A Greeting
It seems that we all compete against each other yet know so little about each other outside of WebDiplomacy. In this thread, we'll all state something interesting about ourselves.

For me, I collect coins.

Bobby Fischer on chess
"[Capablanca] wanted to change the rules already, back in the twenties, because he said chess was getting played out. He was right. Now chess is completely dead. It is all just memorization and prearrangement. It’s a terrible game now. Very uncreative." from a radio interview, 2006

Thoughts?

****London Olympics 2012****
Brilliant ...... 30 minutes to go before the opening ceremony and the heavens have opened. It wouldn't be England without rain :-)

The ceremony was quite clever and epic, in the way of how it worked, eg. the huge chimneys coming out of the ground... But it was odd...

What you must remember, Dom, is that the British are perfectly normal. It's the other 7 billion people out there who are the odd balls.

Speaking of odd, sailing is bloody weird. Great fun to watch, but bloody weird.

Time to celebrate, the most prolific Olympic medal winner ever, not necessarily the best Olympian
Putin33 (111 D)

I hope the UK's 4th place finish was worth the 10 billion price tag. I guess gold medals and velodromes are more important than employment and social services.

Octavious (2701 D)

Yeah, it's all about the golds. When you consider that almost any athlete would trade a dozen silver for a single gold it is easy to see why. Not to mention that different sports handle the lesser medals differently, with boxing giving bronzes to third and forth for example, and there being an opportunity for a single nation to win gold, silver and bronze in the 100m, but only one medal per nation in football or track cycling events.

I think only north America does the bizarre total medal count in terms of deciding position.

Medals per capita is rather neat: http://www.medalspercapita.com/
Another winner there.

Except per capital allows for Puerto Rico and Hong Kong to be counted as countries when they are not
Putin33 (111 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
It's also rather neat than virtually the entire world can't afford a velodrome, so how many countries are actually competing in these events that the UK is competing in and getting their golds. Last count I saw the UK won 7 golds in 'track cycling'.
fulhamish (4134 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
Yes, let's do the calculation on per capita wealth, what a good idea.
Better yet let's do it on medals won while sitting down (only joking).
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))
12 Aug 12 UTC
Putin you're so right, I won't ride my bike nowadays unless it's in a velodrome ..... in fact the UK is covered in velodromes, it's the only way to cycle :-)
Putin33 (111 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
Oh wow, you dominated a sport in which 8 countries can afford to compete and happens to award 10 medals. Congrats.

Seems like all the British scoffing at the Canadians for their 'own the podium' routine in Vancouver is retrospectively ironic.
fulhamish (4134 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
Yeah didn't that Wiggins chap go round and round in a Velodrome, I am getting confused now.
Putin33 (111 D)

Really, you don't think those super strong, super light weight track cycling bikes are expensive. The delusions here are hilarious.

I never quite get why there is such a disproportionate amount of swimming events, and also why the Russians are so shit at all of them, is there no water in Russia?
Putin33 (111 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
I guess Fulham's "skeptic" routine goes out the window when it comes to the national honor of the motherland. We've always known this, but it gets a bit much.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))
12 Aug 12 UTC
Oh no, Russia used to be great at loads of events, until they tightened up the drug testing :-)
Putin33 (111 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
Really, they just won the synchronized swimming gold. I guess that water is fake.
Putin33 (111 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
"until they tightened up the drug testing :-)"

ROFL, this coming from a nation that specializes in the most steroid infested sport on earth. How long before we learn that your cycling team was more juiced up than Lance Armstrong?
Octavious (2701 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
And yet the US that could afford scores of velodromes and has plenty of them does so badly. Your argument doesn't wash, Putin. We have no snowy mountains to speak of and always do badly in the winter games because of it, but to complain about it misses the whole point of the Olympics. You do what can do, and their are enough sports that every nation can excel at something.

The IOC even go to the trouble of making twice as many swimming medals as there really should be so the yanks can maintain their illusion of dominance. Everybody has the chance to win!

You mean that some countries have an advantage over others because of their training facilities, equipment etc....Wow, what an insight. Maybe that only now applies to GB in your eyes, not like the good old days of the USSR eh?

Putin33 (111 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
Last I checked it didn't cost 150 million to build an olympic swimming pool. I don't get your comeback here. The UK can happily compete in swimming, few countries bother competing in track cycling, which I thought was the same logic for why those American puppets, the IOC, canceled sports like women's softball. Of course you still had men's field hockey, which nobody plays in the US.
Putin33 (111 D)

"Wow, what an insight. Maybe that only now applies to GB in your eyes, not like the good old days of the USSR eh?"

International Power
It's no secret that Mitt Romney and the Republican party (for ages) has tried to establish its international power through hardnosed delegation, but is that even necessary?

Live world game
Would anyone on the site be interested in playing a live game of world diplomacy? Ive never been in a live version of the variant but I think it would be very exciting and much better than an average live game, I understand it could probably take a lot longer to play than usual live games to but just want to see if members of the site are up for playing one?
