For logistics and to validate which countries are which players, I am going to have public press turned on. Everyone will then people able to publish what their zip code is so that we know who is who. You will email me (or PM me) your mailing address and I will send the list to everyone this way your mailing address doesn't have to appear on the internet.

Posting any game related messages in the public press would be considered cheating, and it will only be used for the logistics of verifying who is who and fixing any address issues. I will be the only one who knows user's usernames or email addresses, and no one will communicate game messages in anything but mailed letters/postcards.

Forgeries and anonymous letters and mailing copies of letters and other tricks are allowed.

Sharing your username or email address with other players would not be allowed as well, as it creates an easy and tempting way to circumvent postal mail, and also limits the chance that you will know you are chatting with another player in other forums and such.

Pretty cool idea. Like classic days of colonial diplomacy when communications were by mail. Too bad I'm awful with mail or I'd give it a try.

Rob, in the good old days before this internet thingy, a group of Diplomacy players i know did this very thing, a postal game. Based on that experience, where that game moderator only had to hint that forged letters with false orders were allowable with the comment that there was no rule against them, which quickly led to the game moderator being inundated with seven sets if orders for each country, one genuine and six forgeries for every move.
May I wish whoever will be your game moderator much luck if you are going to allow forgeries and tricks, because that poor soul is going to need it.

Have the mod give each player a secret passcode to be placed on any set of orders. Forgery problem solved. Unless some foolish player wants to give his code to another player.

I would be interested in playing but I'm currently pretty busy in life. If you still need players and my schedule clears up I'd be happy to play.

Would the game moderator enter the orders, or would we enter them online? I kind of thought we were entering them, but all press was by snail mail, hence no worries over what MM is talking about.

Yeah, webdiplomacy will handle orders and letters will be for communication. The only moderating I'm doing is making sure everyone gets valid mailing addresses for the countries

Were old postal games played with phases as short as ten days? I imagine we will only get to send one message per turn without any guarantee of getting any response back in time.
This will be quite different.

"No, how about I support hold you this turn and we try next turn?"

I think that raises a good point. We could probably pause the game if we had to.

Of course, maybe crafting a letter that communicates everything that needs to be said, as well as setting your orders based upon how you hope the others will respond is part and parcel of this whole experience. It will definitely be different.

The moderators can set arbitrary phase lengths via the mod tools.
