On Time
Two interesting articles that I thought could serve as a starting point for a discussion on time. How does time as we perceive it differ from time as a property of the universe? What meaning can humans extract from a clock that is so accurate it keeps different time on the floor or on a table?

http://spectrum.ieee.org/aerospace/satellites/introducing-the-worlds-most-precise-clock
http://www.npr.org/2014/11/03/361069820/new-clock-may-end-time-as-we-know-it

So, time as we perceived it on a personal level is highly subjective, slow class, fun games, etc, as examples of how time can "fly" or "don't move." As a property of the universe, that gets more interesting right because of how it changes with respect to the relativistic speed of the object to some initial frame. All in all, I don't think an NPR article on time is all that interesting.
Now if someone wants to talk about time behaves near a black hole or how things break down at a singularity point, that would be fun.

The NPR article isn't about time, per se, but about a new class of clocks that can measure time much more accurately. It's basically a lighter version of the Spectrum article for those who aren't interested in all the details.

Pretty cool article, abge. In effect, they've built an exquisite gravitometer (?) using time dilation.

zultar: but you probably are familiar with the behavior of time near a black hole, yes?

Well, now it would be interesting if time or space was quantized. It would have a lot of interesting properties and repercussions and it would make a "precise" clock a lot more interesting to me since there would probably a race to the "best" clock.

Many people believe space(time) is quantized, of course, but since attempts to actually quantize it lead to non-renormalizeable physical theories, I suppose it's hard to be certain till we have a real theory.

@semck

Yes, I suspect these clocks will mostly be used as gravitometers and as references for specific experiments. I don't think they'll be used (any time soon) as replacements for atomic clocks for GPS, etc.

@zul

Regardless of whether or not time is quantized, surely the "best" clock would measure time with the precision of planck time?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
14 Nov 14 UTC
I thought there were some physical limitations and we can't get to planck time or something. In any event, I think this topic is rather timely, abge. :)

It's very possible some other limit will prevent us from ever reaching planck time, but until that is found we do have a lower limit. People are still motivated to make better clocks. I guess I don't see why the discovery of quantized time would be further motivation to make better clocks.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
Next question!
Should I get this one? 25% off, now €37,49.
I heard it's good, but is it good enough for that price for a casual gamer like me, who will perhaps not be able to give it the time to enjoy 'all of it'?

Guys, Yellowjacket and Thucy started this violence and "kill him" thing in the Bible thread, aimed at me, and were silenced for it. Since then Thucy actually opened a thread with the same wording (or almost) and now chaqa has jumped on the meme.

Threads are now being locked, without breaking any rules whatsoever, because "they serve no purpose." (Coincidentally, said threads had a high concentration of posts critical of the mods, and of particular mods almost universally held to be hugely overreactive, in particular).

I got this juicer and made kale juice with it. It's rather harsh. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for vegetables to make juice out of. I have some bok choy but I doubt that will be delicious in juice form.

Looking for a replacement Russia
Hello everyone, we're looking for a player who is willing to take over Russia in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=149778
The game in question contains two players who know each other and failed to advertise that fact before the game, but who don't know who each other are in game.

Gunboat Game
I want a new game, but I can't handle a press game right now. Looking for 6 decent, reliable, gunboat players. I have a fair number of points, a lot of GR, and I'm terrible at GB, so consider it a donation.

The game will be WTA, 24 hrs, bet doesn't matter to me.

Can the smarties in the forum explain to me how it's possible that a rock emits noise? I known enough from my one visit to the space station that this sound cannot be from wind.

Speed of electrons: calculated/theorised based on what observations?
I understand that you can calculate the speed of an electron if you know it's time and place at various times, but I can't imagine how one would observe these things in the first place. Presumably one observes something else and uses calculations based on a theory combined with these observations, but I'd like to know what those actual observations are.

Looking for a classic WTA game!
Most of the ones I see listed are password-protected. If anyone has an open spot in one of those games, please shoot me a PM with details.

I haven't played for quite some time, but I can make a new game if there are others interested.
