I need help joining games
Hello Developer: The game won't let me join games. Why would that be? I log in correctly, even changed my password, logged out then back in, but when I try to join games the system tells me I am using an incorrect password.

Is there a different password for joining games??? Obviously I am using the corrrect password to sign in, otherwise this wouldn't be happening, so I am confused.

Different Rules FTF Diplomacy
Quick question about if there are any subtle differences in the rules of FTF Diplomacy and the game on this site.
Dosg (404 D)
23 Jul 10 UTC
Hi all,

I am playing a FTF game in a couple of weeks and just wanted to be sure on something.

Are there any differences in the rules between the game on this site and the actual board game. I ask because I'm used to how orders are resolved here and don't want to find myself disputing a ruling, basing my argument on a rule that is unique to this site.

Sorry if this has come up before. I haven't searched through the archive forum.

Thanks.
diplomat61 (223 D)

It should be the same.

If you have not played FTF before look up the thread from about 10 days ago on someone's (Ava?) who was about to play their first 'real' game.
hopsyturvy (521 D)

There may be different rules about draws, cheating, and so on - there's a lot more scope to misorder creatively, some FTF players go so far as to steal each others' order sheets etc.
Dosg (404 D)
23 Jul 10 UTC
Thanks, I'll have a look for that one.

I've played before, but not for ages. It just occured to me that there might be some resolutions of orders that we are forced to accept here (because if complex coding etc.) but are not true to the original rules.

That's great if there aren't!
yebellz (729 D(G))

The implementation of the rules on this website is correct, despite the complex coding. The developers have put a lot of hard work in ensuring that it meets the DATC test criteria

No. There is a difference.

In FTF communication is not allowed during retreats and builds. It is allowed on this site. That is the only difference as far as I know.

Good catch abgemacht. Also, the auto disbands on this site should a player not enter orders have a couple of bugs and don't always follow the rules exactly. But that is so rare in FTF...
Dosg (404 D)
23 Jul 10 UTC
Thanks everyone.

@abgemacht: thanks for pointing that out. I'd forgotten that isn't allowed in the board game.

@yebellz: that's great to know. . .and much appreciated.
Are convoys in ftf Diplomacy as likely to go off as they are here? Or do they get disrupted like support?
Draugnar (0 DX)

Same rules apply, so I'd same same odds. It would have to be dislodged to fail.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

One difference is that in a normal F2F game, you input move orders as unit A moves from B to C whereas this website, due to complex coding, has us enter the move orders as unit A moves to C from B.

So that is an important difference. And that is mentioned in that other thread, but thought it worth mentioning here too.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Jul 10 UTC
Lets clarify that confusion Alderian put in...

Moves are the same (unit A to B)
But supports are entered backwards here (unit C support move to B from A).

Also, remember to state what kind of unit and leanr the abbreviations.

A=Army
F=Fleet
H=Hold
- = move
C=Convoy
SM=support move
SH=support hold

So

A Mar-Bur
A Mun SM A Mar-Bur

Alternatively, the support can be written A Mun S A Mar-Bur because you are clearly indicating a support move.

Abbreviations are IMPORTANT. There are some variations depending on where you play. When in doubt, write it out. For example: in some circles Cha=English Channel whereas Eng is the official. Some house rules don't care if you use Tyr for Tyrrhenian Sea or Tyrolia because the to part of the move will clarify what's going on. In others, you better differentiate otherwise it's ambiguous. Same with Liverpool and Livonia.
Crazyter (1335 D(G))

Yes be careful about abbreviations. I got in trouble writing "Nor" instead of "Nwy". A player claimed I could have meant North Sea or Norweig Sea, even tho my intent was clear it was Norway. If in doubt, spell it out.

2 other tips:
1.It is VERY fast paced like playing a live game here. 15 minute round is really only 12 minutes long, once you read thru the orders, etc. ANd then you sometimes have to wait in line to talk to a player.

2. There are a lot of clues like facial expression and body language and watching a huddle between 2 other players and you can see who is talking to who (but etiquette demands that you cant listen to their conversation). THis is how the game was meant to be played, which is why I oppose anonymous games on this site.
The Czech (39951 D(S))

The rules say you can listen to others. Part of the game in fact.

Thanks Draug. I'm a bit sick right now and apparently more foggy headed than I thought.

Where's the newbie section?
Someone mentioned Diplomacy to me, telling me it's a fun board game. So I googled it, found this community, and in the last 10 minutes I've been looking for the newbie section. I have no clue where to start, which games to join, etc. Where's the newbie section?

Occam's Razor and God
Occam's Razor is a theory that basically says that the least complicated option is usually the correct one. Atheists have been using this theory to state that God cannot exist, because a universe without God is simpler than a universe with God. (Continued)

If I Were a Muslim, I'd Be Offended...And Why Can't Palin Learn When To Shut Up...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20100719/pl_politico/39899 Now don't get me wrong, a mosque built near Ground Zero in NYC is a bit odd and I have mixed feelings about the issue, but to make the connection and say Muslims, rather than terrorists perverting Islam, attacked us bordering on outright bigotry. "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing," Nice, Palin, nice...
