2014 Webdiplomacy Tournament Replacement Player Needed
Board 4 is absent one player for the tournament. I am looking for someone interested in joining the tournament. Priority is given to players that can pay the $10 buy-in with emphasis on reliable players. If none are forthcoming, I would accept any reliable player. DO NOT POST HERE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. Message me privately since this is anonymous and you will be revealed after this board has completed.

Fleet Moscow
Why can I not build a fleet in Moscow? It borders the Caspian and could be used in an attack against Turkey. I realise that there is a rule saying that units can't moved to unnamed spaces on the board, like Ireland, but why not move down the coast to Sevastopol and then to Armenia? This wouldn't be a useful move, but should it be allowed according to the rules?

2014 Webdiplomacy Tournament Scoring Recap
A player messaged me asking to go through scoring, so I've taken the time to do that below.

Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
12 Nov 14 UTC
Assuming all 3 games ended today (which they won't), here's the way things would look:

Austria: Board 1 (0 SC's), Board 2 (15 SC's) Board 3 (8 SC's)
England: Board 1 (7 SC's) Board 2 (5 SC's) Board 3 (7 SC's)
France: Board 1 (2 SC's) Board 2 (6 SC's) Board 3 (6 SC's)
Germany: Board 1 (10 SC's) Board 2 (5 SC's) Board 3 (4 SC's)
Italy: Board 1 (4 SC's) Board 2 (1 SC) Board 3 (1 SC)
Russia: Board 1 (0 SC's) Board 2 (2 SC's) Board 3 (0 SC's)
Turkey: Board 1 (11 SC's) Board 2 (0 SC's) Board 3 (8 SC's)

Here's how scoring works: I add the total of SC's controlled by each country across all 3 boards and divide by 3 (finding the average of the total boards). I then round to the nearest integer value (decimals of 0.5+ round up to the next integer and 0.49- round down to the nearest integer)

Here are the averages by country:
Austria: 8
England: 6
France: 5
Germany: 6
Italy: 2
Russia: 1
Turkey: 6

After obtaining the averages I do the following:
(YOUR CENTERS FOR YOUR COUNTRY) minus (AVERAGE FOR YOUR COUNTRY)

So Austria would look like:
Board 1 Austria: 0-8 = -8 D
Board 2 Austria: 15-8 = +7 D
Board 3 Austria: 8-8 = +0 D

Board 1 England: 7-6 = +1 Point
Board 2 England: 5-6 = -1 Point
Board 3 England: 7-6 = +1 Point

Board 1 France: 2-5 = -3 D
Board 2 France: 6-5 = +1 Point
Board 3 France: 6-5 = +1 Point

Board 1 Germany: 10-6 = +4 D
Board 2 Germany: 5-6 = -1 Point
Board 3 Germany: 4-6 = -2 D

Board 1 Italy: 4-2 = +2 D
Board 2 Italy: 1-2 = -1 Point
Board 3 Italy: 1-2 = -1 Point

Board 1 Russia: 0-1 = -1 Point
Board 2 Russia: 2-1 = +1 Point
Board 3 Russia: 0-1 = -1 Point

Board 1 Turkey: 11-6 = +5 D
Board 2 Turkey: 0-6 = -6 D
Board 3 Turkey: 8-6 = +2 D

I will then take each player's current score (starting at 50 D) and add or subtract the points received from these standings (NOTE THESE ARE NOT THE ENDING VALUES, JUST AN EXAMPLE. POINTS WON'T BE AWARDED UNTIL ALL GAMES FOR A PARTICULAR ROUND HAVE COMPLETED).

This system is aimed at looking at players who do well with a country when others tend to do more poorly. It is designed to remove the bias that sometimes happens when someone gets lucky and draws countries that people tend to play well and not penalize someone for getting a country that people tend to struggle with.

Therefore, since Russian players will typically see no change in score, they're not penalized for under-performance since other players playing Russia had the same outcome. Likewise, they are not benefited for not doing well. Each player is graded on a combination of how well they play on their board compared to others playing the same country on other boards.

After round 2, I will have 6 boards to use to determine my average for each country, and after round 3, I will have 9 boards used to determine the average, so average values will sway less as the tournament continues. This is to help account for the possible meta-gaming that naturally occurs in tournaments.

If you have further questions, post them here.

Is there a specific design choice in having my Round 1 COUNTRY SC compared against Rounds 1 and 2 and 3 Average Country SC, compared to just Round 1 Average Country SC?

As in, why not have those points given above the scores, why retroactively change them based on future rounds? If anything, it seems to encourage "meta-gaming", in that, say, theoretically, if I score decently as France in Round 1, I would have extra incentive to be anti-French in Round 2 and Round 3 because it retroactively helps my score.

I'm not actively against the system or anything, just want to understand the deeper philosophy.

Was there a specific design choice behind not putting any kind of WTA mechanic? All the tournaments I've recently been to and some others (such as Carnage) do; is there traditionally not for WebDip tournaments?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
12 Nov 14 UTC
Once scores are in for round 1, they don't change. Therefore, scores from round 2 are based on round 1 turnouts, but points are not re-allocated for round 1.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
12 Nov 14 UTC
Oh, so Round 1 uses Round 1 average, Round 2 uses Round 1 + Round 2 Average, and Round 3 uses Round 1 + Round 2 + Round 3 average?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
12 Nov 14 UTC
@Valis: There is a WTA mechanic in that solos will always gain considerably more points than non-solos. For example, Austria could solo in board 2. If he does, then he will gain a significant number of points more than Austrian players that failed to solo.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
12 Nov 14 UTC
But the difference between a solo and a 17 is trivial and/or not particularly non-linearly larger than the difference between a 17 and a 16, no?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
13 Nov 14 UTC
True enough, so you'll have to gauge how much a solo is worth. I have done several samples using random finished games and found that the winner can come down to 1 center.

Couple this with best country awards, a solo can mean the difference between taking home a prize and not.

I think this score system it's a lot more closer to PPSC then WTA.

Can you please clarify if surviving players' score are impacted if there is a solo on their board?
ag7433 (927 D(S))
13 Nov 14 UTC
So.. there is no benefit to solo or draw? No motive to reduce the draw for #'s in the draw? Purely PPSC on average?

Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

Sorry, just want to clarify this:

Round 1 uses Round 1 average, Round 2 uses Round 1 + Round 2 Average, and Round 3 uses Round 1 + Round 2 + Round 3 average?

@Valis - that is correct.

Also might be worth mentioning another game will be ending very shortly. The last one up should come to a close at the end of this week if I had to guess.

I would like to just mention that your numbers at the top were off for the finalization of board 2. Turkey had 1 SC, and Italy had 0 SCs. (Not that I think it will change too much, but I wanted to point that out).

Why start at 50(d) instead of zero?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
07 Dec 14 UTC
@Atrum: the above was an example, and not meant to be accurate. The actual values are on my profile page.

@Jeff: Simply to list scores as positive values instead of having to deal with negative values. It's easier to add and subtract numbers from positives instead of negatives. As a math teacher, i can handle it, but it's less confusing to others.

2014 Webdiplomacy Tournament Update
Round 1 has completed and I have updated the standings of each player in the game. In addition, I have sent out the next wave of passwords for round 2's games to those individuals responsible for creating boards 4, 5 and 6 of the tournament. Congratulations to those topping their respective boards! I have also included the scoring updates in greater detail below.

Discount for taking over left position
Is it still under consideration to allow people to take of left positions for half price? This could encourage a lot more players to join games in progress. The pot has already been paid, so it's bonus money for the current players, and incentive to come in at a disadvantage (often).
