Fools Rush In: Game 67704
Is this the highest stakes game played? Pot of 7000 D. I notice three players have voted to draw already, how disappointing. This is one game I would like to see played to the death.

Who is your money on?

Cheating in WebDiplomacy
I have sent a message to the game mods about a no ingame messaging World XI game Im in days ago without reply - and I think its a clear case of either A) metagaming or B) Multi-account because the level of co-op without any supposed comms is unbelievable.

So far nothing at all from the mods - not even an acknowledgement of the mail - what should I do?

I don't know if anyone is interested in studying or analyzing things like that, but I am. When I was first starting to play diplomacy (back in, oh, February?), I immersed myself in reading all about the strategies and theories that people had written articles on. Since discovering this site (back in, oh, last week?) I've really come to enjoy the Ancient Med variant.

The world can certainly function without the United States.
The United States isolated itself from Asia and Europe from 1919-1940 and look what happened.
The Japanese militarists carried out a genocide in China while Europe produced the four horseman of the apocalypse Stalin-Hitler-Mussolini-Franco in that period.

Quite a testament to the brilliance of Europe and Asia.

I like NY, for the record. I found it kind of ironic that when I was there people somehow recognized me as "latino" and talked to me in Spanish.

You know, down here in the South we use to play with this US-America ambivalence by displacing Monroe's doctrine and saying "America for the [Latin] Americans". Or, in good Spanish, "Gringolándia un día será nuestra". :-)

I also love the way the historically ignorant discuss America as if it as monolithic as Europe. The American of the Civil War was vastly different from the America of WWI and WWII because of the historically unmatched immigration to the United States in that period.
Along the same vein the United States of the 21st century is not the United States of WWII because of the Immigration Act of 1965 that dramatically changed the ethnic mixture of the American pie, and for the better on both occasions I might add.

So to discuss American actions pre-Civil War as congruent with those of the Post WWII world just exposes the author's utter ignorance of history.

I do agree with your point TC that the US is not the same today as it was years ago. Also Texas is a bit different than say, Vermont! Sweeping generalizations about the US do not hold ground to these realities. Nonetheless people who are anti-american do not see these and it doesn't really help in understanding why they feel that way, may they be right or wrong to feel it is another question. I don't think anti-americans feel this way out of stupidity though!

@TC

You know, I began this paragraph dispelling all of your misinformation and misconceptions about the Pax-Americana as you call it. Then I stopped. To argue with you would be similar to arguing with a wall. No matter how many facts are presented or good points are made, you will not change the wall's opinion on anything. It is solid. It is unwavering, and it perceives itself as the sole structure, holding up a ceiling waiting to fall upon everyone in the house. A wise man does not argue with a fool, because it will do neither of them any good.

I will merely restate that many Americans (read United States Americans) are not like TC. We realize that America, though we love and believe in her ideals, has made many mistakes. We realize that America has destroyed countries and killed millions. We also value the opinions of those outside America on both the world and America herself. Again, I apologize for the mad rantings of my countryman

I apologize for butting in but I fail to see why a tirade on the greatness of the United States is central to the original question. It was "Is Anti-Americanism any different from Anglophobia or Francophobia that came befeore? Is is different from the fear of Russia or China? ". The question seems intended to be an objective comparison of Anti-Americanism and the fear of other nations. This is about what people think of the U.S., not whether it plays a positive or negative role in the world, right? I personally feel that (note that this is an opinion based on my limited experiences as an American citizen living abroad) it is not American ideals or economic power that is the cause of Anti-Americanism. The type of intense dislike being discussed here doesn't often arise simply based on economic competition. Also, most people I know tend to agree with American ideals. I think the real problem lies in the American sense of superiority and self-righteousness that makes the United States feel justified in doing whatever it considers necessary to defend democracy, freedom, etc. I don't feel that people can't accept the existence of a country wealthier than their own. Just my two cents.

carpenter (645 D)

@nightlord, I agree with you, but to answer the question at the start of this topic.
Americans prevent anti-americanism to be similar to fear of other countries. In the rest of the world Americans' image is that they tend to think they're better in - next to - all ways, though a lot of non-Americans disagree. Due to the international nature of your country, this is viewed by many nationalistic Americans as anti-Americanism. G.W. Bush saying, "either you're with us, or you're with the terrorists" fueled this thought in some parts of the country. Unfortunately, in times of low economic growth or economic decline, such voices are the loudest.
So: if you think there's a lot of anti-Americanism or hate other countries, you're probably nationalistic.
Furthermore, America's sense of 'superiority' allows for imperialism - complete with colonies/sattelite states and intervening with foreign governments etc. - something the most Western-European countries unwillingly abolished at the end of WWII.
I really hope Libya/Egypt/Tunisia won't go along this path. If there people feel best represented by a Muslim-party, please let those people guide the country - though I fear a "mystical" disappearance of their leaders or an "unexpected" loss in the elections.

I find the suggestion that the reason why such genocides and dictators of the mid 20th C were soly because America chose isolationism, just laughable. Was America still isolationist when Yugoslavia imploded ? Who allowed Saddam Hussain to stay in power for so long ? Even in America's own back yard in the 80's some seriously bloody events happened, sometimes seemingly with the backing of the American Gvmt. Vietnam ? How well has America handled Afghanistan or Iraq ? In Iraq, it only took ten years for the allies to become as hated as Saddam was. And we were supposed to be helping them. The argument is so weak it's kind of funny.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
30 Sep 11 UTC
Tsarwash, you seem historically uninformed to a huge degree.

I guess up are uaware that intervention after the collapse of Yugoslavia was a NATO operation carried out by the European member states of NATO without any type of meaningful role being played by the United States, and when the Serbs began committing genocide it so exposed the ineptness of Europe to deal with something in their own back yard that they demanded Clinton intervene.

Educate yourself so you won't look so ignorant.

Could you please point out whatever it is you mean by the totally ambigous statement "even in America's own backyard in the 80's some seriously bloody events happend?"

It is always the sign of a weak mind and argument when clarity and specific examples are absent.

Saddam, and his sons are dead. Kurds aren't being gassed. Shia's in southern Iraq aren't being slaughtered. There is a freely elected Iraqi government in Iraq.

Historic Buddhas aren't being blown up in Afghanistan. Bin Laden and Al Qaeda are not training mass murderers in camps all over the country.

Gosh, I'll take Iraq and Afghanistan in 2011 any day of both countries in 2001.
