I was typing a brief response to the post below about being 'trans' when I refreshed and found that the thread was locked. It was locked with a really great post from Jmo, so thanks for that. The video itself wasn't really that funny or clever, and was laughing at not with, without any sense of awareness; but I take it that that video is a closed issue, so I just wanted to add:

For the record, I did not day that we should lynch on the first day -- I said that we should VOTE to lynch on the first day. Because if I die tonight, that will tell you more that if I'd abstained and died tonight.

Also, I haven't seen any other votes for Jeff. If I were mafia, I would pick someone who an innocent person had already voted for. Then my mafia buddies could back me up, hopefully with another innocent vote or two, and it would look like popular opinion.

I think voting for someone with no votes on him and explicitly not giving any reason to vote for him clearly shows that I don't want someone to die today, but I recognize the value of stirring up animosity.

Also, the brevity of these posts results from me typing them on my phone while my girlfriend glares at me from across the restaurant table. I'll be more involved in discussion when I'm back on my laptop.

Erm, what's the difference between lynching the first day and voting to lynch the first day? As long as we don't force a draw they're the same.

If you don't want anyone to die today then you are supporting a no-lynch. Do you want a lynch or not?

Good to know that you have a reason for disappearing though which is at least a bit better

So Espi. what did you learn from your observational scumhunting?
TrPrado (461 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
1. - Espi - NULL. Has been very back and forth in regards to reads. He's holding off to vote, but I don't think that's too much of an issue. He's switching of between newb scum and newb town in my eyes.

2. - guak - SLIGHT SLIGHT SCUM. Showed up and definitely has a presence, but that's based on just joking around, talking about how much we don't know, and endorsing a bo lynch. His follow on with Jeff is what really caught my eye. He also claims Jeff is buddying up to him, but I don't see Jeff seriously doing that.

3. - TrPrado - TOWNIEST OF ALL TOWNS

4. - phil_a_s - NULL, but I'll try looking through again

5. - ND - SLIGHT SLIGHT TOWN. He was here earlier, and he seemed to be trying to find scum. So I'm really just waiting to hear his thoughts so far.

6. - bo_sox48 - NULL. Hasn't shown up yet.

7. - Yoyoyozo - SLIGHT TOWN. He's had a pretty active role of scumhunting so far, so yeah.

8. - DeathLlama9 - NULL. At first it felt like maybe scum, but that gut feeling has since passed.

9. - americaslacker - NULL. Hasn't shown up yet.

10. - Jeff Kuta - NULL. The first to vote on bo, which is the biggest thing so far, but I don't actually see anything scummy.

11. - SaladinSmith - NULL. Hasn't posted much.

12. - Balki Bartokomous - SLIGHT TOWN. He's done some clear scumhunting and has tried to keep town in line and having them do the same.

13. - Lucland - NULL. Hasn't shown up yet.

Ooooooo actual reads! Thoughts to come in a sec
DeathLlama8 (514 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
1. Why aren't you voting your scumread in favor of bo because the green dot is trustable (it's not)?

2. What exactly has ND done?

3. What do you think in general about the bowagon?
DeathLlama8 (514 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
A general concern I have about your reads is that you have a ton of slight townreads just for contributing, but you don't appear to have closely looked at them (scum can contribute too) - that's probably going to change later in the game though
TrPrado (461 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
I'll probably have to look back to see what exactly it was about ND that pulled me that way, but I think it was something about the way he interacted with Espi.
Regarding the bo wagon:
I expect to pull off of bo at some point and to try to kill that wagon into nothingness, but for now I want to put pressure on him and get him to talk. I want information so that we can find more scum than just that one read (especially since it's slight*2), but I do expect to switch back possibly at some point.
DeathLlama8 (514 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
I mean what do you think about Guak and Jeff's position on the bo-wagon?
TrPrado (461 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
It feels almost like Jeff's reasons are similar to mine for being there. It's feels like he's trying to get bo to talk. On the other hand, guak has only given joke reasons for being there (Jeff has provided joke reasons as well, but they aren't his sole basis from the way I see it), and that he's there just to be there and possibly actually lynch bo.
Espi (338 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
Why do I keep agreeing with Tr?

Also DL, those that do suspicious actions that immediately catch my eye, I have commented on. What I have also learned is that this is a fun game.
TrPrado (461 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
Regarding ND: He looks like he was trying to get information and clarification out of Espi in some of his later posts, and that felt like it was kind of important.
DeathLlama8 (514 D)

##UNVOTE SALADINSMITH

Most of my points no longer stand, but I want to know his perspective on lynch v. no-lynch and most of his contributions have been already said - he didn't contribute anything new despite putting some effort into his first post.
SaladinSmith (100 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
Back on my laptop now, and I can explain myself a bit better. I've played six games on a much smaller forum than this. I believe we had between six and nine players per game. We might even have broken double digits once or twice, but it wasn't a regular thing. And we did have a game where everybody abstained on the first day, the mafia killed someone at random, and the innocents had to start from scratch on the second day with no information whatsoever.

That's why voting for a lynch on the first day is important in my mind. I don't want a lynch, and voting for someone I don't expect to get lynched should result in no lynch, but a wasted lynch vote and an abstain vote are completely different because one of them actually has a chance of telling you something depending on who dies that night. And it isn't the abstain vote that does it.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
I'm black guys,

Balki seems to have a head on his shoulders so I'll switch gears to
##VOTE Saladin. That post seems a bit too long to be typed on mobile while engaged in a date with his girlfriend.

@Sal
Do you believe we should lynch the first day? Why or why not?
What are your thoughts on the people who have contributed quite a bit so far (TrPrado, DeathLlama9, Balki, and ND.)
DeathLlama8 (514 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
But if there's no threat of an actual lynch, the information gotten out of the lynch is far smaller. We have a lot more mislynches with more players too.

How exactly does voting for somebody that won't get lynched result in a no lynch? That'll just result in you not having any control over who gets lynched.
DeathLlama8 (514 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
@Yoyo - have you seen Ghug's posts on mobile?

Could you please answer your second question as well as you haven't been on in a while?

DeathLlama8 (514 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
Also, how exactly has ND contributed a lot? He's still working on his giant post apparently
I suspect that Espi is a hacker.

He seems to be either purposefully acting dumb, or doing a poor job of creating a façade to obfuscate his mafianess. Here is my evidence:

On page 1:

EXHIBIT 1
“Well, I am sad to say, I am not Mafia this game. I was really hoping to be either a PR to Mafia on my first game to see what is was like, and if I could win. Obviously no one will believe me right now, but I want to have it down for those looking back to this page end game.”

To me, this mindset of posting in order to look back and gloat later is very much mafia-indicative. If you are vanilla townie, and want to put down your marker so that you can gloat later, you’re going to say a set of early mafia reads, so you can brag about them being correct at the end of the game (or forget they ever happened if they were wrong). Consciously thinking about a page 1 post claiming your roll that you can go back to and brag about seems to me to be the work of a hacker.

He concludes his post with this:

EXHIBIT 2
“Who else thinks that the Cop should not reveal this early on?”

People said so at the time, but I want to reiterate, this seems like a rather overt dumbtell. It could not be more obvious to anyone who knows anything about this game. And Espi said it as if it was a great prompt that might launch a discussion, and as though he was not absolutely sure about it.

After DL and ND got on Espi’s case for the dumbtell, Espi responded (still on page 1):

EXHIBIT 3
“On the small chance that one of the newbies is the Cop, we might as well give them some tips.”

Fine, but why phrase it like you are unsure, and eager to begin a thoughtful discussion about something that is truly, in your mind, just a tip for a newcomer. That explanation did not fit the comment.

Jeff then voted for Espi on page 2, with no explanation. Espi responded with this:

EXHIBIT 4
“Well Jeff is voting for me again, as he has been doing during the sign up. Expected but I would hope that you change that before the day is over. If you do think I am scum, and worthy of a lynch, then I am more then happy to hear your thoughts where there is so little evidence. Other wise, I begin to suspect you might actually be a Goddamn Commie Mutant Traitor!!!”

To me, Jeff’s unexplained vote was an obvious joke. Espi’s response seems more defensive than I would expect from town. He points out to everyone that Jeff was voting for him before, so the joke vote means nothing. He speaks in a very put on towny voice that he is “more than happy to hear your thoughts” if you think he is “worthy of a lynch.” And then he deflects at the end with a joke. I’ll note that I don’t have a strong read from this post alone. But it fits the mafia narrative well, I think. (possible confirmation bias)

At page 3, Guak says “@Jeff: PLEASE DON'T!!!,” which I think was in reference to Jeff doing his “standard ‘vanilla townie’ schtick,” but which Espi thought must be referring to Jeff’s comment that he was scumhunting “Starting with Espi!” So Espi says:

EXHIBIT 5
“Actually guak, please let Jeff target me. I feel he might be one of the better people to convince I am a town, and the sooner we start examining people to see who is town or not, the sooner we can get this ball rolling. I am honored to go first and hope that once I am proven, I can help lead the town to victory.

Do you have any questions for me Jeff, how would you like to proceed, I am new to this.”

As I’ve said earlier, this idea that “hey, everyone ask me questions now so that I can be exonerated” does not make any sense. Hunting is not so artificial, and obviously nobody would be cleared by their self-started inquisition. But Espi goes on with it for several pages as if it is actually a real thing that he believes.

At page 4 Espi says:

EXHIBIT 6
“Yoyo, I think that holding your cards close to you is very smart as it does not show any possibly scum that you suspect them, by voting you state that suspicion openly, which could lead toward them giving away clues, but by not voting, you can get more indirect clues, in my opinion anyway. I may be wrong but this is how I am choosing to play for now.”

I don’t like this explanation. I agree that early votes are not necessary, but certainly not to “hold your cards close to your vest.” We need our cards on the table. We need to share our cards to help each other find town and to force mafia to share their fake cards, which hopefully won’t stand up to scrutiny.

Though, I still cannot tell for sure from this explanation whether Espi is misguided town, or pretending-too-hard mafia. Later on down the page Espi says:

EXHIBIT 7
“I am hoping that by not voting until I get a larger picture, and by not focusing on one person in particular, I might have a chance to get closer to the Mafia, does that make sense?”

No, that does not make sense.

Midway through page 4, Espi says:

EXHIBIT 8
“ND, telling Jeff was blunt from seeing his posts on the forum. I may be wrong or I may be right, but he was also the first to openly target me, and continued to do so before the game begin. If I can clear myself with him I should be golden.

BTW this is fun, being the focus right now. If I appear to be scummy right now, I do apologize, but I understand if I get Lynched day 1.”

The contention that Jeff was bluntly targeting you seems off, and this reaction seems overly defensive. I don’t think anyone has had much pressure on them yet, and it’s hard to generate much pressure anyway so far from the deadline. And saying that clearing oneself from Jeff would make them “golden,” when Jeff has hardly built a case at all, and when we’re on page 4 strikes me as contrived.

Also, saying that “I understand if I get Lynched day 1” on page 4 also strikes me as mafia trying too hard again. At that point, nobody had really stated much of a case on Espi. Espi, at that stage, did you really understand why you would be lynched day 1?

On page 5, Espi says:

EXHIBIT 9
“I am also trying to answer questions (the majority of which are at me) while trying to find out the Mafia. As such I am not putting as much effort into my posts now, as that means I am spending less time answering other questions and finding the Mafia.”

I responded to this and urged Espi not to make excuses for poorly thought out posts, and to take the time he needs to help town. The above message fits the pattern that to me seems overly defensive for the early stage of the game, and the less than ample pressure that was being applied at that stage.

On page 6, Espi said:

EXHIBIT 10
“I am also taking a more observant role in Scum hunting, being a target instead of actually accusing people for now, as I said I would in the very beginning. My accusations will come later.”

I don’t understand this either. If you are town, purposefully “being a target” is bad for town. You’re probably not going to be cleared unless you die. This sort of altruisitic “I’ll be the martyr target for town” just doesn’t make sense and strikes me as an odd ploy to get town cred. It cannot possibly help town unless you are a correct target.

At page 7, Espi says:

EXHIBIT 11
“I do not intend to fully clear myself, in fact if people do not continue to suspect me I will wonder why.”

If you are a townie, asking people to suspect you, why would they suspect you? And why would you draw conclusions from them not suspecting you? This idea is illogical. Surely you don’t actually believe it.

CONCLUSION:

Again, the struggle for me is whether Espi is misguided townie or trying-too-hard mafia. I think that his very first post of the game pushes me over the top to reading him mafia. It just doesn't make sense that a vanilla townie would claim as such on page 1, and eagerly look forward to people going back to read the thread to see that you declared your towniness right off the bat.

Whoops sorry. I had him mistaken for Epsi
@Espi, I'd like to hear you respond to this evidence and explain why I am wrong. Please do not react by saying something like "well, I guess you suspect me and I'm going to be voted out...I can't blame you." If you are town, we need you to convince us that you are the wrong lynch. Also, if anyone of your statements were insincere for any reason (jokes, reaction testing, etc.), please explain them now.
