I think this game is extremely well suited for online play, and I love playing on here since it is so difficult to do so in person, but to me there is one snag that really frustrates me and is an obstacle I struggle to overcome: Being online when the game starts.
This has played both in my favor and to my disadvantage, but I think it is a huge part of the game, and makes a big impact on whether or not you succeed in the game. Many times I've come to the board 8 hrs after the game started to find myself seemingly behind the rest of the board in communicating. And on the flip side, I know that if I am on when the game starts I strike up conversations with the other people who are on as I have that rush of starting a new game that keeps me very talkative.
The reason I bring this up is becasue it frustrates me when it happens to me, yet I am the type of player who does the very thing I find so frustrating. If I am France, and start the game where England is immediately online, I will talk England's ear off. It gets to the point where England and I have built so much rapport that Germany is way behind when he logs on, and I have already spent much of my time and energy working out ideas with England. I know that I should spend as much time talking to each power, but realistically I know that this isn't what actually happens. In this scenario, Germany is off to a poor start with me, only for the reason that he was not online at the time that the game started and I sent my initial messages.
Does anyone else view this as a negative, and is there any way to mitigate this from happening. I'm not saying it makes or breaks the game, but I do think it has great influence in how many games first years go.
