The Greatest Musical Act Tournament: Broup A: 1600s-1960
And so we begin The Greatest Musical Act Tournament with Group A...or, as every group will be called here, "The Group of Death" (as the World Cup has taught me that's the only name to give to any group ever.) :p How will the Great Composers fare? Which immortal band or act will bring about the most outrage? Who will Team Vergil pull for THIS time...while Shakespeare sulks in the corner, STILL wondering how he lost...TWICE. :p Here we go!

Need a Substitute Player
One player in a game has gone MIA and the balance is completely thrown off without him playing. If anybody wants to take over England in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147466&msgCountryID=0 then please let me know so I can get the admin to swap you in. It is a 7 day phase game with a cheap buy in so there isn't a huge commitment but it would help the game and England is not in a bad spot anyway.

Ham/CB Radio in Car
I'm thinking of getting a radio for my car, probably starting off with CB and then maybe upgrading to Ham. I'd imagine there is an overlap between Diplomacy and Ham radio, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts.

Webdiplomacy Tournament
We have nearly filled all 3 boards with official players. I currently have two players on stand-by incase we can't fill the boards. Hellenic Riot has agreed to join if we get to 20 which is just 2 players away. Surely we have 2 players that would like to donate $10 and join this unprecedented online tournament format!

The point was rather straightforward. Women beyond childbearing years cannot pass the property to their progeny and thus, keep it in the family so re-marriage during widowhood doesn't resolve the issue.
KingCyrus (511 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
Can you look at it from a Catholic person's point of view please?
1. This rule comes from God ( I don't care if you think it doesn't, just play along)
2. Doesn't really matter if I like it, I should do it
Voila!

So you believe that not allowing divorce or polygamy is a scam for money? So, is the US outlawing polygamy the same? Or any other country that does so?
Putin33 (111 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
"Putin33 thinks religion is stupid and therefore can't even talk about it abstractly without his prejudices seeping in."

You're not making a case that it isn't stupid. You're just doing the usual "that's how it is, it doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense", routine.
Putin33 (111 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
"So you believe that not allowing divorce or polygamy is a scam for money? So, is the US outlawing polygamy the same? Or any other country that does so?"

Not anymore, we're no longer a land-based society. But yes in agricultural societies it absolutely is.
KingCyrus (511 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
How does that make any difference if they were allowed to divorce? The point is completely irrelevant.

Putin, ALL of these arguments are based on the belief in God. Without that fundamental starting point, yes, it is irrational. Every rule is irrational without a cause.
KingCyrus (511 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
Putin, if you're argument is based on agricultural societies and land, it doesn't work out. These "rules" that were "made up" were during the Old Testament when, guess what, the Jews were nomads.
Invictus (240 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
KingCyrus has it right. If you don't believe in God then, yeah, it is all irrational. But, with God, it's enough to say "that's just how it is." Rather like a parent saying "because I said so."

That's to answer your general argument. The widow one is just about the most senseless I've ever read.
Putin33 (111 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
"1. This rule comes from God"

Does it? Deut. 24:1.
KingCyrus (511 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
Yes, it does

Matthew 19:1-10

"These "rules" that were "made up" were during the Old Testament when, guess what, the Jews were nomads."

They were not nomads. Cain and Abel engaged in farming, animal husbandry and built a city.
Putin33 (111 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
And the rules did not come from the OT, but the NT. The OT permitted divorce.

"Matthew 19:1-10"

Yes, look at verse 7 there,

"7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”"

So the rules don't come from the OT.

Verse-slinging doesn't work on Catholics. Church tradition is just as important as scripture.
KingCyrus (511 D)

Conceded, it did come from the NT.

So, now your argument is that Jesus was planning on creating a worldwide religion and in order to sustain that religion he would forbid divorce so that widows would give their estates to the Church. Genius.
KingCyrus (511 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
^Invictus, that also

"Verse-slinging doesn't work on Catholics. Church tradition is just as important as scripture."

An argument which I already made in another thread, thanks for noticing.

"So, now your argument is that Jesus was planning on creating a worldwide religion and in order to sustain that religion he would forbid divorce so that widows would give their estates to the Church. Genius."

Well Joseph was going to divorce marry and rather than call him a sinner for thinking of doing so, he is considered a righteous saint.

So methinks the hardness on divorce came pretty late in the game.
Putin33 (111 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
*Mary, not marry.
KingCyrus (511 D)
15 Oct 14 UTC
Putin, I noticed and agreed with you.

Joseph was going to do what he thought was right. Why? Because that was currently the Old Law. The Old Law was given "because of the hardness of your hearts."

That also has nothing to do with the fact that Jesus would have had no idea how that could later be used to further the material gain of the Church. Unless He was actually God...
KingCyrus (511 D)

Have to admit that was a rather convenient typo on your part. The play on words, though unintentional, was good.

Eternal stalemate?
OK, we're playing a gunboat right now and there's been a crystal clear stalemate for two whole years, but the 17-center guy won't accept the draw. What to do? We can't play all night.

Welcome Back, NHL Hockey! Who Makes the Playoffs, and Who Hoists the Cup?
The Good Old Hockey Game is back again! :) The (grrr) defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings look amazing...my beloved Anaheim Ducks upgraded, and look to make another run, as the Blackhawks, Blues, Avs and Wild are all on the rise in the Wild Wild West. The Bruins and Canadiens still look great, the Rangers look to rebound, the Pens and Caps look to rebound as well...who makes the playoffs, and come June, which Captain gets to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup? :D

Draw or Cancel?
I thought it might be interesting to get peoples thoughts on 'fairness' in a situation where one or more players fail to fight to the bitter end because - neither a draw or a cancel usually seems fair.

Call Out for Fill-Ins
Alright, while there's still time to sign up, today is the last day, and I get the impression that who we have is going to be "it". This is a call to those in the forum that want to play in the tournament but don't want the buy-in. This is a low-committment committing to only the round which you sign up for. We need 5 players that want to start this round to fill boards. I will take the 5 players with the highest reliability ratings.

NFL Pick 'em Week 6: Who's For Real?
Week 6 has already seen Andrew Luck and the Colts pop the Texans' bubble...it also features a match-up between the surprising Bills and the surprisingly-inconsistent Patriots. The Cowboys roll into Seattle red-hot to take on the Seahawks in their house of pain. The Panthers and Bengals square off to see who's for real and who's in trouble, and the same goes for the Bears/Falcons and Giants/Eagles game. Week 6...Pick 'em!
