Who Likes Dr. Who, *Insert Pun On The Name "Who*, and Please--Explain?
An increasing number of friends of mine--and mostly the English and Theatre Majors, damn--have come to love this show and talk about it, and when I say don't watch it, the general response is "You love Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek an absurd amount, this should be the perfect show for you!" I've watcha couple of Tennant and Smtih's shows and...well, does anyone have suggestions, or explations?

When FireFox went from 3.5 to 3.6, Plura started stealing focus from the other elements of the webdip page, so I, and others, opted out of Plura. I thought I'd check to see if it was still a problem and opted back in with no ill results so far after a few weeks.

Question for Putin33:
You're the only genuine communist I think I have ever encountered. Sure there are plenty of liberals who go "Communism! Aw....!" with big wet eyes, but very few of them are communists themselves. So my question is: what's so great about Communism?

The dictatorships in communist countries are not seeing as failure by folks like putin, they are meant to be a dictatorship of the the proletariat, or a interem system in which to prepare a people raised in a capitalist system for a communist system.

"THEN IT ISN'T FUCKING COMMUNISM ANYMORE YOU STUPID FUCKING DUMBASS."

You don't know what you're talking about. I already disproved your hysterical claim that China is "abandoning socialism as quickly as possible", by pointing out that SOEs have been strengthening and expanding and China has ruled out privatization explicitly and totally. Huge swaths of the economy have specifically designated for state control. And anyway, you and your ilk completely ignore the point I have tediously tried to explain about how the Communist-led governments are in a protracted transitional stage. Moving to the end stage requires the elimination of capitalism and classes from the face of the planet. In addition it requires productive capacity to be so great that there are conditions of overabundance. Only when production has reached such a high level that we have overabundance can the state *wither away*. Read State and Revolution. Educate yourselves. Otherwise I'm through responding to your straw man arguments

"Putin, a true communistic society is where there is really NO government--it's where the people run their own communities in which everybody has the same (or extremely close to the same) living conditions, and in which if somebody happens to get more than somebody else, they will give up what they have so that the others will be "equal" to them. This is why communism doesn't work; people are greedy and lazy in nature, as krellin has already pointed out."

I have already explained why everything you just said is false.

I repeat again:

" It is time it was understood that Marxism is an enemy of equalization. Already in the Manifesto of the Communist Party Marx and Engels scourged primitive utopian socialism and termed it reactionary because it preached "universal asceticism and social levelling in its crudest form."[127] In his Anti-Dühring Engels devoted a whole chapter to a withering criticism of the "radical equalitarian socialism" put forward by Dühring in opposition to Marxist socialism.

". . . The real content of the proletarian demand for equality," said Engels, "is the demand for the abolition of classes. Any demand for equality which goes beyond that, of necessity passes into absurdity."[128]

Lenin said the same thing:

"Engels was a thousand times right when he wrote that to conceive equality as meaning anything beyond the abolition of classes is a very stupid and absurd prejudice. Bourgeois professors have tried to make use of the concept of equality to accuse us of wanting to make all men equal

page 743

to one another. They have tried to accuse the socialists of this absurdity, which they themselves invented. But in their ignorance they did not know that the socialists -- and precisely the founders of modern scientific socialism, Marx and Engels -- said: Equality is an empty phrase unless equality is understood to mean the abolition of classes. We want to abolish classes, and in this respect we stand for equality. But the claim that we want to make all men equal to one another is an empty phrase and a stupid invention of intellectuals. . . ." (Lenin's speech "On Deceiving the People with Slogans About Liberty and Equality," Works, Vol. XXIV, pp. 293-94.)"

"By equality Marxism means, not equalization of personal requirements and everyday life, but the abolition of classes, i.e., a) the equal emancipation of all working people from exploitation after the capitalists have been overthrown and expropriated; b) the equal abolition for all of private property in the means of production after they have been converted into the property of the whole of society; c) the equal duty of all to work according to their ability, and the equal right of all working people to receive in return for this according to the work performed (socialist society); d) the equal duty of all to work according to their ability, and the equal right of all working people to receive in return for this according to their needs (communist society). Moreover, Marxism proceeds from the assumption that people's tastes and requirements are not, and cannot be, identical and equal in regard to quality or quantity, whether in the period of socialism or in the period of communism.

There you have the Marxist conception of equality.

Marxism has never recognized, and does not recognize, any other equality.

To draw from this the conclusion that socialism calls for equalization, for the levelling of the requirements of the members of society, for the levelling of their tastes and of their personal, everyday life -- that according to the Marxist plan all should wear the same clothes and eat the same dishes in the same quantity -- is to utter vulgarities and to slander Marxism."

Yes, no socialist country ever reached the highest stage - communism. For reasons I already explained - classes still exist, so long as classes exist a government needs to exist to defend the gains made by the working class from counterrevolutionaries and hostile capitalist powers. This is made very apparent by the events of 1989-1991.
In addition, productive forces have not reached the point where there are conditions of overabundance where each can take according to their needs. A state is still required to distribute goods.

I scream because anyone involved in this FALSE DEBATE is an idiot caressing the idiotic notions of a fool. Putin *admits* China is not a Communist nation while holding it up as a Communist nation. he admits defeat in his own argument. The idea that *I* am the fool because I *scream* or use all caps or *whatever*....puhhhhh-lease. The idea that you people actually indulge this fool in psuedo-intellectual, high-school debate-class style "debate" is just ludicrous. Blah blah blah....communism is a **failed** philopshy, over and over and over and over again. I love when you foold attack ME PERSONALLY, in stead of attacking my arguments. It proves you have no argument. I love when you people point to stupid things liek China and other "evolving" governments as an example of the success of Communism, when is truth, there IS NO EVOLUTION to the idea of Communism. There is not ONE SINGLE VALID ARGUMENT FOR COMMUNISM in this entire thread. Not one....because, as yet, nobody has yet produced an example of a successful pure Communist government. If they had, then it would still be in existence. What a stupid, pointless argument by all of you.

That *I* may offend you with my supposedly offensive mannerisms AT LEAST distracts you fools from wasting your time on the stupid debate over Communism. I would MUCH RATHER you all discuss and agree on how much of an asshole I am than pretend to be a bunch of fucking intellectuals debating a *clearly* failed system of government. So...pleeeease...continue to bash me. For as much of a waste of time as that is (because I think you are all dumbasses....) at least i have managed to distract you from the assinine "debate" over the validity of Communism.

For those that may agree with me but are offended by my mannerisms: Fuck you, too. I'm sick and tired of having to be "civil" when the Liberals and the Leftists in this nation and beyond feel free to insult me and those of my political persuasion. Maybe it's time you people grew a pair of balls and started speaking boldly, and calling fools "FOOLS" and calling idiots, "IDIOTS" and stop trying to pretend the debate is valid. It IS NOT. And the sooner you kids stop pretending to be intellectuals, and start living in reality, and start having to be taxed for your success, while shleps milk the fruits of your labor, the sooner we will be all better off...

God it's fun to rant on here. I can just imagine how many leftist fools I just pissed off. and it pleases me to no end. PARTICULARLY becuase I will never waste my time to read the responses...thus your rants against me are in vain...Haaaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

Loving my notoriety. BRING IT ON! Insult me some more, and increase my infamy amongst you and your fool leftist friends!

sorry Putin, I was too lazy to read everything on the first 2 and a half pages, so i missed that.

but still, the abolition of classes, and ONLY classes and nothing else, is too far fetched in the world today. true, Marxism is a great idea, but it is just too bad that it will not work because it's too utopian of an idea. I think that's all i've got to say to your political viewpoint unless I missed somthing else
I find this to be a fantastic thread and thank everyone who put thought and energy into writing the pieces to it. I wish the US political parties might have such a dialogue periodically.

This thread itself might be a great counterexample to the end-product of what communism appears to be in practice. We get to have this awkward and ranting dialogue in a relatively public space. Why is it that states dedicated to communism are threatened by the spread of ideas and seek to thwart or silence would be critics? Event the Chinese are unapologetic for a position that no oppositional views will be tolerated and carries a thinly veiled threat for conformity within it. Would it be treason to openly oppose the presented one party view? It is a parent saying to a child - this is for your own good and maybe you'll understand later. There is a sense of a little harm now for a greater good sometime in the future, but why do a few get to decide that for the many? Even for the supposed benefit of the many.

Several examples of the failure of capitalism and free market are presented - but that in some ways is the beauty of it. Even as I question the incarceration/punishment of political thinkers/writers in communist nations I realize this country (USA) has an extreme percentage of its population behind bars with an alarming disparity in minority incarceration. Yet openness to such criticism is a signature of a liberal democracy. We are ugly and we have warts. While I am bothered by extreme patriots who would spread a veneer of superiority on western values, I am similarly perplexed by . . .what's that? Kim-Jong-Il shot a 58 at Pebble Beach with three hole-in-ones and humiliated Tiger Woods? What an amazing human being, lets send more tribute in those white UN ships. (I realize North Korea is to communism what Zimbabwe is to capitalism . . . but it's hard to resist.)

@krellin

Not that I expect you to read this but how can you expect anyone to answer you? Saying that we should not debate or question is antithetical to a healthy democracy. No, there is no example of any true communist society. There has yet to be one. On a local level Cuba might come close. Is communism or capitalism or any other -ism better than the rest? We will never know. We also have never had a truly capitalist society either.

Either way, you cannot say that no one has provided evidence for anything and then dismiss it all because you refuse to read anything. I believe that is called ignorance.

Also, could you please define liberal?

and krellin, unfortunately for your arguement, there has never been a true communist government, so that means that it is not a "*clearly* failed system". but that doesn't mean it will work either, i'm just saying that since it has never existed, it never failed. Even the USSR wasn't communist--they were totalitarian socialist. something totally different from communism

@neverhurts

On your question about dissent and opposition: I'll refer to Lenin because he sums it up rather well, and his words ring true today.

"7. “Freedom of assembly” can be taken as a sample of the requisites of “pure democracy”. Every class conscience worker who has not broken with his class will readily appreciate the absurdity of promising freedom of assembly to the exploiters at a time and in a situation when the exploiters are resisting the overthrow of their rule and are fighting to retain their privileges. When the bourgeoisie were revolutionary, they did not, neither in England in 1649 nor in France in 1793, grant “freedom of assembly” to the monarchists and nobles, who summoned foreign troops and “assembled” to organize attempts at restoration. If the present day bourgeoisie, who have long since become reactionary, demand from proletariat advance guarantees of “freedom of assembly” for the exploiters, whatever the resistance offered by the capitalists to being expropriated, the workers will only laugh at their hypocrisy.

The workers know perfectly well, too, that even in the most democratic bourgeois republic “freedom of assembly” is a hollow phrase, for the rich have the best public and private buildings at their disposal, and enough leisure to assemble at meetings, which are protected by the bourgeois machine of power. The rural and urban workers and small peasants—the overwhelming majority of the population—are denied all these things. As long as that state of affairs prevails, “equality", i.e., “pure democracy", is a fraud. The first thing to do to win genuine equality and enable the working people to enjoy democracy in practice is to deprive the exploiters of all the public and sumptuous private buildings, to give to the working people leisure and to see to it that their freedom of assembly is protected by armed workers, not by heirs of the nobility or capitalist officers in command of downtrodden soldiers.

Only when that change is affected can we speak of freedom of assembly and of equality without mocking at the workers, at working people in general, at the poor. And this change can be affected only by the vanguard of the working people, the proletariat, which overthrows the exploiters, the bourgeoisie.

8. “Freedom of the press” is another of the principal slogans of “pure democracy”. And here, too, the workers know — and Socialists everywhere have explained millions of times —that this freedom is a deception because the best printing presses and the biggest stocks of paper are appropriated by the capitalists, and while capitalist rule over the press remains—a rule that is manifested throughout the whole world all the more strikingly, sharply and cynically—the more democracy and the republican system are developed, as in America for example. The first thing to do to win really equality and genuine democracy for the working people, for the workers and peasants, is to deprive capital of the possibility of hiring writers, buying publishing houses and bribing newspapers. And to do that the capitalists and exploiters have to be overthrown and their resistance oppressed. The capitalists have always use the term “freedom” to mean freedom for the rich to get richer and for the workers to starve to death. And capitalist usage, freedom of the press means freedom of the rich to bribe the press, freedom to use their wealth to shape and fabricate so-called public opinion. In this respect, too, the defenders of “pure democracy” prove to be defenders of an utterly foul and venal system that gives the rich control over the mass media. They prove to be deceivers of the people, who, with the aid of plausible, fine-sounding, but thoroughly false phrases, divert them from the concrete historical task of liberating the press from capitalist enslavement. Genuine freedom and equality will be embodied in the system which the Communists are building, and in which there will be no opportunity for massing wealth at the expense of others, no objective opportunities for putting the press under the direct or indirect power of money, and no impediments in the way of any workingman (or groups of workingman, in any numbers) for enjoying and practicing equal rights in the use of public printing presses and public stocks of paper.

9. The history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries demonstrated, even before the war, what this celebrated “pure democracy” really is under capitalism. Marxists have always maintained that the more developed, the “purer" democracy is, the more naked, acute and merciless the class struggle becomes, and the “purer” the capitalist oppression and bourgeois dictatorship. The Dreyfus case in republican France, the massacre of strikers by hired bands armed by the capitalists in the free and democratic American republic —these and thousands of similar facts illustrate the truth which the bourgeoisie are mainly seeking to conceal, namely, that actually terror and bourgeois dictatorship prevail in the most democratic of republics and are openly displayed every time the exploiters think the power of capital is being shaken."

"Throughout the civilized world we see Bolsheviks being exiled, persecuted and thrown into prison. This is the case, for example, in Switzerland, one of the freest bourgeois republics, and in America, where there has been anti-Bolshevik pogroms, etc. . From the standpoint of “democracy in general", or “pure democracy", it is really ridiculous that advanced, civilized, and democratic countries, which are armed to the teeth, should fear the presence of a few score men from backward, famine stricken and ruined Russia, which the bourgeois papers, in tens of millions of copies, described as savage, criminal, etc.. Clearly, the social situation that could produce this crying contradiction is in fact a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie."

In every country where freedom of assembly, press, etc, have been maintained and which tries to implement socialism - I think of Venezuela today, Chile in 1973, and Indonesia in 1965 - the capitalists organize for the violent overthrow of the government. More than a million Indonesians paid with their lives for the fact that "freedom of assembly" and "freedom of the press" were allowed under Sukarno. The Suharto dictatorship which followed slaughtered all the Communists.

So like Lenin said, the choice is not between liberal democracy & dictatorship - the choice is between dictatorship of the proletariat & dictatorship of the bourgeoisie.

TIDERION -- after you get out of 11th grade, come back and ask me a question. "Liberal" is fairly well defined in America. As for the rest of you idiots...sure, we have never globally seen "true/pure communism" tested....because it never can be. it is impossible. Thus, advocating it's perfection is IDIOCY. Again...you are all stupid fools. It is hillarious when those that are supporting the ideal of communism ADMIT it has never been implemented, and can never be implemented, and thus say you can't argue against it. Idiots. Fools.

Here is a thought: Grow up, get a job, start paying real taxes to pay for assholes that refuse to get a job and instead take government handouts (which are paid by YOUR taxes)...and then come talk to me. Fuck you idealistic morons that live by Mommy and Daddy's dime while you learn leftist bullshit in college. Take a real economics course, for god's sake...

Wait, what? Krellin is an adult? I can imagine him walking into work:

"FUCK ALL YOU MORONS YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. STOP CARESSING YOUR IDIOTIC NOTIONS OF STUPIDITY. I DIDN'T READ THE MEMO BECAUSE I NEVER BOTHER TO READ YOUR STUPID WASTE OF TIME IDIOTIC MEMOS. ALL YOU PEOPLE DO IS INSULT ME INSTEAD OF LISTEN TO MY ARTICULATE ARGUMENTS. IDIOT FOOL MORON FOOL FOOL MORON IDIOTS."

There, I gave you the attention you so crave. Troll.

krellin (80 DX)
30 Apr 11 UTC
Ahhhhh ha ha ha! Krellin - first of all, as a good Communist, you would never walk in to work and say ANYTHING of a personal nature, fool. Second...and MOST important - you have NOT YET GIVEN AN EXAMPLE OF A SUCCESSFUL COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT, YOU STUPID ASSHOLE.

You can TRY to insult me because I used ALL CAPS (which, incidentally, has ****TOTALLY**** performed as intended and attracted your pea-brain to what I have to say....you are SO FUCKING EASY to manipulate, idiot)....but, AFTER I have attracted your attention, you STILL 100% FAIL TO ANSWER ME. You CAN NOT GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A SUCCESSFUL COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT. You CAN NOT given an example of where a depraved society of human beings can put aside their greed for the common good without some "superior class" suppressing a working class. YOU COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY FAIL TO SUPPORT YOUR ARGUMENT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND VOER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN...

Because you have NO realistic argument. The only thing you have is a bunch of stupid idealistic lap-dog leftist college students and government employees that support you because they have never done a full days worth of work, never really participated in an economy, etc, etc, etc. I ***LOVE*** that you can ONLY resort to calling me a troll....It is the TRUTH behind the lie: You HAVE NO DEFENSE, you repugnant asshole. You can not refute my arguments, so you simply and only resort to name calling.

*I*, on the other hand DO FREQUENTLY refute your arguments. BECAUSE I refute your arguments, I DO call you names. My names are not abusive...but they are simply effective labels. You are an idiot and a fool. It is not cruel...it simply is the truth.

Grow up and find a real philosophy to pray to, you feckless moron.
krellin (80 DX)
30 Apr 11 UTC
Putin - insulting me because I don't read what you write. Puh-lease...I respond to your specifics ALL THE TIME. I point out that you never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever provide a real life example of the success of your philosophy of government.

Thus, I call you a dumbass and a fool, and I challenge you to provide an example.

YOU respond with UNEQUAL parodies.....that demonstrate your inability to comprehend the actual insult to your idea, and fail to parallel the insult.

You, in short, and a mental midget. You wouldn't know a logical argument if a bank teller handed you a cool, easy fin...

Moron....

You want an example of successful socialism in practice. Unfortunately due to the pressures exerted by the right leaning Isreali government most of the Kibbutz's have been forced into the capitalist fold.

However the Kibbutz is a perfect example of socialism done right on the level of a commune. They would by boats or cars for the community, have a joint collection of clothes, and due to having a more traditional Jewish bent people worked hard and contributed.

I'll link you the wikipedia article on them just to get you started. If your interested in more info I'll see if I can't dig up the video series I watched about them.

On a side note, krellin you're a prat.

I gave him numerous examples and explained why he's wrong numerous times. He will simply say "real communism" is the anarchic utopian ascetic super-egalitarian commune he invented up in his head, even though I quoted numerous times from Marx, Lenin, and others that this isn't at all what occurs and is a caricature invented by opponents of socialism.

The day Krellin even has a 10 year old's understanding of the dictatorship of the proletariat and the difference between the first stage of communism and the conditions necessary for the second stage is the day I discover Jesus Christ as my personal savior.

It's rather annoying that while anti-communists demand leftists read and understand the work of their ideological influences, anti-communists so absolutely no interest and give no effort in getting a handle on the basics of Marxism.

Debating lesson nunber 1: if you get personal in an argument (insults etc,) it is a sign that you consider your case is so weak that you can no longer defend it in rational ways.
Based on the way the capitalosts are conducting this debate I can only come to the conclusion that capitalism is dead. I doubt that communism will replace it because the class system is broken: witness the royal wedding yesterday where a nobody married a so-called prince. What will replace it?
