Election time
So, it's election time in Ontario on Thursday (but more importantly the start of Hockey) and I'm embarrassingly uninformed so I'm spending today doing a bit of research. Any two cents from my fellow Ontarians?

Pick one team to win straight up each week. You can't pick the same team more than once. Lose and you're out. PM me your pick by 12:30pm Sunday Toronto time, I'll cut off the picks at that time, and post a list. Good luck.

Risk better??
Risk is Diplomacy but then a random start and includes luck, isn't that better??

I've enever had a game of Risk run less than 2.5 hours and I can usually get the other side to surrender in A&A in that time.

Risk on the computer is quite quick since the rolling is sped up. I played a bit of Risk back in high school. We played on the computer when we were limited in time, but I also wrote a calculator program to automate dice rolling when we used the board.

Also, "Same-time Risk" which was available as a variant in the Risk II microprose game is a lot of fun. Any one else play that before?

My A&A games take days usually, Risk I can get done in a couple of hours. That being said, I prefer A&A to Risk, and Diplomacy is better than both (although I've never played FTF.)

Does anyone remeber playing Dover Patrol/ L'Attaque/Aviation? They seemed graet games in their time, but perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me.

Draug risk goes pretty quick actually...
don't know how you play it but if we play longer then an hour the brother of a friend who always wants to play starts whining it takes to long after a half hour and he stops playing after an hour, but a half hour is a bit long already long by us...
not all other players have a good strategy (some just go around killing untill they can't anymore :)) but if we only play with the "good guys" it goes only quicker...
it's just about thinking when it's not your turn... then we play more games and look who has won (we look at 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etcetera...
orathaic (1009 D(B))

i have played risk games where the final three players swung from one extreme to another for hours upon hours...

two weak players focussing on the one stronger guy until they both become the strong players and then they fight each other, eventually one of them is winning and we are back in the position of having two weak players and one strong...

risk 2210 is much better because it has a limit to the number of turns and lots more fun besides...
Ges (292 D)

I played 2210 a lot when it came out, and really enjoyed it. It is very tense, and boy is it hard to hold continents (and their undersea and lunar equivalents) . . .

I mentioned this before but in answer to Draug' comment about game length, the live version on Facebook would typically take 30 minutes to 1 hour. The computer speeds things up, plus there was a game clock (timed turns).

Risk is fun, but it has a lot of luck involved whereas diplomacy is little luck and more strategy and people skills (getting allies). I like it better. Plus on vDip, the sister site, there are tons of variants for tons of fun.

Another fun light wargame is Supremacy, although too often it becomes a morality tale about the danger of owning nuclear weapons. I haven't played that one in many years.

One reason that I love Diplomacy is that, unlike Risk and A&A, it really isn't a wargame. It is more of a negotiations sim with a few key variables, clear goals and a very concrete track (the board) for determining how the negotiations are proceeding.

I suspect, though, that there are a reasonable number of serious grognards in the WebDip community . . .

2210 is the best Risk variant i know of, i think the lord of the rings risk is quite poor, and i don't really like any of the 'out of the box' variants...

and how about Supremacy??
found a site online where you can play it for free but don't get it...
probably because i never played it before...

No, Settlers of Catan of course.

Last week I played an interesting game: Dominion. It's about building your own deck. Any of you guys/gals know of it?

For fans of the Game of Thrones there's also a Diplo-style board game, called... 'Game of Thrones'. It's less set than Diplomacy but otherwise quite similar, and takes less time. And you get to play with House Stark, of course. :D

Ursa, is the GoT boardgame any good? I tried the CCG and hated it.

Boardgame's nice, especcially with four or five friends around a table. The restriction is in the orders themselves, as you may know, as with a move order you can go in any direction you please. It's much more FFA in my opinion, as diplomacy (supporting others) happens and can be withdrawn at the spot. I have spent some good hours with friends keeping the balance of power in check, Baratheon from winning and the wildlings at the other side of the Wall :)

what's Game of Thrones again?

'Game of Thrones' is a popular name for a series of books by George R.R. Martin, called 'A song of Ice and Fire' with up to now five books: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire

Which has inspired among other things a really great TV series:

And a boardgame:

I believe it is now out-of-print, but there was a game called Castle Risk which is played on a European map fairly similar to the classic Diplomacy map. The cards were different, including Diplomat cards that could forcibly impose 1-turn nonaggression pacts. Details here:

A suggestion for Kestas:
I think that we should have a record of how many people (But not their identity of course) have muted that person on their profile. It would have a similar reasoning to that of the +1 button, in order for users to see what sort of behaviour is and isn't accepted by the community to promote self-moderation.
