also support couldn't have been cut (as attacking force was MAO & there were no other enemy units around Spain except Portugal itself, which was attacked, so it couldn't cut support).

The log stated that:

08:40 AM Autumn 1913, Diplomacy: Your army at Spain successfully supported the fleet at Mid-Atlantic Ocean move to Portugal.
08:40 AM Autumn 1913, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Mid-Atlantic Ocean moving into Portugal recieved move support from the army at Spain.
08:40 AM Autumn 1913, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Mid-Atlantic Ocean engaged the fleet at Portugal head on; both units were equally matched so there was a stand off.

The last message doesn't make any sence... can anyone help?

where did autumn go?
Last night I spent more than an hour trying to give my orders in time. The game went so slow that it took me that long and I only made it just in time (like a minute or so). Anyway, last night was Spring. Today I log in and expect it to be autumn, but it is Spring the next year... This is what my GameMaster chat said:

08:39 AM Spring 1911, Diplomacy: Your army at Vienna was attacked by the army at Galicia, but sucessfully defended.
11:15 AM Autumn 1911, Diplomacy: Nothing happened involving your units in this phase.

What happened to Autumn?! Why did it take Spring 1911 that long to complete (because last night it allready said "due now") and why did Autumn end after only 1 hour and a half?

Support Move Error
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=367&orders=on#orders
I've nearly one this game, though I should have one it last turn. I was and still am at 17 units because one of my support move commands worked, and I got Berlin out of that. Otherwise, I attempted to hit Edinburgh with support move but it didn't work, I also sought after to stop Austria from taking my Constantinople with support from the Aegean and Bulgaria though that didn't work either.

Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your army at Silesia moving into Berlin recieved move support from the army at Prussia.
02:46 PM Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Yorkshire attempted to move into Edinburgh but there was a stalemate.
02:46 PM Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Clyde attempted to move into Edinburgh but there was a stalemate.
02:46 PM Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Aegean Sea attempted to move into Constantinople but there was a stalemate.
02:46 PM Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your army at Bulgaria attempted to move into Constantinople but there was a stalemate.
02:46 PM Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your army at Silesia sucessfully defeated the fleet and moved into Berlin.
02:46 PM Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Ankara was attacked by the army at Armenia, but sucessfully defended.

Warning to Russian players building in STP
Going through my games I just experienced that my build in STP which was ordered & finalized before the 'STP coast bug' fix, was changed to something which was 'You don't want to make any builds this turn' or smth..

So apparently the change in the program didn't know which coast I intend to place my fleet & changed it to 'no build at all'. So You should look through Your games where You ordered fleets in STP within last 24 hours!

Equally Supported Moves Should Bounce
In one of my games, I ordered A Bul-Gre and A Ser S A Bul-Gre. Somehow, though, the Turkish army in Greece ended up in Bulgaria, with my army destroyed. And it could have only had one support for its move-Constantinaple. So why didn't those moves bounce?

Hold support
In the game "Last stand" I got these messages last turn:

12:56 AM Autumn 1911, Diplomacy: Your army at Warsaw couldn't support a stand by the army at Galicia, because the army at Galicia tried to move
12:56 AM Autumn 1911, Diplomacy: Your army at Galicia recieved stand support from the army at Warsaw, but couldn't accept it because your army at Warsaw tried to move

=> Since when did it change? and why did it change? I used to be able to order unit A to give hold support to unit B which had been ordered to move, so that unit B would have been succesfully supported in case of an attack by my enemies... In this specific case, there used to be no problem with my hold support from Warsaw to Galicia even though I ordered Galicia to move.

Strategies as Austria
To me, Austria seems impossible to play as... has anyone ever won as Austria here?
Worldbeing (1063 D)
08 Mar 07 UTC
Game2006 I won after taking over Austria with a good headstart...
But in all the games I've come close to winning, or at least been on the winning side, as Austria, I've relied on having an alliance with at least two of the powers around me.
Also, Austria doesn't need many Fleets in the midgame, or so I've found.
Locke (1846 D)

The way i see it every country has a counterbalance, with the corner countries it's easy to see why, a strong England often means a strong Turkey (because of a weak russia) for example.
With Austria a strong and supportive Germany is useful and then either an alliance with Italy/Russia vs Turkey or Tukey/Austria vs Russia, the Triple alliance between Italy/Austria/Germany can also result in a strong Austria.
Finally what's worth bearing in mind is that if Austria can survive the first years basically intact then it has a good chance of becoming strong

I always make sure to be allied with italy when i'm austria, it's just too hard to defend against all fronts right from the start.
also germany, as mentioned by locke, is a good ally for austria.

however, i've never done that well with austria, so maybe something else would be better.

Being Austria I found out how diplomatic missions really work. Instigate Turkey against Russia and viceversa, ally with Italy against Turkey, make an non-aggression pact with Germany. If You got all those started and going only England or France can stop You from winning.
JonnyB.Cool (100 D)

you are definetly right: the first phase for austria is much more diplomatical than strategical difficult. if austria survives 2 years (and is in possesion of its own centers) it gets really powerful.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Austria really does require a lot of diplomacy, and sadly despite it being the name of the game, that is often lacking on this site's games!
Mandrossian (133 D)

Austria certainly benifits the most in games with only 5 players.

Opripom that all sounds very good in theory but its alot more difficult in practise!
Noodlebug (1812 D)

I've found Germany the most difficult so far... England, France, Russia, Austria and even Italy are all sniffing round your target territories and home territory right from the start. You need at least 2 alliances to have half a chance of survival.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I like Germany, because its easy to get going with.
Noodlebug, that is true, but actually one of them can be an NAP
Locke (1846 D)

i've done some more thinking and have some other things to add.Austria needs Galicia to remain unoccupied in 1901 as there is NO reason why the loss of it would benifit Austria, (barring an Exceptionally trusting alliance with Russia) and hopefully either Rumania or Serbia should definetely be captured (however Rumania is strongly anti-russian). Appeal to Italy's sense of decency, i see Italys job as maintaining the balance of power so say to him 'look do you want Russia and/or Turkey to walk away with this game' if he consents to help you have a good chance of surviving and possibly going on to win
Chrispminis (916 D)

Hm, Austria is fun to play because it's in a central position and often a big challenge. In the majority of games Austria gets eliminated within 2 years, and I think I've only played one game with Austria, and I won it. If there was still the View History button I could recall what I did... but here are some general tips.

Diplomacy is perhaps most critical for Austria seeing as it will border and compete with 4 other countries within the first year (only Germany has the same situation, but more guaranteed SC's).

Of course, the first thing to point out is that an Austro-Turkish alliance is near impossible. Taking into account that both players are not entirely altruistic and that they plan on winning and not lying over on their side for their ally to rampage around, Turkey and Austria cannot co-operate in the long term. IF they do, Austria will obviously come out ahead, since they have more room to expand, Turkey will find themselves stagnating, and will notice soon that they HAVE to attack Austria in order to have any reasonable hope of winning, short of running up into Russia, around into Germany, and France, all the while Austria sits idle? (Nah).

So what about Russia? Russia and Austria CAN co-operate, especially against Turkey at the beginning, since it's in Austria's best interests to get Turkey off the board, and in Russia's best interests to remove Turkey early if he wants to pursue a northern campaign. Of course the most dangerous position for Austria is a Russo-Turkish alliance, and although unlikely, this should be Austria's #1 priority. Because if they have an alliance, Austria is as doomed as a vegetarian jaguar. Galicia is the key territory for this relationship, and an organized bounce or some sort of demilitarization may be necessary around this area to assure trust. Also, negotiation of the division of the Slavic countries and Turkey is not easy, and should be worked out for a practical alliance.

Now, Germany. Germany perhaps is Austria's most natural friend. They have some fairly annoying null territories between them that make war between them in the early game quite unfruitful and more likely to benefit the other countries. Above all, Germany and Austria cannot afford to stagnate or they will find themselves surrounded and overwhelmed. Together, Germany and Austria have a lot of purchasing power, and a lot of strategies to insure a peaceful Italy involve Germany telling Italy to back off, or they will enforce rule from Tyrolia. Of course, the obvious target of this alliance is Russia, and Galician control is crucial, as well as making sure Germany isn't being harassed from the west too much, and Austria from Turkey in the south.

Finally, Italy. In so many games I see here, it seems that Italy and Austria immediately duke it out. This is most likely because it's such a tempting proposition, especially for Italy. An Italian stab against an unsuspecting Austria is by far the Fastest way for an Italian player to expand in the early game. On the other hand, a competent and prepared Austrian player will almost always win against Italy in the end. If you are playing Austria, point this out to Italy, and if you still don't trust him, leave an army back to discourage a quickie in Autumn. Venice-Trieste and the Adriatic Sea are obviously the key points of the conflict and they have the only two adjacent home SC's which make for some interesting diplomacy, and continual paranoia. Besides these problems, if you make sure Italy knows that you are prepared to crush them, perhaps with German help, they will usually listen if they are reasonable (or have a SURE alliance with Russia and/or Turkey, in which case be afraid). One of the most classic strategies is the Lepanto, which usually involves a very lucrative alliance between these two countries, and an early defeat of Turkey. I'll go into more detail in my next post.

So there you go, those are some general strategies. Remember to be diplomatically active, people tend to ally more with those who communicate well. Also, since you are in the centre, you can't stop expanding. If you start to stagnate, you will find your hands full with a growing France/England and a rampaging Turkey/Russia. Stuck between two superpowers is a horrible place to be. You want to dominate by mid-game, and be in the position where attacking you will be so unattractive that people will go out of their way to keep the peace.

I hope this helps with Austria. Remember to think like other players, and think about what THEY want. Everyone's playing to win, and since allied victories are not enabled, assume that no alliance will carry through to the very end. Cheers!

-The Lepanto-

Ah, this is one of the most popular openings, named after the Battle of Lepanto where Spanish and Italian forces wrecked a Turkish fleet. The general idea of the strategy is for Italy to cripple Turkey by using some underhandedness, Mediterranean domination, and usually help from Austria.

The Typical Lepanto
Spring 1901
Italy :
F-Nap move ION (prepare to convoy to Tunis)
A-Rom move Apu (prepare to be convoyed)
A-Ven hold (optional, for neutrality and security)

Austria :
F-Trieste move Alb
A-Bud move Ser
A-Vie move Gal? (optional, the other two moves are obviously anti Turkey so you could commit and go to Budapest, or into Trieste for security/ambiguity, or even Tyrolia. Galicia is a good general move since a Russian army in Galicia is BAD BAD for Austria.)

Autumn 1901
Italy:
F-ION-convoy A-Apu to Tun
A-Apu move to convoy F-ION
A-Ven hold (optional again, depends on what you did before, and what the situation is at this point, you should appear neutral thus far so as not to send up flags in Turkey)

Austria:
F-Alb move Gre
A-Ser support F-Alb move Gre
A-Gal (do whatever seems best)

End of 1901 : Ah, so by this point, Austria should have 2 new builds, and Italy with 1. Italy should build a new fleet at Naples, since we want control of the Mediterranean, and Austria should just build two new armies wherever necessary. Leave the fleet work to Italy. So when 1902 comes aroung, together Austria and Italy have 3 fleets and effective control of the Mediterranean.

Spring 1902:
Italy:
F-ION move EAS (this is the surprise :D)
F-Nap move ION (see where this is going yet?)
A-Tun- hold (keep him here!)
A-Ven (whatever is appropriate, by the end of this season everyone will know what you are up to, neutrality is null now)

Austria:
F-Gre move AEG (this is not necessarily to take it, a bounce there is all that you need.
The rest of the armies, do what's necessary to keep safe.

Autumn 1902:
Italy:
A-Tun move to convoy F-ION (Here comes the Lepanto!)
F-ION convoy A-Tun to convoy F-EAS (convoy chain guys)
F-EAS convoy A-Tun to Syria (get right back in there, next year we'll dish out the damage, if there's no risk, go for Smyrna, but Syria is a safer bet, we wouldn't want this elaborate convoy to fail...)

End of 1902: Hooray! Turkey is doomed if this has all gone through. Smyrna will be in Italian hands the following year, and Bulgaria will belong to Austria. Let the division of Turkey begin. :D

Problems: Of course this opening is not foolproof. For one, Austria and Italy must NOT attack each other. Also, if Turkey is prepared, he can easily stop the Lepanto. How? By occupying the Aegean Sea, he can attack either of the fleets and interrupt the convoy. If this is the case I recommend abandoning the original convoy, and possible taking the Aegean with your Eastern Mediterranean fleet as an alternative. But the best cure is prevention, you must convince Russia to apply pressure on the Black Sea, or have them arrange a bounce there. Whatever you can do to force Turkey to move to the Black Sea, that way, he can only helplessly watch. This isn't hard to do since the Black Sea is often the focal point of Russo-Turkish conflict anyways.

Of course there are some variations such as the Key Lepanto, but I won't go into that right now. I hope this helps and I hope the notation wasn't too confusing. Cheers!
