Indy's Clever Pet Tricks To Win Games List (Please Contribute)
1. Find the players that CD most frequently, set up a game, and invite them! In a game chosen at random (truly), these were the percentages I found for the 7 players: 17%, 20%, 10%, 2%, 43%, 0%, and 29%. Truly! Just imagine if you could find 6 players with 50% rates!

Summer Gunboat Tournament: Interest Thread
I've been talking to trip about organising a summer season of his gunboat tournament. Before I get serious about it, I want to gain some feedback from participants of the just-finished tournament and also make sure there is enough interest to field it at all.

SC2 means a scoring system where you get points proportional to the supply centre count squared

GFDT is a tournament.

WTA is winner takes all

PPSC is Points Per supply centre

Ghost & Figle have offered to allow us to use power choice country placement. My thoughts on this are that we can make sure no player gets the same country per each step-round. It means more legwork, but I'm willing to do it as I think it makes the games a lot more even. Anyone have a reason why we should leave it up to pure chance rather than try to force evener odds?

Also, there's definitely talk of a prize reward. If we end up with 35 players and we do a 3 round process. (3 games, top 14 advance, 3 more games, top 7 advance, 3 final games) we're looking at up to 420 (d) in prize points. Each finalist will have put up 45 (d), how should the prize be split, if split at all?

We're just under one month until the proposed start of the tournament. Plenty of time for YOU, the participant, to have your opinions heard and considered. Make this YOUR gunboat tournament!
I feel like I'm way too excited for this tournament. Like... it's verging on pathetic.
The only suggestion I have that I didn't remember to post earlier is that I would prefer the games to all be anonymous.

Yep, all games will be anonymous!

geo, when you say about what countries people would get and weather or not they should be able to have the some ones again, how would you control that? can mods some how make sure that certain people would get a certain country or something?
IKE (3845 D)

@Doc, what's up Doc? Kidding, meaning no one get the same country 3 times in 1 round. Mods can check this, but that's it. It would be wrong for slmeone to draw any one country 3 times in a row. Yes, it has happened, ask Ivo in last years premier league games who drew Turkey 3 times in 3 games.
Geofram (130 D(B))

Yes, from what I understand, a moderator can force a game into any configuration they'd like. A simple algorithm that "randomed" assignments (after the first) based on no repetitions would make this a easy hands-off procedure. When we get a final list I'll set it up.
DoctorJingles (212 D)

ok, i had no clue that they had the power to do that

do you have a selected date for this to start?
Geofram (130 D(B))
10 Apr 11 UTC
Signups will close Saturday April 30th. By Sunday May 1st I'll have a roster. We're going to accept as many groups of seven as we can, if we end up having odd players, we'll have to disappoint some people unless/until there's a dropout. Not sure what to rank on, likely just games played rather than GR.

So announcement May 1st, all first games will be started that week for sure. It'll likely be something how the leagues work, if everyone is willing to use email. I'm not sure how to organise game starts without email unless we can just get mods to put people in a game!
Geofram (130 D(B))

So we'll say that everyone has to be in their first game by Saturday May 7th.

Shouldn't you be collecting our e-mails?
Geofram (130 D(B))
11 Apr 11 UTC
Now that we've got a date and enough interest to definitely make it happen, there's only a few more things to clear up before I make the official "SIGN UP HERE /w EMAIL" thread. Obviously all those here have already thrown their name on the list, I'd just prefer to have a separate, discussion-less thread for sign-ups.

It turns out we actually have a full 840 D to award (more if there's more than 35 players.) I'd like to decide how they're split up before we start the tournament. Any suggestions? My thoughts were: 490 first, 250 second, and 100 third, but there might be something better.

I would like to sign up for this tournament if there is still space.
I am available to commence whenever.
Geofram (130 D(B))

We haven't quite reached 35 yet, so there should definitely be room for a few more. I've got some work related stuff to juggle around, but expect an offical counting e-mail sign-up thread sometime Wednesday/Thursday.

it would be good to decide or have an idea about the value of buy-in for each game.
Some people might want to spare some points to be able to join games when the tournament starts.
IKE (3845 D)

Where is 840 D coming from? Kestas gave 630 D for the last tourney.
Geofram (130 D(B))

35 player tournament:
(3 games, top 14 advance, 3 more games, top 7 advance, 3 final games)

5 groups * 3 games * 7 players * 5 D + 2 * 3 * 7 * 5 + 3 * 7 * 5 = 840 D to award.
Geofram (130 D(B))
11 Apr 11 UTC
The most anyone can spend in the tournament (again, assuming 35 players) is 45 D.

democ, as "skill" in diplomacy is a very subjective thing to judge, there is requirement of any sort to join the tournament other than a will to complete all the games if you join.
I do suggest that you fully understand the rules of troop movements, supports, etc, but other than that, its all tactical.

so what's the cup policy about summer pauses?
Geofram (130 D(B))
13 Apr 11 UTC
In answer to hellalt's question about pauses over the tournament, how should we handle it?

I'm inclined to give pauses for 7-or-less days if they are known WELL in advance. But only once. If you're taking two vacations you'll have to find a sitter for one, and if you're taking more than that it might not be a good idea for you to participate.

Emergencies are a different story, but we'll deal with those on a case by case basis with hopes of not having to pause any groups. Pauses are not great for the tournament.

What about seeding? Tro should be #1 no matter you do it. Gr or games played whatever.

Convoy Error message
I receive the following message when trying to convoy an army from Armenia to Sev. Parameter 'viaConvoy' set to invalid value 'Yes'.
Is this a common error? The move is surely legal.
This is an anonymous game, so I am reluctant to post the game ID.

Suggestion- buying points
This seems like a good idea to me. I've only 2 D left, but if we could buy points(to a set limit), this has a 2 pronged benefit.
It allows me to play more games(or higher pot games) and gives money to those developing the site.
Thoughts?
