It makes me laugh when silly curmudgeons try to cast aspersions on others regarding topics for which they have no understanding - as if there is no difference between roller blades and roller skates, and they can only have a single purpose. The narrow-mindedness is frightening and pathetic, truly.
X is for Y -- I don't know why anybody else would use them....I'm sooooooo smart, because I read it in the dictionary.
People use X even though it was originally intended for Y because it's fun and they enjoy it, and it solves multiple problems.
For example, using roller blades one can traverse a very large college campus in a very short period of time, navigate the interior of a building to find their seat in a lecture hall, and get back home for the afternoon bong hit without fear of some douche stealing their bike, or getting a flat tire, etc. Plus, it has the benefit of providing physical exercise. Plus, it provided various sorts of thrills as roving gangs of high-as-a-kite college kids travesed the campus in search of shit to jump over and slide down.
But....but....but....they're only for hockey players....you can't do that....
<sigh...>
