School Administrators
They can't seem to focus on important issues... instead focusing on things like arbitrary dress code violations and dumb discussions like whether or not history is worth learning about. I guess they think it's not their job to stop drug use or work with kids on their academics. Maybe sex in middle school isn't a problem to them. What gives?

Be scared... the number of annual deaths by sharks went up this past year! It's coming, folks... the sharks will take over the world! We must kill more! MORE, I SAY, MORE!! 70 million sharks deaths a year is not enough... we must deliver retribution!

These are the things that bug me... these are the stories that say I have no reason to be a soldier and that I shouldn't enlist because I don't get any respect for it... these are the things that scare me away, not warfare.

Hypocrisy
Hypocrisy, I think, is one of the worst human traits, because it violates the rules of rhetoric and deceives both the hypocrite and their listener, obstructing reason and acceptance in the way of subversion and blind authority.

Russian Gold Buying Binge

Thoughts? Russia is on a gold buying binge. Thoughts? Are they acknowledging something about the global economy and the potential demise of the US dollar?

Masters Interest
This is just a thread to judge if there is enough interest in the community to start another round of the Masters. Note that this tourney does take more than 40 players to start, and will take 6-8 months to complete. I'm gonna try to keep this to top 200 GR, due to complaints about the quality of the last round.

Yeah MM, I personally knocked out TheWizard when he was France lol

Ok, so I was trying to redeem myself for my previous mistake in my posted tournament setup, and so I wrote a program to find such a tournament. It turns out that it is in fact true that there is no way to make the perfect 43 player tournament I was hoping for. Reading back through goldfinger's previous posts, it seems like he already knew that... so I kinda feel like an idiot.

As far as my playing in the tournament, I won't be able to be a reliable player (I am in zero games right now) until March. Depending on what the sitters are hoping to do, I would be thrilled to be a part of the tournament if sitters can cover for me until then.
48hours: 0
36hours: 3 (+1)

And initially I thought 8 games but I think MM is right given the general performance with different countries (although Italy and Austria are better than people say!)

48hours: 1 (Yonni)
36hours: 4 (goldfinger, josunice, GenLee, MadMarx)

Are we voting on the 42 (7 rounds) versus 49 (8 rounds)? I also would lean towards each power only once being the more important criteria - but there are a few guys I would prefer not to see twice, if asking <GRIN>
42 - 7 rounds: 3 (josunice, MadMarx, GenLee)
uclabb - I'll ask around
And jos, Iets see if we're physically able to create a 42 player schematic first.

Im gonna have to bust out my excel skills...i keep expecting someone else is gonna do it. lol classic.

48hours: 1 (Yonni)
36hours: 5 (goldfinger, josunice, GenLee, MadMarx, Soc. Dis.)
I've been trying on excel for days lol. It didn't take me this long to work out the 49 player scheme last year
I have a strong suspicion that a 43-player schedule is much easier than 42, in terms of having less repetition and getting everyone each country.

Oh, and I have a strong preference for 48-hour phases and 7 games. Phase length especially, since this will last a couple months.

Stackelberg - that will mean people have to have *bye* rounds

Hello all!
Goldfinger invited me to join in with this over on VDip - I am a fairly highly ranked player over there (I was 3rd on the latest Elo rankings, although the ranking system has not yet been finalised). Unfortunately, this account is the one I used to play on when I was relatively new to Diplomacy, so it doesn't look very impressive. I'm in if VDip rank is taken into consideration when talking about 'Masters' though :)

I go 48. I could do 24 easily, but if we lose players over 36, we should just go with 48.

36hours: 5 (goldfinger, josunice, GenLee, MadMarx, Soc. Dis.)

Don't tell me you are considering allowing a forum post to influence in-game play, that is blatant metagaming.
Its so obvious, no one would suspect it.....not even a mod
MadMarx (36299 D(G))

uclabb, I suppose we should have realized, about 43 players, after the first six games one person will have to sit out, so in order to even things up, for all of the other 42 players to take a turn sitting out, that would require 42 more rounds of six games...

Regardless, I do very much like what you came up with, and I agree with Stack, the Uclabb System is by far the best approach all things considered! With 42, it sounds like everyone knows they will play someone twice, and the Uclabb System only has a few repeats and those are random (or so I assume, I haven't looked too close lately, but I'll go double check). I think seven games each is very nearly a requirement, and thus we should go with the Uclabb System.

As far as *bye* rounds, that's easy. uclabb's first game should be played at the very end of the tournament, preceded by six rounds of six games, starting with the second game that starts with '1', and the first game that starts with '2', '3', '4', '5', and '6'.

I thought we already agreed to 48 hours?

Is this your paranoïa or your sense of humor speaking? ;0p

I just answered your joke with a joke, yup.

@Goldfinger: I don't want to blackmail or anything. It's just that I really wanted to play but I'm afraid the commitment of 8 games + 2 at the same time is much for me.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
30 Jan 13 UTC

Brand new stupid question of the day
I've been looking back on some of my previous games and I see that there are several people who I've played with that have a big red x next to their names. Is it safe to assume that these players were banned for something? Or am I completely wrong on this?

Austria issue
I have searched the forum for similar topic, haven't found any. However if the issue was somewhere discussed just delete the thread.

Playing Austria is very difficult in most of the cases. Moreover, players usually tend to play a pattern of "lets kill Austria first." Although you may say it is a natural fate of nations that some are stronger other are weaker, personally I think that in the game Austria should have a more equal chances (...)
