Borderline Movies
List films you're not sure if they land on the happy side of par...or just barely fail...or just hit the line...Mine's "Bladerunner"--I STILL can't tell if that's the best bad movie or worst good movie I've ever seen...it has some of the best stylistic and atmospheric elements of any even partially-action film I've seen...but even with the PDK book's ideas and the VK test...so DULL, and plodding, with a plot heavier on conceptualization than payoff, until the very, very end...I dunno.

GATTACA was a future-tense docudrama.
"We were appalled when we found out," says Brown, who's a registered nurse. "Why do they need to store my baby's DNA indefinitely? Something on there could affect her ability to get a job later on, or get health insurance."

Acronym Assistance
Hey there are a bunch of acronyms used on this forum about the game that I haven't been able to figure out. I did a search and couldn't find them anywhere. Does anyone have a list?

I love mute thread!
Since I have been gone for 2 years, many things have changed. The thing that I LOVE is the option to mute threads. Not that everything the people on this site say isn't fascinating, but it sure helps me clean up things and get to the threads that I am really interested in. Whoever came up with this idea...+1.

I don't like gunboats
I'm playing my first GB game and I don't like it. I don't like not being able to congratulate my ally on a good move. I don't like not being able to duck with my enemy. I don't like seeing a briliant move that requires cooperation and not being able to tell my potential cooperator about it, so that he doesn't bounce me. I do not like it Sam I Am, I do not like GB and ham.

Best browser for webdip on Macs
I am running OSX Lion on several macs in my house and continuously drop connection to the web dip server. I go to refresh a page or move to another and I just watch the pinwheel spin and eventually tell me that Google Chrome cannot connect to the server. I have tried both Safari and Firefox with no better results. Is this a browser problem, or do I have to change some settings? Should I change browsers? Help!

Letters of Marque and Reprisal - Modern American usage?
Article 1 Section 8 of the US Constitution gives Congress the power to issue letters of marque and reprisal. Do Advertisements Reflect or Influence the Culture?
Advertisements (commercialized propaganda) are often criticized for portraying things in certain ways. The first thing that comes to my mind are cigarette ads. But shouldn't a financially aware institution conform to the cultural mindset in order to maximize profit? Could it be that everyone in the United States is a hypocrite?

Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Parry?
It seems that many people here have ideas that lean toward Communism. (Not me--for the record I am a strong free market Capitalist.). So is any one here willing to admit that they are Communists?

Evil is definitely a harsh descriptor for socialism. The totalitarian aspects of communism tend to verge on evil, but general socialist principles are meant to protect the people of a nation when individual motivations would otherwise negatively impact the whole if not regulated. It's hard to call that "evil" unless you can identify every single socialist government practice and debunk it as too much of a hindrance to the portion of the population negatively impacted by the practice. Many try to do just that, but often have to stretch for the socialist ideas that are the most reasonable and just. You wouldn't call a minimum wage evil, would you?
hecks (164 D)
07 Feb 13 UTC
In fairness to Gunfighter, he never said socialism was evil. He said that Communism is evil and that he vehemently opposes that and socialism. It's possible that he also thinks socialism is evil, but he hasn't said so... yet.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))

I did see that, but I feel his comment still is overtly negative towards socialist ideology, and I'm definitely interested in his reasoning.

With communism, I believe that *no* government, even a democratically-elected one, has the right to exert that much control over peoples' lives, especially for the objective of evenly distributing the nations' resources for the benefit of few and at the expense of many. An objective, I may add, whose success is completely dependent on a society completely free of corruption. The practical application of communism almost always Draconian in nature and involves the forfeiture of individual rights that should never be forfeited under any circumstances, such as the freedom of speech, religion, and the right to bear arms.

These factors lead me to conclude communism = evil.

My argument against socialism reaches a similar conclusion but is more heavily based on American law, history, and culture. I will omit such an argument from this discussion because this is not an America-specific thread.

History and culture definitely are important, and a number of socialist policies that work in Europe and elsewhere wouldn't work nearly as well in America. So I think we actually agree here more than I thought initially.
damian (675 D)

I lean, pretty far left.

But, I'm not a communist. So in answer to the initial question, no.

Notice I left out laws. I think people in America put too much importance on sticking with old laws and rules that don't work just for the sake of perpetuating those bad laws to the next generation, and inadvertently punishing them in the process because of moral hazard; most of the horrible effects of some laws 20 years down the road will not be witnessed by the people perpetuating the laws in government, so the politicians don't give a shit about keeping them on the books.

Sorry for the run-on. Too lazy to fix :/

"with communism, I believe that *no* government…has the right to exert that much control over peoples'(sic!) lives" - I guess, at least Marx would agree with you here (too lazy to quote it, but nicely pointed out in the "18. Brumaire". Also, for the ones who slightly ignore the political discourse in Eastern Europe: "Communism is Socialism + Electricity" - as we all know, they had significant shortages on this one and hence self-described them only as "socialist" or "real-existing socialism" that was yet to reach communism.

In Marx phrases, communism was characterised by the joint ownership on means of production by everyone AND by necessity of capitalist development would emerge sooner or later from this system. Well, considering who are the so-called institutional investors in means of production (mostly pension funds), the road to communism lays bare before us.

Revolution and political action was mostly meant to speed up the process and lift the immediate plight of the working class. In general, communism is a theoretical descriptor for a certain form of production aka economy.

Where I can't follow though, is where the right to bear arms enters the debate?
hecks (164 D)
08 Feb 13 UTC
When you're talking to a guy named "Gunfighter" are you surprised the right to bear arms *always* enters the debate? I think he even brought it up in the Super Bowl thread.

The fact that the government kills priets, political dissenters, and "undesirables", steals all of your money in taxes, and controls every aspect of your life.

If you like Communism, then move to North Korea.

which government didn't? Or rather, there is a majority of non-socialist governments committing the same crimes. It's not an ideology thing, it is a polity thing.
