Anonymous players games vs not
I'm playing in a game where there has been a discussion in global surrounding the issue of players having played in the same games before. Without mentioning player names and game ID am I safe to start a discussion about this issue here in the forum or should I wait until the game in question is over?

Have some time to kill. Ask yes/no questions to guess who I am. If you guess right you go next. If you guess wrong you're out for the rest of the round.

Finding a specific gaming laptop in the Netherlands(/Europe)
Hey guys, I'm looking for a gaming laptop (with some help I came to the conclusion that the ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 might be the best option, although I'm also still considering the cheaper ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71). However, I can't really find it in Europe, or elsewhere without paying over $350 in shipping costs. So now I'm wondering if I missed something and/or there are alternative laptops that will work just as well and don't need to be shipped in for a shitload of money.

Emulator
Do you know a good emulator for Diplomacy. I am not talking about a game you play offline with your friends in your living room but more like a game where you can set all the armies and fleets on the map then you start a game. I'm doing some "what will you do in that situation?" questions for my brother.

new person question again
Ok. Retreat is done and it says it is order phase but I don't have any place where my units are available for orders. Is there a secret button somewhere I have to press or should I keep checking back and hope they appear at some point?

morally iffy strategy
Look inside. Or not. I don't care.

This site tries to establish multiple kinds of Diplomacy systems, and they all revolve around a board game experience. If you play the game F2F, then you don't necessarily have to have phase lengths, but online it is necessary.

Is waiting until the last second to submit orders a legitimate strategy, or is trying to trick people into thinking you're about to NMR, thus influencing their moves, frowned upon on this site? Should you try to plan around people NMRing, or always assume that they'll make phase?

I've seen multiple examples of this, and I'm wondering what some of my fellow forum-goers think of it.

"Morally iffy" would be more along the lines of "having a Sudanese orphan turn in your orders before you give him lunch." What you're describing is gamesmanship.

Sounds legit to me.
JamesYanik (548 D)

But for a real board-game-esque experience, this situation would never arise. It is a manipulation of the site compensating for lack of easier interaction.

This situation arises in F2F all the time. I've seen people scramble to get orders in and others change theirs at the last second because they know the first person will mess up
Randomizer (722 D)

I've played F2F where players keep negotiating to the last second to get a favorable alliance. Online it is harder to do that type of negotiating so different tactics evolve to compensate.

I do hate players that wait until the last minute to enter their moves especially if they are the only moves not marked ready. Delaying should only be for players that can only access the game at one time.

It's called asynchronous communication. Get used to it.
jbalcorn (429 D)
05 May 15 UTC
I'd call it obnoxious but I've seen it. The only way to stop it is to create a game where the players agree to not use it as a strategy.
jbalcorn (429 D)

@Randomizer not marking ready is different than appearing to NMR. Howver, one way you can combat it is to keep an eye on last logged in time - if someone is logging in and not saving moves, they're probably playing the fake NMR game.

Now, if you want until the last minute to turn in orders in a live gunboat, you're going to make some enemies.
Sherincall (338 D)

I've done the almost-NMR once. France was predicting my moves perfectly for 3 turns, even though I tried to not be obvious.. Then I noticed he hasn't entered orders, so I waited. 5 minutes before the deadline, he entered. I entered three minutes after that.

Predictably, he tried to grab as many centers as possible (was a fall turn). The following slaughter was glorious! :D

The almost-NMR works best when you play it right after a legit NMR, and particularly so if you don't check back in to the game until then.
yebellz (729 D(G))

@James, an analogous situation can in fact arise in FtF, as abgemacht pointed out.

Either way, FtF or online, I think this strategy is well within the rules. I don't think it's "morally" iffy, but it might be questionable from a strategic standpoint. I think it's folly to count on another player NMRing or misordering. It's also quite risky to try this type of gambit since you do risk actually NMRing if you try to cut things very close to the deadline.

I can personally vouche for the fact that James has never played F2F. Give him a year, he'll understand why I'm laughing at OP.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
06 May 15 UTC
There have been plenty of FtF players that have scrambled at the last minute to write orders knowing they have some currently in the box to get others to believe they're working with them.
