The Ancient Med - not year 1
What year is the Ancient Mediterranean set? Definitely not year 1AD, by then the Med was a Roman Lake. Carthage was destroyed in 146BC, Egypt fell to Rome in 47BC, Greece had been Roman for centuries. Only Persia can claim some independence on that map.

@CF ... Yeah, NYC is the same. It's the reverse of our cities. Look back in the 1950s though and you'll see that NYC experienced the same white flight as we're seeing in Indy and Cincinnati now. I would guess it's similar with Chicago (though potentially a bit different because there's only two directions to expand - one is lake and one is Indiana).
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Feb 13 UTC
Well, Cinci only has two directions to expand as well. The other two are Kentucky and Indiana and Knetucky requires crossing a river into "the south". :-)
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Feb 13 UTC
And that same renovation of urban Cinci is happening as swell with young professionals buying up condos. The truly wealthy, in Cinci, however either live out away fromt he city or live across the river in the multi-million dollar high rise condos with river views or million plus houses on the KY side of the river in Boone county KY also with gorgeous river views.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
03 Feb 13 UTC
Yeah, that's true, but the development has still taken place. That Don Pablos across the bridge looks really good after being cooped up on the third baseline for three hours.

So you come in for Reds games to GABP? You should go to Fountain Square and eat at some of the eateries there like Palominos (awesome wood fired pizzas) or Rock Bottom BRewery (I think they brew root beer there as well as beer), Boi Na Braza, Morton's, Via Vite, and McCormick & Shmick's or go across to Newport and eat at Hofbrauhaus or any of the places in Newport on the Levy.

Five or six a year... we go to Montgomery Inn afterwards. Boathouse one... it was better when it was here but still way too good to pass up.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Feb 13 UTC
The best Montgomery Inn is the original in Olde Montgomery near Indian Hill and Kenwood. The one in Ft. Mitchell isn't bad either.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
03 Feb 13 UTC
Never been to any other but the Boathouse. I would bet the original is the best one... makes sense.
Celticfox (100 D(B))

Wow I guess North and West don't count either.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Feb 13 UTC
I think he was counting the lake as being north so that Chicago expanded mostly West or South.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
03 Feb 13 UTC
The lake is north/east but if you count suburbs there's plenty in the northwest area.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Feb 13 UTC
Oh, I know it is northeast. I skirt the edge of Chicago whenever I head up to Wisconsin. Madison is such a beautiful town just a bit north of Chicago.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Feb 13 UTC
And really, suburbs aren't restricted by state lines as Cincinnati can attest to. In recent years the Ohio folk have started discovering the beauty of the Kentucky side of the river and Northern Kentucky has reaped the benefits with some nice houses/neighborhoods in new subdivision development (cleaner than industry), increased tax revenues, improved infrastructure, and seeing their school systems improve.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
03 Feb 13 UTC
No, state lines don't really matter, but they are a technical barrier.
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
Minor ones though. The only real challenges are titling and registering cars, taxes the year you move, and some things like firearms laws and certain pets.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
04 Feb 13 UTC
For some reason I doubt the firearms laws in Kentucky are much tighter than any of its surrounding states, but whatever...
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
Actually, they are both tighter and looser. But I was talking in general, for instance, moving from Indiana into Chicago with Illinois' more restrictive gun laws.
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
A Cinci example would be for those with Ohio's Concealed Carry, as residents of Kentucky they would have to go through the process all over again.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
04 Feb 13 UTC
Indiana to Illinois sure... just not Cincinnati to Kentucky. I mean maybe technicalities like that but it's not like you'd have to confiscate certain firearms before moving or anything.
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
Again, I was just talking about in general.

They need to bring Beyoncé back out to sing a bit.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
04 Feb 13 UTC
You mean dance and let her background singers do the actual singing?
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Feb 13 UTC
I didn't see the first half or the halftime show. I was out having dinner and then we went shopping for some winter PJs (only watch for the commercials which I can see tomorrow online anyhow).
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
04 Feb 13 UTC
Commercials haven't been great either. CBS is taking half the commercial time to advertise their own shows. And, like all of their other shows, their new ones are all #1 on television. Nothing new there.

Beyonce is great but she needed to do more singing and less dancing to me. Either way, she's Beyonce, it's not like she can be bad...

Boyonce is gorgeous. I just wouldn't of done that exact hair shade on her. Looked a little to harsh. A shade darker would of been a bit better maybe. Anyone watch Elementary after the game?
Draugnar (0 DX)

Just watched it tonight. An excellent episode but then it and Person of Interest make Thursday evenings complete. Those two shows are never bad.

Draws
Sifting through 10 pages of open positions, I am noticing that it's increasingly uncommon that people actually draw for a CD. In a few games, people have pushed for it, and others have seemed to have no understanding as to why they'd draw for a CD. Did this etiquette just disappear like magic? Pre-1903 CDs should *always* constitute a draw and post-1903 CDs should constitute a draw if they result in a loss of a line that would otherwise be present. When did this stop?

I just got an email today from Edi Birsan. Allan Calhamer, creator of the board game diplomacy, has passed away. His daughter said her mother "would welcome any memories/stories about Allan or thoughts on what Diplomacy has meant to you."
So please put in thoughts and memories about diplomacy and I'll collect them and send them to her.

There is $2 Trillion in American money of all world currencies in circulation combined. The U.S. National debt is $16 Trillion. So there is literally not enough money in the world to pay it back.

For the easy payment of 15 D, you can enjoy the chance to rule the
world with The World Wide Schlieffen Plan. ( http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=111246 ) . If you can take 10 minutes out of you day for possible world domination, than this deal is for you. In fact this deal is just to good. I'm gonna have to put a time limit
of 7 days for this. I would wait that long though. there's only 13 spaces

So, ckroberts just pointed out that in a newspaper article on something US supreme court judge Roberts said about Massachusetts, whereas the debate could have possibly been resolved by providing data, they treated it as a "he-said he-said thing". I actually see that a lot.
