Monetization via distributed processing ?
After the trial a week ago distributed processing seems to be a potentially effective way to monetize the site without irritating ads or premium accounts. It's not as lucrative, but it is better and more consistent than donations, and it would still provide an incentive for me to work on the more mundane coding which I'm otherwise not interested in

I think most people would gladly trade some (otherwise unused) CPU usage while playing to see further development on the site (and perhaps leave their browsers open as an alternative to direct donation).
But I'd like to hear from those who experienced crashes a week ago, it was the only negative aspect of the trial and it seemed to only be a small subset of Firefox 3.0.1 users, so hopefully it can be resolved and I can go ahead with it

Why was Good Times-2 drawn?
Not all of the players voted for a draw, and now I have received less points than I paid to buy-into the game.
Could a Moderator/Administrator explain and possibly rectify the situation?

Massive NMR's in -01 why do you punish yourselves this way?
I just looked at the open games and found two that stand out with 3 or 4 countries that did not move in 1901. Why are you all remaining people playing these games? Call for a draw and end the misery. It is not Diplomacy if you do not have 7 active players.

Rules Download
New to the game and the site... where do I download a complete set of rules? The obvious ones I get, but the more remote ones I'm having trouble with. For instance, if I make an attack out of a country, can an army retreat into it from if dislodged out of another area (not where the attack is directed)? Is my support to a third country cut when the army attacking me is dislodged?

I took over a cd in game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6148 only to find that all the other players had voted for a draw in a paused game. What are our options now? If I allow the game to be drawn, what is my return on my investment in points? Might I be permitted to be removed from the game, as if I had never joined, so that I do not take a "draw"?

Cheaters
In a recently initiated game (Good times-2), 5 accounts were made and joined a 100 point game all together and all within one hour of each other. Additionally, they all submitted and finalized orders within this same hour and all appear to be working toward the two countries not controlled by the suspected owner of the 5. If you look at england's opening in particular, the move to Clyde seems odd.

like that matters, this thread has so many tangents
besides I started the thread anyway.

on a philosophical/theretical level I'm against government period

on a more realistic level, I'm against the system of government we have because it does not represent the people. And the only people that EVER get elected are white, which I am not, have a LOT of money, which I dont, and are either a republican or a democrat, which I am for damn sure not
Sicarius (673 D)

valoishapsburg (314 D)

Well, are you suggesting that we find a way to better represent the people? I dont know if this will turn into a Hamiltonian v. Jeffersonian idea of representatives, but here goes:

Yes, it ridiculous that only the rich get elected to high offices, but that is simply because they have the money to campaign. I think another part of it is that representatives do not need to be reflections of the average American. Do I need to vote for someone in debt because I am in debt, or most people are? Or do I think voting for someone who knows how to make money might be beneficial? Also, Is it imperative that 1/2 of all representatives are women? I think a man can do just as good a job as representing both women and men. I think the same applies for race as well. A black person can represent a predominantly white community just fine.

I think our representatives should not simply be reflections of their constituents, but rather the person the constituents believe will best represent them.

And no, most parties in the US will not represent your view to remove government altogether. I have read some interesting arguments on the advantages and disadvantages of a two party system though.
Sicarius (673 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
it's not about % of reps matching the populace.

sure a rich white man could represent a poor black woman, but the only people they do represent is those who have money
Friendly Sword (636 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
The problem then Sicarius, is not the system, its the people in the system. And the surest, constitutionally enshrined way of getting rid of those people and finding ones who will represent you is.... wait for it... voting.

Along with that goes political association, petitioning, activism, 'working from the inside'.

I like working from the inside... it works.
Sicarius (673 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
yeah it is the people in the system, they're a certain way because the system encourages those specific people to get elected.

not saying working form the inside doesnt work (some examples would certainly help though ;] ) but I dont want to be part of the system at all. I dont agree with how it works. do you not get that?
valoishapsburg (314 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
Sicarius, do you believe that the whole Idea of government is crazy?

Of course all governments have problems, but it is within the power of the people to correct those problems. The people seem complacent not to deal with the problems of government though.
Sicarius (673 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
of course I do I'm an anarchist.

but thats not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about how I dont like this governemtn specifically because it's no longer a gov for the people of the people by the peopel, its a gov against the people, above the people, and made up of those who are not really the people at all
Jerkface (1626 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
Sicarius, do you know who "the people" are? Who are they? Can you describe them to us?
Sicarius (673 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
'the people' is obviously a reference to people who agree with me about everything and would gladly kneel to me if I asked them to.
Jerkface (1626 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
Just as I suspected. No, but, it's a serious question. One that I struggle with constantly.
Sicarius (673 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
I cant describe such a diverse group of people in just a few words.

let me clarify
the government doesnt represent MOST people.

it does represent people who are corrupt and rich and power hungry and usually white and usually very very greedy
Sicarius (673 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
do you disagree?
Jerkface (1626 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
Of the qualities on your list, three apply to the vast majority of people: rich, power hungry and greedy (maybe not with the "very very", but still at least somewhat greedy). Corrupt people are in the minority, I'll cede that, but white people are still a very important section of US American society. Therefore, I think that the government DOES represent most people. In fact, although I absolutely hate and abhor his politics, I think GWBush is a fine representative of the majority of US Americans (call me elitist, but that's how I see it). He taps into the feelings and positions of the majority of US Americans, in my opinion.

valoishapsburg (314 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
One thing I learned today, In 1933 leaders of several large american companies attempted to overthrow the US government in favor of a fascist and national socialist government. One of which was J.P. Morgan. Does that make J.P. Morgan all of its employee's the associates of an unrepentant terrorist? (this last line is a joke, but i think this is a very interesting event)
Sicarius (673 D)

prostitues are about to be legalized in san francisco

ah yes, the coup no one know about. I beleive bush's grandfather was involved as well. it was kind of short lived though. the general they asked to helped them tattled.

you think rich power hungry greedy people are in the majority?
not even rich people are in the majority

Whose eyes would want to see people's life savings disappear? That what this means ultimately. This is people's hard earned money disappearing here. You're just so caught up in your conspiracy theories to see what this is doing to real people. Unbelievable.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
there you go assuming again.

yes the immediate effects are 'bad'
but a lot of very good things can come of this.
and besides the status quo is only working for a small percentage of americans

Jerkface (1626 D)

Define rich, please. I think the vast majority of people in the USA are rich, many of them stinkin' rich. By historical world standards, even the homeless here are livin' the good life.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
I think theres probably much better reasons why people dont take me seriously.

anyway it's true. how worried can a guy with 9 houses really be about the economy? he's gonna be fine so why should he care? yeah he has to give it plenty of lip service if he wants to get elected (so the voter fraud at least seems possible) you cant tell me he really cares, that man is soul-less.
valoishapsburg (314 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
I think the status quo isnt working for sicarius, and he's the only one.

But really, You have so many radical Ideas, and all you really do is bitch about things. Not once have I heard you offer a practical solution, or any solution thus far. This economic situation is not going to destroy the world as we know it. Things happen, the best we can do is try to react appropiately and not over react.
