Monetization via distributed processing ?
After the trial a week ago distributed processing seems to be a potentially effective way to monetize the site without irritating ads or premium accounts. It's not as lucrative, but it is better and more consistent than donations, and it would still provide an incentive for me to work on the more mundane coding which I'm otherwise not interested in

I think most people would gladly trade some (otherwise unused) CPU usage while playing to see further development on the site (and perhaps leave their browsers open as an alternative to direct donation).
But I'd like to hear from those who experienced crashes a week ago, it was the only negative aspect of the trial and it seemed to only be a small subset of Firefox 3.0.1 users, so hopefully it can be resolved and I can go ahead with it

I've updated Firefox and Java. Let's see what happens.

It may actually end up not being an issue directly with what version of Firefox or Java people are using, it could be a conflict with plugins/add on's in FF. So in addition to the version of FF and Java people are using, I'd suggest they also post any extensions they're running, there may be a specific extension that's causing a problem.

Also has anyone tried this on Safari or any other Webkit based browser? I haven't had a chance to try the Mac version of Safari yet at home (no internet access at home at the moment as our house is being painted, so everything is unplugged and in the center of the various rooms), and don't have the Windows version installed here at work.
DrOct (219 D(B))

Hmmm... Just realized that someone earlier did mention everything working in Chrome, so that's a good sign for Webkit working I suppose.

I think this is a great idea personally.

To clarify, in my case it doesn't crash just firefox, it freezes my entire computer. When I returned to check for any responses in this thread last night, my entire pc just locked up completely - ctrl-alt-delete etc wouldn't even work. That's on a Dual-core Vista machine I have. I think you've disabled it (can't tell), but this is working fine on WinXP running IE
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
23 Oct 08 UTC
mapleleaf: I've added you to the opt-out list so trying it out here won't work, you should try it out at this demo site: http://pluraprocessing.com/demo.html

fig; What version of Java etc are you using :-P what addons, etc.
I have a hunch that if everyone who experienced crashes would just post their version information a clear pattern would appear and I could disable the applet for the subset of users which experience problems.

No bugs to report, but I also have noticed significant lag since implementation. I can *deal* with it, but it is something that is evident

The plura demo site also crashes firefox for me. I have the following plugins:
Adobe Acrobat
Java SE 6 U6
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124
Silverlight 2.0.31005.0
Windows Genuine Advatage 1.7.0069.3

No thank you, *blocked*
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
25 Oct 08 UTC
Thanks dangermouse, hopefully a pattern will emerge and we'll see whats going on :-)

Thanks again to everyone running the applet, especially to anyone who keeps their browser open longer than they normally would to support the site extra.
I don't want to count my chickens before they're hatched but it looks like this'll let this site be self-sufficient and pay for its own hosting, which is a much better situation for me as a uni student

To all those who blocked the applet, go to hell (just kidding ;-)
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
25 Oct 08 UTC
dangermouse: Can you try moving to update 10 and see if you still get the crashes? You should be able to get it at java.com

Turns out I'm using U7 by the way
Churchill (2280 D)

So you know, I'm running Safari 3.1.2 and I haven't had any problems. This said, I'm not confident that the applet is actually running as I'm at 2-8% processing usage.
aoe3rules (949 D)

So, how much money have you earned so far?
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
25 Oct 08 UTC
aoe3rules: Not much (I'm from England where we find questions like this awkwardly blunt) but at the current rate it'll match the money from donations within a couple of weeks and put the site back in the black (including the upcoming hosting fees) within a couple of months, and give me a reason to work on the technically boring jobs&features which need to be done on a semi-regular basis
But I'll be more comfortable when I know Plura aren't a sham company

Churchill; you probably don't have Java installed in that case, it'd be using ~70% CPU otherwise

By the way phpdip.net and Facebook phpdip on 70% are equivalent to a cluster of ~50 PCs at 100% running 24/7, pretty neat I think
Chrispminis (916 D)

Facebook dip is also running this?
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

Yep, I didn't think it would work but I was pleased to find it was just a matter of changing "iframe" to "fb:iframe"
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

sean (3490 D(B))
27 Oct 08 UTC
kestas, does it use a fixed rate of our cpu ability? or it takes a percentage of whatever our cpu is capable of doing? i have a one year old pc, running pent e6600 quad and it isnt approaching 70% at all, maybe 5-10% i think.
flashman (2274 D(G))
27 Oct 08 UTC
Sorry to ask this but is this application running now? I am lost in the discussion.

I mentioned above that I have serious security issues and would like to know if my machine is or is not being accessed.

I would also ask how those who play from work (free time!) can avoid these issues?
Treefarn (6094 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
Ugh. I never thought of that. If I pull up this site at work, are you using my offices computers to run code? My network guys may come knocking at my door. (Like i have a door).
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
27 Oct 08 UTC
sean; it takes an average of all computers when deciding how long something should take, but that shouldn't matter since it should remain at a pretty much constant 70%. If you're keen to help out perhaps double-check you have Java installed

flashman; it is currently implemented, yup. It's sandboxed inside of a java applet though, you have no more reason to be worried about that code accessing your files than the javascript I wrote accessing your files, neither can reach outside of its sandbox

Treefarn; technically yes but it uses very little bandwidth and only idle CPU time. If you can get away with using phpdiplomacy your network admins won't notice a Java applet running ;-)
(However I think I opted you out since you had FF crashes anyway)
Treefarn (6094 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
I wasn't sure if you opted out by user or by IP.
flashman (2274 D(G))
27 Oct 08 UTC
Thanks K, but I would still prefer to opt out. I have had very serious security issues in the past. I am more than willing to donate - I just need a way to do so without Paypal...
dangermouse (5551 D)
28 Oct 08 UTC
It looks like upgrading Java has fixed the issue. You can opt me in for plura.

Why was Good Times-2 drawn?
Not all of the players voted for a draw, and now I have received less points than I paid to buy-into the game.
Could a Moderator/Administrator explain and possibly rectify the situation?

Massive NMR's in -01 why do you punish yourselves this way?
I just looked at the open games and found two that stand out with 3 or 4 countries that did not move in 1901. Why are you all remaining people playing these games? Call for a draw and end the misery. It is not Diplomacy if you do not have 7 active players.

Rules Download
New to the game and the site... where do I download a complete set of rules? The obvious ones I get, but the more remote ones I'm having trouble with. For instance, if I make an attack out of a country, can an army retreat into it from if dislodged out of another area (not where the attack is directed)? Is my support to a third country cut when the army attacking me is dislodged?

I took over a cd in game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6148 only to find that all the other players had voted for a draw in a paused game. What are our options now? If I allow the game to be drawn, what is my return on my investment in points? Might I be permitted to be removed from the game, as if I had never joined, so that I do not take a "draw"?

Cheaters
In a recently initiated game (Good times-2), 5 accounts were made and joined a 100 point game all together and all within one hour of each other. Additionally, they all submitted and finalized orders within this same hour and all appear to be working toward the two countries not controlled by the suspected owner of the 5. If you look at england's opening in particular, the move to Clyde seems odd.

This is just a quick notice that I'm planning on killing my yahoo mail account. This means that I would like to open a new account on this site using a different email/password.
