Fox News
This is one of the saddest and funniest (in a twisted sort of way) videos I have ever seen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RClJ6vK9x_4
This seemed very apropos of the debate in the NPR thread re: Fox's reliability compared with other stations. This seems to me to provide the definitive solution to that debate.
Thoughts?

Zero Tolerance or Turn The Other Cheek?
I recently had an encounter with an annoying little twerp in which he crossed (in my opinion at least) the metagaming line. The question is should I bother to mention it to our already overworked mods? Should we attempt to crush all damaging forms of metagaming with an iron first, or should we ignore the more minor forms of cheating?

Performance issues
As a newbie I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or not, but I am seeing two performance problems that are quite irritating. I time out readying orders, and also every time I change pages on the site there is a delay of 10 seconds or so before I can do anything. Is this normal?

Proper English in diplomatic correspondence.
What is your opinion on using proper English in diplomatic correspondence as opposed to shorthand (like u = you, wanna = want to etc.) I am usually less likely to trust a shorthand player and prefer full English communications.

Mostly Irrelevant Question
So, I didn't think this would ever come up, but:

If you have an SC left, but it's not one of your home centres, and your last unit is destroyed, and then the game ends, what goes on your record? And are you considered defeated immediately? Or not until someone walks over to your SC and sits there over the winter?

"Rango" is Lousy
I like Johnny Depp. I think "Gilbert Grape," "Pirates otC I," "Ed Wood" and "Sleepy Hollow" are all very good. But I saw "Rango" today, misled by the generally good reviews, and found it dark, vulgar, violent, slow and fatally self-aware in an ironic, in-jokey way. If you loved it, peace to you. I did not.

I think hellalt's comments are extremely out of line, much more than anything Jesus said.

For one, he is making public an assesment of the last game he should not be making public AT ALL.

And for two, he is explicitely saying that the powers in the unfinished game should discuss who is who to take out one of the other powers.

And he's supposed to be RUNNING this thing.
Troodonte (3379 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
xapi:
I agree that those comments were unappropriate too...
I was just commenting my game and what happened before it was drawn...
But yes, hellalt took some conclusions that shouldn't be exposed like that.
Xapi (194 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
That's ok Troodonte, I won't comment on rd's call at all, I'm just saying that you took offense in what JesusPetry said, whereas I think hellalt's comments are much, much worse.
hellalt (70 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
Xapi, my conclusions were right.
You and your team tried to manipulate both games.
Your team should be disqualified just for that.
hellalt (70 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
So, you ve got some nerve trying to turn this against me...
Xapi (194 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
I won't comment on my game, but I have never, ever, under any circumstance, told another player in my game who I was, or who I thought another player was, to influence their desitions. And that is exactly what you did, while not even being a part of the game.
hellalt (70 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
Actually I didn't.
You just did with your message.
I claimed BY REASON (I'm entitled to use reason whenever I like) that the only way the gunboat game was ON PURPOSE delayed was because Austria in the standard game was played by the same team.
YOU were the one to reveal I was right with your last message.
I was making a hypothesis that you VERIFIED.
So blame yourself dude.

ps: I still believe your team should be banned for indirectly braking the rules manipulating 2 games' duration .
Maybe that's the only reason you are currently ranked 1st...
JesusPetry (258 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
Sorry, Troodonte. I only noticed that I was writing what I shouldn't after hitting send.
Xapi (194 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
Wrong. You're not entitled to put forth your reasoning in a post if it is about what other people should do in their game.
Xapi (194 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
"Actually I didn't.
You just did with your message."

Also, this is the best example I've seen of childlike finger-pointing from a grown man. My post says absolutely nothing.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Feb 11 UTC
Actually, according to the tournement rules Hellalt *you* are closer to cheating. The rules say:
"The games are anonymous, to avoid metagaming from same country teams or from swing teams."

Well, South America wanted to keep the game from finishing, because it would/has caused metagaming against them. Also, this is why you shouldn't have an organiser overseeing their own actions.
Rubetok (766 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
@hellalt: I agree with you that "knowledge is power". You should know metagaming is not allowed though.
In my opinion, rdrivera was keeping his game from finishing to avoid metagaming in the Standard 1. And what you wanted is exactly the opposite: the relevant information capable to guide the players in the last game. Well, it seems you've got it already.
Besides, what you did in the forum is against the rules too, pointing out who is who and blaming my team for things you are not sure.
If there is someone that should be disqualified here it is you.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
@Rube - I agree, but unfortunately that call was DJEcc's to make, and he said draw it
JesusPetry (258 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
And I can't stop saying how sorry I am for making that comment. Every time I think of that it sounds more stupid. Apologies especially to my teammates!
hellalt (70 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
Well I think you understand shit of what I'm saying.
Xapi let me tell you one more time in plain English.
I MADE A HYPOTHESIS, YOU CONFIRMED IT.
So you are just STUPID man.
Don't blame me for that. Blame nature or god.
Now go fuck off.
hellalt (70 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
Also what the fuck are you talking about?
What metagaming did I you SHITHEADS?
South America wanted to keep the gem going to MANIPULATE the last result to win the cup.
I don't see how the fuck I did any metagaming.
Are you retards or what?
I guess that's what you can expect from Americans...
ffs go get a brain.
DJEcc24 (246 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
i said draw it because the majority of the players in the game wanted it to be. I apologize to turkey for that but it just needed to get done anyways. as far as manipulating and all. Team members can know who the other team members countries are. i do not see how waiting though would change the outcome of the gunboat game. it was still a stalemate no mater what and the other countries would not be allowed to know who's team each other are on.That would be metagaming.
Xapi (194 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
@hellalt

I confirmed or denied nothing. What you said may or may not be truth. But you weren't entitled to say it.

Once again in plain English, not for you but for DJE who seems to have overlooked what you said: Making a public analysis of who is who in a game to encourage the players in that game to take certain actions is certainly metagaming. And that is what you did.

Also @DJE: WTF??? Now we draw games because the mayority of the players want them drawn? You better think that through and come up with a better answer han that.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
@Hellalt - I'm English.

@DJE - They wanted to keep the gunboat going, because as soon as it was concluded people in the other game would know its result, and therefore it would affect THAT game. Therefore if forcing the game to finish, you encourage this meta-gaming.
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))
06 Feb 11 UTC
First of all I want to apologize with Troodonte and Hammac for delaying an obvious draw, but I feel if the game ends before the standard one if could interfere on what will happens there one way or another.
Second, I explained my reasons to DJE, the tournament director and he said I could keep playing. Then he decided that the game should be draw, probably because the forum posts. I accept his decision, but don´t agree, anyway he is the tournament director not me. And why in the hell I could be breaking some rule if I told first for DJEC why I was postponing the game end?

Jesus - No problems, at least you are a man to recognize you are wrong and apologize.

Hellalt - You are an idiot and asshole, but hey, there is no news on that.
hammac (100 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
@rdrivera - to begin - thanks for being part of a great game - as with the first gunboat you came close to winning outright. Thanks also to Troodonte for the alliance - we managed to force the draw. At no point was I approaching the possibility of a win and for a long time it was obvious that if either of us stabbed it would have handed Turkey (and for a long while Russia) the upper hand.

As for the wait for the draw - I cannot deny getting thoroughly fed up waiting for the game to finish and the possibility that through other pressures (or carelessness) one or other of us would have missed a turn or entered wrong moves. I see now that you had a reason and thus am happy to accept your apology for this. Perhaps I am too honest but as I had no idea who was which country in either game and was simply attempting to maximise my score for the team in the tournament it never crossed my mind to worry what was happening outside of this game.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
Why is it so hard for people to not talk about games in progress? Seriously...
DJEcc24 (246 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
I just did what i thought was best and what would move the tournament along. It was probably a wrong call but it is what it is.
hammac (100 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
and I have no complaints DJE - one's (sorry sounds pompous but is unambiguous) whole life is spent taking decisions based on the information that is available at the time. Seemed the right decision to me at the time too.
Xapi (194 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
@TGM: The only ones who talked about ongoing games are JesusPetry, who apologized right afterwards, and hellalt, who is "an idiot and an asshole", as RD put it. So most people don't have a problem with it.

@DJE: I'm still waiting on you to say something about what hellalt did. Not expecting a resolution, but if you as a tournament director think it is OK that tournament assistant does what hellalt did, then I'm gonna have to rethink the way I've been playing this tournament from the beginning.
hellalt (70 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
"First of all I want to apologize with Troodonte and Hammac for delaying an obvious draw, but I feel if the game ends before the standard one if could interfere on what will happens there one way or another."
So I was right.
They didn't delay the game to avoid metagaming.
They delayed it to cause metagaming and maipulate two games.
After stupid rdrivera's confession I request that South America tm is banned from the cup.

Xapi: You are just to stupid to respond to. I prefer talking to a worm.

hellalt (70 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
"They wanted to keep the gunboat going, because as soon as it was concluded people in the other game would know its result, and therefore it would affect THAT game. Therefore if forcing the game to finish, you encourage this meta-gaming."
That's your interpretation.
None of the south american team members ever claimed that.
In fact rdrivera's confession says the exact opposite.
Are you pretending to be stupid or are you one?
I guess the former.
Just because you don't like me doesn't mean I'm wrong.
Xapi (194 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
Men, you're beyond stupid. Where do you go from "The game ending soon would interfere with the other game" to "They delayed it to cause metagaming and manipulate two games"???

I can prove through my personal messages what RD's intentions were. And I will after SG1 is over.

But what you did was out in the open and I still haven't heard from your superior about it.
DJEcc24 (246 D)
06 Feb 11 UTC
After reading through again the comments probably were not the best choice. lets refrain from talking about the ongoing game. but yeah hellalt that was sketchy.
Xapi (194 D)
07 Feb 11 UTC
" 2. Not drawing on purpose is manipulating the system to get an unfair advantage. Knowledge is power. My guess is that Turkey knows that if the 3way draw participants in the gunboat DON'T get revealed, then the team Turkey is playing for will win if they also get a 3 way in the other game (standard 2). 3 way draw is the most probable result there.
But if the names ARE revealed then the 2 other players in the standard game will ally to kill whatever country the team that plays Turkey in the gunboat is playing there (cause otherwise that team will win the cup)
Obviously it can't be England cause then he wouldn't have any fear, even if Austria and Turkey allied. Turkey is also safe even if Austria and England attack him.
Most likely it's Austria and probably South America or Iberia.
Haha, I got it right, didn't I?

So Turkey in the gunboat game and Austria in the standard game are the same team.
Allow him to keep the gunboat game going forever and they ll get 2 3way draw and win the cup.
Don't allow him and they don't win the cup. "

I don't get how posting this evaluation publicly is "sketchy" and not completely against the rules.

Country assignments
A group that I play with are moving our correspondence game to web diplomacy. Normally, we switch country assignments between games so people don't have to play as the same country twice in a row. Is there a way to manually select who plays as what country or can it only be done randomly?

Readying orders.
I'm in an anonymous gunboat (might be a tautology, still new-ish) at the moment with someone who saves his orders but never readies them, as there are 24 hour phases where most people are finished after around 10 or so this this could be getting quite annoying if it continues throughout the game. Just wondering if there's any way to communicate that it would be good for them to ready them?

Fear or greed?
The Sage of Omaha once said that investors should try to be "fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful." Which tendency, if either, tends to govern your Dip play, especially when you divert from a long-range plan (i.e. to stab earlier than you had hoped)?

This Time On Philosiophy Weekly: "What Do YOU Think Heaven And Hell Are Like, Then?"
That's a question I got on the bus this week, and it's been on my mind ever since, sort of simmering there...just when I think I'm happily ready to watch a movie, on comes Hamlet and instantly he's talking about this and that about death and there the question is again, so I put it to you as well, WebDip members--play Dante. If YOU could have your perfect, 100% version of what the two "afterlives" are, what would each be like? Is it anything to be excited about?
