I need help joining games
Hello Developer: The game won't let me join games. Why would that be? I log in correctly, even changed my password, logged out then back in, but when I try to join games the system tells me I am using an incorrect password.

Is there a different password for joining games??? Obviously I am using the corrrect password to sign in, otherwise this wouldn't be happening, so I am confused.

Someone mentioned Diplomacy to me, telling me it's a fun board game. So I googled it, found this community, and in the last 10 minutes I've been looking for the newbie section. I have no clue where to start, which games to join, etc. Where's the newbie section?

If I Were a Muslim, I'd Be Offended...And Why Can't Palin Learn When To Shut Up...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20100719/pl_politico/39899 Now don't get me wrong, a mosque built near Ground Zero in NYC is a bit odd and I have mixed feelings about the issue, but to make the connection and say Muslims, rather than terrorists perverting Islam, attacked us bordering on outright bigotry. "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing," Nice, Palin, nice...

I agree. PPSC is the best. It gives material incentive to work toward a survive if you're down in the dumps.

I don't understand why someone wouldn't want to play as the same country three times in a row. The third time is supposed to be the charm.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
05 Jul 10 UTC
I'm interested. My resignation rate is a bit high (4%) due to chronic live game playing.
Just a suggestion: along with the win bonus, there could also be a subtraction from those who allowed the win. A percent taken from all survivors would be an incentive to draw.

e.g. France wins with 18 and gets plus the 15 win bonus for 33. Before this happened, Turkey had the decision to either stalemate or let France win to stab Russia for some extra SC's before the game ends. Turkey isn't sure how his stab will turn out. He could get anywhere between three and five supply centers before France takes over his three SC's in Italy.

If Turkey has 10 Supply Centers before he stabs Russia and there is a 10% deduction from your points for a survive, then:

At 10, he will get 9 D
At 11, he will get 9.9 D
At 12, he will get 10.8 D
At 13, he will get 11.7 D
etc...

Obviously, he will lose out on points if he only takes three or four supply centers from Russia (while losing his three to France). Meanwhile, if his stab is succesful and he gets five or more from Russia, he'll get more points.

Just a suggestion. It might give it too much of a WTA feel than you're going for. But it does provide incentives to both stab and stalemate.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

Oh, I did not explain this properly in the rules, I ser that now...

Ok, when I said that for a draw or survivals one gets 5 D plus how many centers they hold, it actually also meant that draws are not equal. If you have a three way draw with 17-16-1 centers this will mean 22-21-6 D respectively.

I want people to try and grow up to the very end and only then play for draw - I font want them to give games away - that would be quite frustrating actually, if it happens.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

Oh, this auto-correct really is no match for my typing skills on the iPhone. Hope it's understandable :)
Mm..I look back at the OP and see that you explained it right. I didn't mention the 5 in my post because I missed it the first time I read it. However, that doesn't change the fact that there is no difference between point allocation in draws/survives.

Flashman's point still stands. There will be no reason not to play for a strong second. I personally don't mind. But my remedy would work to balance out between greedy play and drawing. Maybe it could be considered for future Bulgarian Opens or other tournaments.
@Barn3tt

You're definitely good enough to join if I am. :P

If everyone meets the requirements other than resignation, does it matter? Those are for live games, I doubt he ever NMR's in normal phase games if he has enough time on his hands to play a lot of live games. And you don't get that many points by resigning in games.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

I don't understand what's the problem with playing for:
1 - win
2 - a strong 2nd finish in a 3-way draw, presumably after you gave it a shot for a solo and then realized someone else will get there faster, so you successfully organized a resistance, maximizing your own result

How do you think it should be? :)
What flashman was pointing out is that you would play for a strong second as a survive instead of a strong second in a draw. I agree that it's best to finish second than third in Supply Centers in a three-way draw. But I'd agree with flashman, in a regular game I'd play for the draw with less supply centers than the survive with more. However, these aren't regular games.
BTW, I think it's fine the way it is. I'm not disagreeing with anything. I'm just offering a remedy for someone like flashman, who doesn't like the idea of playing for a strong second instead of drawing.
flashman (2274 D(G))

My one reservation right now is as follows:

the value of a small draw, and coming second, is high enough to encourage a style of early play that eliminates one or two countries quickly rather than developing a longer term approach - a problem echoed in the current Leagues. I can see Austria doing worse than usual under these circumstances.

I am therefore amused to see a couple above saying that country draw does not matter. Hmmm, lack of experience perhaps?

I am more attracted to your idea of Poker Dip. Truly, like the HIghlander, there can only be one.

I am still thinking through all this so please do not see this as either rejection or justification-after-the-fact like the madman.
Crazyter (1335 D(G))

Ivo, I am very interested in this league but I dont qualify on my win ratio. Also I cannot start until July 19. So if you are desperate for a player, please sign me up.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
06 Jul 10 UTC
@flash - I also like the Poker idea better now - just not sure if it's not too extreme and if there'll be enough people interested in trying it. Maybe when we have non-rated games/accounts it will be easierto try

As for games usually resulting in a nation or two getting killed quickly - I think this is a normal occurance in any game, regardless of the scoring - the map is crowded - people have to die - you cannot expect to have all nations alive until the end.

Thanks to all who expressed interest - a few more are needed still :)
flashman (2274 D(G))

I think you need to change the name to attract initial interest. Nothing wrong with being Bulgarian, of course, but the Bulgarian Open sounds like a Golf Tourney to me. How about Bulls Blood or something more macho.

Any more thoughts on Poker?

Of course, the other way to approach the ratings question is to gather seven players for a WTA game, with the game being cancelled if a draw/stalemate is achieved...

But the lowest ranking player (on points) has to bet his whole account on this one game. All or nothing.

I realize the format is still in flux, but I'm curious what the current player list is.

Reason I ask: I'm sitting for someone, so my rare free time is even less now, which makes it less likely I'll be able to step up. Even given that I'm an alternate, I prefer not to completely screw up a game if possible ;)

Can't let this thread slip away...

1) On the name quest, how about Extreme Dip for a true WTA nothing else counts set up?

2) I had a dream the other night in which we could bet on Dip, as in Poker, and we were at the table and someone said,

"Let's all bet a grand that we can win." and we all thought that was brave until someone pointed out that not everyone had that kind of cash to play with. He though continued with,

"My girlfriend. You can have my girlfriend." and as she was absolutely gorgeous we thought that was a better deal - only we'd all have to put up a girlfriend for the pot and that one then melted as well. Someone else suggested,

"Strip Dip?" and was quickly shuffled out of the room. I mean, seven overweight men?

Sanity was restored when the youngest offered a physical test,

"The winner gets to sit back and drink, the rest have to do 250 press ups inside thirty minutes..."

I preferred the drinking part so I said, "Just let the winner get pissed on whatever he liked but the rest pick up the tab..." and I thought that would carry the day until the eldest suggested that,

"What about food. Surely he should get to stuff himself royally as well?" with the losers both coughing up and having to watch such Bacchanalian excesses.

You are the last of the seven players: what would you suggest we bet?
