Monetization via distributed processing ?
After the trial a week ago distributed processing seems to be a potentially effective way to monetize the site without irritating ads or premium accounts. It's not as lucrative, but it is better and more consistent than donations, and it would still provide an incentive for me to work on the more mundane coding which I'm otherwise not interested in

I think most people would gladly trade some (otherwise unused) CPU usage while playing to see further development on the site (and perhaps leave their browsers open as an alternative to direct donation).
But I'd like to hear from those who experienced crashes a week ago, it was the only negative aspect of the trial and it seemed to only be a small subset of Firefox 3.0.1 users, so hopefully it can be resolved and I can go ahead with it

Why was Good Times-2 drawn?
Not all of the players voted for a draw, and now I have received less points than I paid to buy-into the game.
Could a Moderator/Administrator explain and possibly rectify the situation?

Massive NMR's in -01 why do you punish yourselves this way?
I just looked at the open games and found two that stand out with 3 or 4 countries that did not move in 1901. Why are you all remaining people playing these games? Call for a draw and end the misery. It is not Diplomacy if you do not have 7 active players.

Rules Download
New to the game and the site... where do I download a complete set of rules? The obvious ones I get, but the more remote ones I'm having trouble with. For instance, if I make an attack out of a country, can an army retreat into it from if dislodged out of another area (not where the attack is directed)? Is my support to a third country cut when the army attacking me is dislodged?

I took over a cd in game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6148 only to find that all the other players had voted for a draw in a paused game. What are our options now? If I allow the game to be drawn, what is my return on my investment in points? Might I be permitted to be removed from the game, as if I had never joined, so that I do not take a "draw"?

Cheaters
In a recently initiated game (Good times-2), 5 accounts were made and joined a 100 point game all together and all within one hour of each other. Additionally, they all submitted and finalized orders within this same hour and all appear to be working toward the two countries not controlled by the suspected owner of the 5. If you look at england's opening in particular, the move to Clyde seems odd.

And, by the way, saying that Canada has no reason to exist, also B.S. Go read your history you weren't taught in the U.S. school system and learn about Canada's founding, Upper and Lower Canada, the Bill of Rights, etc, etc. Bunch of Bullshit from an arrogant american asshole.
Jerkface (1626 D)

Sicarius, it is telling that you're waiting for my advice. You have not recognized it this whole time, as it's basically all I've been writing to you. As they say, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink...
Jerkface (1626 D)

As for the topic, I think it is an interesting statement that the "American ideals" somehow make America a unique country. I definitely agree that other countries have been founded also with ideals, but there is something to be said for the (admittedly racist view) that America is made up of a whole slew of white people who fled one continent to go to another and multiplied like crazy and repopulated a whole space. That act alone is pretty amazing and, as far as I know, not to be seen anywhere else. (If someone can provide an example of a similar quick mass migration, I'm all ears)

So, America is a quirky place, for sure, but I don't think it's the ONLY place that is defined by ideals. Besides, the racial aspect of those ideals have quickly eroded as "native" americans, africans and south americans are all (correctly) considered Americans. The whiteness of American history is losing its uniqueness.
Archonix (246 D)

@Jerkface: I'm pretty sure that Sicarius was mocking you.

On your first point: British/Dutch Africa to a degree, Australia and New Zealand. All of these and America in fact were also defined by things like indentured workers and mass-immigration as well of course. I'm pretty sure that increased reproduction didn't define America :P
Jerkface (1626 D)
19 Oct 08 UTC
Oh yeah, how could I forget those examples? Thanks.
As for the mockery, fine.
valoishapsburg (314 D)
19 Oct 08 UTC
America is the only country capable of reproducing, except for China. They have reproduction patented
Sicarius (673 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
mocking you I was not.

If the advice you're referring to is to 'get out and live' how is it you suggest I do that?
if it's 'everything you've been writing' thats hardly advice. one persons views and opinions are not fit for advice for another

Invictus, how does thr "PATRIOT" act NOT destroy american freedoms???
Jerkface (1626 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
I was referring mostly to things I wrote months ago, when we first encountered each other. My "views and opinions" have, for whatever reason, been pretty bizarrely fixated on you and your condition so I think much of it does qualify as advice. Much of it was directed at you.
Invictus (240 D)

It just doesn't. It has problems, but the sky's not falling. If it did, we'd know.
Sicarius (673 D)

I read what you had to say. you had some very good points and DID managae to change my opinion on a few things. cant recall what exactly right now but I know you did.

but then sometimes theres the, get a job and vote or dont bitch. type of posts which I largely ignore
Sicarius (673 D)

"it just doesnt"

really man? thats not an argument, thats denial
Invictus (240 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
I never called you a bitch. I called you a pinko, but not bitch. That's rude.

I'm not going to bother defending the Patriot Act to you. You're obviously an irreconcilable kook on this and I don't want to waste my time or yours.

I guess I just see the best in America and you see the worst. Changing either of our minds would be like converting a 90 year old monk to Wicca. It's a just too ingrained and important to be changed, especially in an online forum.

I'll give you this, Biff, you're dedicated. I can certainly respect that.
Invictus (240 D)

And if you're gonna keep putting stuff on here, at least join a game! You're on here enough.
Jerkface (1626 D)

I seriously doubt I ever encouraged anyone to vote. Pretty much a waste of time but, unfortunately, I'm gonna fall for it this time cause everyone else is doing it. peer pressure can be fun.
Sicarius (673 D)

Sicarius (673 D)

yeah you're right, I didnt want to join any games because of my unreliable access, and my hatred of cd's

but I have fairly reliable access now that I'm off the road
so join my game

theres no choice in voting anyway
obama or mccain
thats no choice at all.
and theres only 2 to choose from

thats like someone asking if you like to have your tongue sliced with razor blades everyday for a few hours, or having a pineapple shoved up your ass once a week.
which would you pick?

like I said, I'll be voting from the rooftops
Friendly Sword (636 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
Oh, and Archonix, you once again forgot the proud multicultural, post-colonial country of Canada!

Not a melting pot, but a 'cultural mosaic'. Our schooling system says that this choice of terminology implies one of the major differentiations between Canada and the US... :P

The idea is ingrained if nothing else.
valoishapsburg (314 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
There are plenty of other candidates for president. Those two are simply the two major parties. I get tired of people they can only choose between two candidates is ridiculous. People have it in there head that if you dont vote democratic or republican you have wasted your vote. If enough people feel the same away about the current political system then they should vote for a third party. Besides, according to Politcalcompass.org Nader is the candidate closest to me. but then again its only a quiz
Friendly Sword (636 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
Well Sicarius, considering you're (I assume) American, (I assume) enfranchised, and (I assume, logically) not a big fan of Republica/Deomcrats, I'm suprised you're not aware there are other parties and individuals you can in fact vote for, as a protest vote if nothing else.

Otherwise your totally silent. The system may not work well for real change, but at least its fairly accountable and visible. If no one voted for the main party candidates, they would in lose.

By cynical all you like, but being completely unactive at the same time you critique the country is unsupportable. Fight the good fight, participate in process, vote, riot, whatever.

Just don't bitch from a computer chair and expect results. Only ridicule :P
valoishapsburg (314 D)

Yeah, Sic, this is what I tried to convince you to do. Use the system... use it. You will gain a lot of credibility and legitimacy and respect, and even progress to your cause if you use the system.

An Anarchist Political Party is not not not not a paradox.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
20 Oct 08 UTC
Oxymoron I should have said.
Sicarius (673 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
I dont beleive in electoral politics. they're unfair and at the most base level, ridiculous. yeah I dont like mccain or obama, but thats doesnt mean I like nader or pal or mckinny or any other politician. I may not vote, but I am far from silent. dont mistake me for some kind of armchair revolutionary.
inactive I can assure you I am not.

voting is not being active.
voting is being pliant and coerced

valoishapsburg (314 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
Why dotn you run for Office Sicarius? Im sure you could convince everyone of you message, just like you have done here.

Voting is participating. You dont offer any real solutions, you only whine and bitch about the system. Except for your anarchy utopia, which would not work in a world filled with people. You dont like the Republic? No reason to vote? Well, im so glad voting is bad, that makes all the struggle to obtain it look useful
Sicarius (673 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
voting is participating just like masturbating is fucking.

it's just not the same friendo.

give me any problem the candidates have to solve andI'll do it better
valoishapsburg (314 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
That's why I said you should run. You think you have all the answers, then show the rest of us.
Sicarius (673 D)
20 Oct 08 UTC
why would I participate in something I disagree with entirely?

thats like, oh wow I really dont like what the nazis are doing, I think I'll join the SS to change it form the inside
valoishapsburg (314 D)
21 Oct 08 UTC
So you just disagree with electoral politics altogether? Or are you against representatives? Or Federalism/National Governments?
What part do you disagree with? I'm not sure what part of the myriad of government powers you disagree with. Hopefully you can enlighten me, possibly on a different thread since this thread was intended to discuss the current economic situation
