ISIL using chlorine gas?
http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/10/24/iraq-isil-chlorine.html

What do you guys think? Is chlorine gas too archaic and ineffective to care about, or is the use of chlorine gas by ISIL significant/pertinent to the issue?

The London...Whats? An NFL Team for London Town?
http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/american-football/29728155 " Chancellor George Osborne says the UK government will support plans for a London-based NFL team"
For all I know, Osborne could be blowing smoke...but even if it didn't (doesn't) happen--suggestions, real or for fun, for a London NFL team name? :p

LOL! That's hilarious dude. Keep em coming.

This warmongering BS needs to stop. It's ridiculous.
+1 Putin.

How you can tell me I'm not against war while you insist Putin is allowed to invade and annex his neighbors is pretty much beyond me. You don't believe in human rights. You're the one who uses them as a cover.

How you ended up being the cheerleader of despots, I don't know. But somewhere along the line it became the most salient aspect of your opinions, and everything else has been subsumed.

So don't lecture me about equality, democracy, human rights, or peace. You love none of them. You love authority and control.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Yeah ILN I'm aware the idea of a global government makes people laugh in 2014.

This is exactly why we're doomed. But laugh it up

The North Korean government in its current form is indeed committing a sin just by existing. You might be the only non-Korean who doesn't see that

I'm totally against NK's government. But it's not my business to intervene in the matters of another country, another people.
ILN (100 D)

Besides, it won't last much longer. Change will come from the inside, and it'll be much better than by outside force.

Also, Anarchy =/= disorder. Please stop using it as a synonym for that.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
19 Oct 14 UTC
But yeah I guess allowed Assad and ISIS and Netanyahu and al Shabaab and the Ansar Dine and Vladimir Putin to invade and annex and shell unopposed is the position of all peace lovers, and daring to ask your country's military to be used against such violence is war mongering.

Think of the things you're saying in the context of police power... And tell me you aren't a fucking idiot. Should police have guns or not?

And when answering, please do appreciate nuance. The fact that police should have guns doesn't mean they should have APCs or have a right to treat the people of Ferguson the way they are. It's not black and white
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Well in Putin's mind, Ukraine *asked* for Russian intervention, so that's fine. But if rebels against autocracies *ask* for UN/NATO/USA intervention, then it's a problem.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
19 Oct 14 UTC
"I'm totally against NK's government. But it's not my business to intervene in the matters of another country, another people."

What a disgusting, truly barbaric attitude. No one is an island entire to themselves. You intervene no matter what you do: we are one people.
Putin33 (111 D)
19 Oct 14 UTC
"Anyway, look to MONUSCO or to AMISOM for a general idea of the kind of intervention I support. And before you try to come back with all the comes soldiers in those missions may have done (eg MONUSCO soldiers committing rapes), know that I am not holding them up as examples of perfection. Just examples of a concept in action."

Yes, rape and war crimes in action. These interventions have been absolute disasters in Africa in particular. Not that you give a shit because you can wear your human rights pin on your lapel.

"How you can tell me I'm not against war while you insist Putin is allowed to invade and annex his neighbors is pretty much beyond me. "

Putin didn't invade his neighbors. Let's start with you stopping with these neo-con lies. Crimea voted democratically (you supposedly love democracy, right?) to join the country they had belonged to for centuries prior to the transfer by Khrushchev that took place without ever asking the Russian people what they thought about it. But I guess Khrushchev's action was 'more democratic' than the people of Crimea deciding they no longer wanted to associated with the fascists in Kiev.

And you continue to support the slaughter of people in southeastern Ukraine, the fascist marches, the giant mass graves, etc, all because you repeat the lie that Putin has invaded anywhere. If Putin had invaded, Ukraine would be finished by now. Instead they are murdering people left and right, to your thunderous applause.

"But somewhere along the line it became the most salient aspect of your opinions, and everything else has been subsumed. "

The most salient aspect of your opinions is your gleeful support for NATO war crimes and destabilization campaigns that causes bloody unending civil wars.

"So don't lecture me about equality, democracy, human rights, or peace. You love none of them. You love authority and control."

You love violence and destruction in the name of patting yourself on the back for supposed concern for human rights. It's a completely egoistic form of politics that doesn't care about consequences.

"You might be the only non-Korean who doesn't see that"

Right, another American who thinks everybody has the same view of the world as he does.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Syria is actually a great example of why the intervention force I described really needs to exist. A non-partisan peacekeeping military is perhaps most needed when both sides of a conflict are in the wrong. ISIS vs Assad? Neutralize them both. They are tearing Syria to shreds. Neither has a right to be armed.

Putin33 (111 D)

"Well in Putin's mind, Ukraine *asked* for Russian intervention, so that's fine. "

There was no fucking interventionism. Russia by treaty had the lawful right to have troops stationed in Crimea. If Russia had intervened, Kiev would be finished. And newsflash Kuta unlike your NATO buddies, the people in eastern Ukraine are actually related to the people of Russia, and are a neighboring country with close ties.

But now NATO blames Russia for the fact that, as NATO has advanced to Kiev, Russia is on "NATO's doorstep". Fucking hilarious.

"You intervene no matter what you do: we are one people."

You haven't a clue about Korea, Korean history, or the Korean people. Spare the world the "we are all one" routine. We're only "one people" in the sense that we're all "one target" for you to bomb. Santimonious warmongering thug.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

We may be one species, but we are not one people. Some of our species want to kill others for their own gain. So, we've got tribal instincts built in for our own survival.

Now, that doesn't mean any one group should strive to be completely isolated from the others, but sometimes *cold calculations* about risk/reward must be made or you will simply bleed resources to your own detriment without any payoff at the end.

The rights and values one people hold will obviously influence their decisions, but sometimes it is not worth the effort because it is not in the national interest.

"Blood for oil" often wins out over "No blood for oil." Sad, but true. Just ask the Russians when dealing with the Caucasus region.

"the people in eastern Ukraine are actually related to the people of Russia, and are a neighboring country with close ties."

Listen up Putin. The difference between you and me is that you actually are a cheerleader for your "side." To you, Putin, Kim Jong Un, they can do no wrong. It's black and white for you. There's no nuance.

Whereas I am not particularly a fan of the West or of the American government or of the track record of the American military or of the structure of the UN.

But sometimes, I am even more disgusted by the acts of say, Assad. And so, in a gray area, I support a military that I don't really like to neutralize a military that is worse than unlikeable, because it was *plausible*. A chemical weapons norm existed, it was threatened, those who were expected to uphold appeared prepared to do so, and so I supported that.

That being said, the US government itself is illegitimate. Amazingly, you can believe both at once. I know it's hard for you to understand, given that you sewed your head onto a propaganda machine ages ago
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

"...the people in eastern Ukraine are actually related to the people of Russia, and are a neighboring country with close ties."

Yes, and?

So is it worse for the Russians to send troops to eastern Ukraine when they are advancing a separatist agenda, or for the west to send troops to assist the legitimate government of Ukraine when they asked for help against the separatists?

It does go both ways. I think most of us recognize that.
Putin33 (111 D)

You referring to the first Chechen war, when Chechen Islamists launched attacks on the rest of the region because the latter opposed independence? Or the 2nd Chechen war, when Chechnya launched a war of aggression against Dagestan?

Americans love Islamists much more than they let on. Always there to defend their every action, and any country that opposes them is demonized as the villain.

Thucydides - do you really believe the things you are saying? You cite the idea of "monopoly of violence" as a reasonable answer. Monopolies of violence have existed before - ultimately they always lead to tyranny.

I understand that you would like to settle on some pax romanum situation, what about peoples right for self-determination? You realize that the US would never have come into existence if the colonists thought the way you are thinking?

Also, who knows what North Korea would be now if not for the decades of sanctions. The fact is that the US created North Korea because at the time it was tactically much safer, and politically required. North Korea is just a dud of that conflict and it hasn't been really "touched" by any power to disarm it. And I don't mean by military intervention - I mean by including It in world politics and dropping sanctions.

"Legitimate government of Ukraine" - because apparently the violent overthrow of Yanukovich never happened and elections under force of arms never happened.

"So is it worse for the Russians to send troops to eastern Ukraine when they are advancing a separatist agenda"

They didn't "send troops", FFS.

NFL Pick 'em Week 8: Arriving at the Midway Point...
And so we come to mid-season, with the Cowboys, Chargers, Cardinals and Broncos riding high, the Saints and Bears both plummeting to earth, and a bunch of teams stuck in the middle. We kick off the week tonight with a Thursday match which should actually be good for a change, the Chargers and Broncos in a clash for the lead in the AFC West. The Lions and Falcons play in London, Bengals/Ravens, Panthers/Seahawks...pick 'em!
