School Of War: Winter 2011 Semester
So, reading some random threads, I've noticed people sporadically bringing up the School of War series. I'm creating this thread to see if there is enough interest, maybe we can set up a new semester's worth of games after the winter holidays... share your thoughts, indicate your interest, or volunteer your veteran services below

I'd like to be added as a student if possible.

There is a very good chance that those of you in the upper end of the GR for undergrad students but with more than 15 games will be put into the grad student pool. I don't have time to go into details now, but there should be more on it tonight or tomorrow.

I have most of the teaching staff for the first game set up. I believe that we are just waiting on one reply now.

As for eligible students . . . after looking at the data, I have loosely applied the GR requirements set out in the earlier post and rigorously applied the standard of no CDs (but didn't apply the standard for number of games played) to arrive at exactly 10 candidates from the list of those interested, which is exactly the number of undergrads we need for 2 games. These 10 candidates are:
Rafaello
Pete U
Eklade
mongoose998
Aeneas17
Jjoey1
Chest Rockwell
JNewton
RoFWaFfLeZ
Still to be determined is who will play in Undergrad 1 (starting next week) and who will play in Undergrad 2. If anybody has a strong preference for playing in Undergrad 1, please let me know here. If any of the teaching staff, and especially the advisers and TAs, for Undergrad 1 have experience with any of these players and would like to request that the student be in Undergrad 1, please PM me.

Now . . . the grad students. We have three eligible:
Bonotow
pastoralan
goldfinger0303
We need 4 more to make this game happen. One possibility is to take people I had signed up to be advisers for this game and have them play, but then we'd be short advisers. Sign up, people!

Anybody who's interested may examine my data here.

An interesting point is that most of you guys have very low message/game ratios. I checked some of the higher ranked players (me, Crazyter, Abgemacht, Ebay), and all of us have M/G ratios of over 100, while most of the players on the student list are under 50. Perhaps your first lesson should simply be to send more press!

I thought I was the only one who check M/G ratio of the players in games I am playing :)

Am looking forward to these games, and I think all students should head those last words from peterwiggin: 'Perhaps your first lesson should simply be to send more press!' That would certainly be my advice :)
gman314 (100 D)
31 Dec 10 UTC
Are gunboats accounted for in those M/G ratios?
peterwiggin (15158 D)
31 Dec 10 UTC
No they're not, but I have 5 gunboats and 10+ live press games out of 32, and my ratio's still over 100.
Hm. Anywhere left you could use me?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

These games are non-anon, correct?
peterwiggin (15158 D)

Want to be a grad student?
@abgemacht
Games are non-anon.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
31 Dec 10 UTC
Great, I've been getting tired of all the anon games I've been playing.
Lemme see what all a grad student entails right quick.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
01 Jan 11 UTC
It entails playing in a game with 6 other grad students, getting help from a mentor, and hopefully giving us a nice EoG statement afterwards.
Hm. I have three CDs on my record, all from live games. There were extenuating circumstances with each one (explained in my profile) but I don't doubt that why they're there is trivial compared to the fact that they are there. As far as GR goes, I believe I plummeted last month (sub-200 to 250ish)... let's see.

GR: 243. Highest rank: 190 (November 2010). 302nd in overall rankings. 3 CDs. The CD rate is a bit high for your grad students (2%, where 2/3 other students have 0), but the GR seems to be in order. I also have over 100 games completed.

Graduate students have 1-to-1 advisors for their game, right?
Oh, whoops, missed your message. Alright, I'm game.
mongoose998 (294 D)
01 Jan 11 UTC
Question, if there are 5 students in a game, who are the other 2? I believe you said they would be analysts, but would that not affect the game?
peterwiggin (15158 D)
01 Jan 11 UTC
The other two are TAs.
gramilaj (100 D)
01 Jan 11 UTC
Well, I guess because I dropped a game in frustration at a totally destablizing CD once I can't be a student...so put me down to be a grad student?
peterwiggin (15158 D)
02 Jan 11 UTC
There were some mistakes in the spreadsheet before. Those should now be fixed.
Also, there I looked at the people whose Dec GRs were not good enough to qualify to be a student to see if their January GR qualified them. This is the list of students eligible for undergrad 1. If you are on this list, expect to receive a PM from me in the next few minutes.

Ignoring the Franco-Prussian War are we?
I mean really it's Chapter One of the modern Franco-Prussian conflict that lead to WWI & WWII. It's also the only one that the Germans won. Alsace Loraine wasn't a big issue until the Germans took it in that war.

THIS Is Why I Am Disillusioned About Democracy As It Is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Tucson_shooting
That's despicable. I don't care if you're a Red or a Blue or a Green or Libertarian or Communist or Facist, if you support gay marriage or not, abortion or not, if you like Obama or not, Palin or not--Plato, ultimately, was right, is right: either you have a dictatorship or a corrupted democracy. Pick your poison. Our political system, now, IS poisoned...and must be changed, this CANNOT HAPPEN...

Crazy Anglican, just curious....
Hey Crazy Anglican, does your grandmother go by the name: "Swedish Mountains"? My grandpa used to bang out this swedish girl near Chicago just after the Korean War. He said she spoke in a 1/2 swedish accent n was worlds of fun, in alll seriousness. Just askin.

How much effort do you put into thinking about your moves?
Ivo_Ivanov said recently that he usually plays around eight games a time. I find this amazing considering how well he does in his games.
The only games I have ever won, I have worked really hard at. I have set up positions using jDip and played through every scenario I can think of. But this is quite time consuming. Lately I have become very slack, indeed I might as well play live games. How hard do you try?

You would have two games (though 1 has 2 day phases so you would probably only have to enter I set of moves. The other has 24hr phases). Pretty straightforward games as well. Post if interested.

Seem to be having a bug ordering a convoy.
Hello,
I am ordering a convoy in a game. I fill in the first two boxes, and then try to fill in the third box (where to convoy from).
The browser seems to pause for a few long seconds, then I get a message saying that a script is having a problem. This happens on 4 different browsers that I've tried on 3 different operating systems.
Does anybody have the same problem? What should I do about this?
