Korean artillery bombardment
Why would they do that? Will it blow over or escalate?

I don't see it escalating but it is always a worry. The stakes are high.

"But it's always easy to portray one country as "insane" rather than intelligently consider the facts."

In most cases, I would agree with you. However, the North Korean government is absolutely bat-shit crazy.
No but countries are not cops. A leader a hundred miles away better be sure of the situation before giving an order to commence hostilities wiht a neighbor. The fact remains the South Koreans were doing what they said they's do and the North over reacted with tragic results.
Putin33 (111 D)

" I'd be calling for a diplomatic resolution to the situation."

Right, peace, non-violence and all that.
"Right, peace, non-violence and all that."

Absolutely and you've seen nothing from any of my posts that should reliably make you think otherwise. Have you, now?

I am most definitely for a peaceful resolution of any situation.

"The fact remains the South Koreans were doing what they said they's do and the North over reacted with tragic results"

And North Korea did what they said they'd do. But somehow that's different.

"A leader a hundred miles away better be sure of the situation before giving an order to commence hostilities wiht a neighbor."

RoK repeatedly gets the "situation" wrong, yet commences hostilities with the North.
It's a clear double standard here.

"Have you, now?"

Except glorifying the Hungarian anti-Jewish lynchings and other riots. No.
"In most cases, I would agree with you. However, the North Korean government is absolutely bat-shit crazy."

Ouch! That one made my beer come through me nose! ROFL

" is absolutely bat-shit crazy"

Cheap, unsubstantiated rhetoric. We heard the same nonsense about Saddam Hussein and every other demon du jour.
Invictus (240 D)

Why are you so supportive of North Korea, Putin33? Here we have the most unambiguous pariah state in the world, which enslaves its own people and openly spurns international law, and all you can do is rush to defend them and assume the most evil of intentions on the part of the South Koreans. Why?

I seriously want to know. Even China only defends the North because of cynical strategic interests.
Bezborodov (775 D)
25 Nov 10 UTC
I'm with Putin on this one. The south should stop being so provocative. What do they need slaves for anyway?
Glorifying? You mean when you made the feeble attempt to tie the Hungarian revolt to fascism using one dead guy, one dying guy, a defunct political party, two exiles, and two nobodys?

Not to mention that all I said was people do revolt against communist governments and said governments do put them down rather harshly. That in response to the ludicrous assumption that you persious communists had any say in the matter when they "peacefully stepped down" in 1989-91.

Yes I'm sure that makes me ravening and violent. ;-)
Bezborodov (775 D)

I think that China and the U.S. would probably want to maintain the status quo since China will probably never oust U.S. influence from the Korean peninsula any time soon (not without force anyway).

@Putin

NK abducts traveling civilians before they even officially enter NC.
They refuse to address to terrible poverty within the country and even steals aid from the poor population to enjoy for themselves.
They are conducting a very dangerous Nuclear program that is clearly meant for weapons.
They refuse to enter into negotiations.
They needlessly provoke SK with these mindless attacks.
Invictus (240 D)
25 Nov 10 UTC
To be fair, North Korea is crazy like a fox. They create these crises so America and South Korea are forced into caving on their demands for aid, since they make it appear as if they really could restart the war or at least make things much more unstable if they don't get what they want.
Bezborodov (775 D)
25 Nov 10 UTC
Plus, NK is a headache for the U.S., so why not keep them around?

good beer though.

Yet Saddam Hussein was absolutely bat-shit crazy (growing quite fond of that term thanks abgemacht).

This is a pack of nonsense.

Anybody who argues facts instead of RoK lies and propaganda is said to "love" North Korea. It is people like you who went ahead and spouted off the US line on Iraqi WMDs which led us into a war based on a pack of lies. And then you sit here and act like it's shocking that anything the west and the RoK says might be untrue.

How many times must the RoK lie before people stop taking their line seriously? They can do no wrong.

North Korea doesn't "refuse" to enter negotiations. NK has repeatedly said it wants normal diplomatic relations with the US and a non-aggression treaty. Who refuses? The US. Who refused face-to-face talks with the DPRK from 2001-2008? The Bush administration. Who lied about the DPRK "cheating" in 2002? The Bush administration. Who didn't comply with Treaty signed in 1994 about nuclear reactors? The Clinton and Bush administrations. Who flattened whose cities? The US dropped the equivalent number of bombs on North Korea that it dropped on Japan. They turned Pyongyang into a sea of fire.

To pretend like North Korea is the aggressor here is absurd.

By treaty I mean Agreed Framework.
"Google warrior needs to read up on the '56 uprising."

Google Warrior? I lIke that.

Any way I have and oddly enough almost nothing you say about it holds true. I mean we agree that there was an uprising and that it happened in Hungary in '56 and all, but that's where you get hazy on the facts

People having roles in it ten to twenty years after their deaths and other odd little tidbits. I'd imagine you really don't want me to do any more reading on the subject ;-)
Jack_Klein (897 D)

Wait a second.

NK was the aggressor in the Korean War. The North invaded the South, and we backed them up.

Its not like we just decided offhand to pulverize the North for no damn reason.

The level of historical revisionism in your posts is getting to the absurd level.

Being an American who is strongly against my nations militaristic tendencies my first thought wasn't "Oh, it looks like they're gonna have a war" instead it was "Fuck, I'm probably gonna get drafted into that shitstorm"
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
25 Nov 10 UTC
The chances of draft being reinstated are astronomically low.
Yeah I wouldn't worry too much about that one. If we weren't drafting people to go to Iraq or Afghanistan, I doubt we'd do so for Korean even if we got involved militarily (which isn't likely).
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
25 Nov 10 UTC
Although, I will say I'm pretty pissed I had to register for the draft just because I'm a man. Utter Bullshit.

Jack Klein +1

How anyone can defend the North Korean government--a dictatorship with no respect for human rights and freedoms, and completely indifferent to the millions of its people who starve or grow up malnourished as long as it remains in power--is beyond me.

Additionally, how anyone can look at a situation where South Korea fired *into the sea,* *away from North Korea,* *with North Korea warned in advance,* and say that North Korea is justified in responding by firing *at an island with South Korean soldiers and civilians on it, killing several of them, causing widespread devastation, and forcing the island's evacuation,* is beyond me.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

lmao... putin... skorea has nothing to gain by escalating things with nkorea. if anyone has a conspiracy going on to make this thing look like its someone else's fault, its nk.

except no one buys their horseshit anyway, except, apparently, scagga and you. who knew propaganda worked so brilliantly

have you ever seen those "taken from space at night" pictures of the korean peninsula? it's shocking... it's like.... damn.... sucks to be north korean.

Request a MOD for game cancellation
Perhaps I do not fully understand the rules concerning when a game starts, but I was under the impression that once all players joined a game, it would start soon. However, gameID=42381 has had all 7 players for the past several hours, and as it is getting pretty late, I imagine that many players, myself included, will not be able to enter orders. Therefore, can I request that a mod cancel this game?
