7. 25th Hour

10. Star Trek (2009)
I always liked Star Trek, but never before has it been that cool, and that fun.
9. Eastern Promises
A very tense, well made, and well acted movie. Incredibly layered characters.
8. The Maltese Falcon (the version with Humphrey Bogart, obviously)
Just, very very cool. I love noir and this is the quintessential one.
7. The Lord of the Rings (can I count all three as a single entry?)
Nothing beats it for scale, or scope.
6. Pulp Fiction
Totally changed the way people make movies, and watch movies. Also just really cool.
5. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
So funny, massive deconstruction of the noir genre. Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious.
4. Up
Secretly I love kids movies, and Up is the best one I've ever seen. Also totally accessible to adults.
3. The Princess Bride
Very funny, wonderful take on fairy tales. And it lets me be a romantic.
2. The Big Lebowski
Just, so surreal and so funny.
1. Rear Window
Hitchcock's masterpiece. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Oh crap, how did I leave out Pan's Labyrinth? OK yeah, Pan's Labyrinth, is #4. Bump everything else on my list up one, and make Star Trek an honourable mention.

@SSReichsFuhrer:

I sure hope you're talking about the original Matrix movie and not those god-awful sequels... even the original I don't care for (on the one hand flashy effects and on the other philoophy that I think is just, for lack of a better work right now because I'm tired, bullshit and can be counterexampled and when looked upon logically or even from an existentialist point of view it just seems implausible to me, so that ruins it, the only decent idea is the IDEA OF a Matrix, the reality-illusion thing, but that's an idea that goes back to Plato and his Story of the Cave, so that's no new idea, so I don't grant the story points for creating a "new" idea or posing a "new" philosophic point at all there)

So I'd have to say liking "The Matrix" is an opinion, too. ;)

Looking at other ones here... Megean Fox isn't THAT hot, hot, but I just saying not... THAT hot... and I kind of like how a lot of folks here have Star trek: The Wrath of Khan OR Star Trek XI/2009, but no one has both on the same list... seems a bit of a minor rift in Trekkie-land... I love them both, but I left, myself, ST XI off my top ten in favor of Khan for two reasons: I think Khan is a deeper story in a lot of ways, the villain ESPECIALLY, Khan vs. Nero is no contest, and XI just came out still not quite a year ago, so I'll wait a bit to put it in context, but I'd say it'd be definitely Top 15 for me, maybe it'll join Khan in the Top 10, maybe its SEQUEL or BOTH sequels will, as two are greenlit... yay for Kirk and Crew now going to be back exploring where No Man Has Gone Before for a LONG time to come!) ;)

"I sure hope you're talking about the original Matrix movie and not those god-awful sequels... "

I will agree with the general sentiment, but I must say that the first Matrix sequel had THE BEST car chase/action sequence in the history of film, which has not been equaled before or since. The fight scene in the Merovingian's lobby was also pretty damned good and one of my all-time favorites. The rest of the movie (particularly the first half) generally sucked, but it certainly had some very redeeming qualities.

The second sequel, however, had none of those redeeming qualities (IMHO).

@obiwanobiwan I think the difference between people who say Star Trek II versus Star Trek XI is a generational thing. I like XI more, (It's 11th overall on my list of favourite movies), and Star Trek II is actually older than I am. I suspect that that's a trend you'd find overall. Just a thought. Obviously, as a sci-fi nerd I say both are great movies, but I think that might account for the differences in taste.

Matrix- The first did have a considerable impact on action movies and was a dam fine fun ride. The second, i agree with tolstoy, great car chase but poor pacing and the love story angle was a drag on the movie, however I did like The Architect and the whole
" ninety-nine percent of the test subjects accepted the program provided they were given a choice - even if they were only aware of it at a near-unconscious level. While this solution worked, it was fundamentally flawed, creating the otherwise contradictory systemic anomaly, that, if left unchecked, might threaten the system itself. Ergo, those who refused the program, while a minority, would constitute an escalating probability of disaster. " situation.

@Mafialligator - Rear Window was great, but To Catch A Theif is Hitchcock's greatest movie. Rear Window and North by Northwest are tied as his second greatest.

You know, there are about 25 movies in my top ten list. It just depends ont he day and the mood. Everything from serious dramas like Schindler's List to thrillers and sci fi and fantasy and comedy and even some horror flicks (Cube comes to mind). But #1 always seems to be 2001.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

@Malligator:

Haha, "Khan" is way older than me, too. I think it is a generational thing, those who loved the Original Series place "Kan" on the list, and those that love the later series more or started with this film place it on the list.

Heh, well obiwan, perhaps you're the exception, to my rule. Or not. I dunno. I think you're right though. It probably has more to do with how much you liked the original series. I liked the characters, but I find it so hard nowadays to take William Shatner seriously that watching the old movies kinda becomes a joke. Which is too bad, because he's actually not a bad actor, if a little hammy, and turns in some great performances during the Star Trek films (except V).

Also yeah, I knew lots of people would disagree about Rear Window being Hitchcock's best. I've never seen To Catch A Thief actually but North By Northwest is also an excellent film obviously.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

Yeah, I think it is if you've seen TOS before to like II better; if you watched this film and then watched TOS after you like XI better.

Hey, either way- Star Trek's BACK... to boldly go where no man has gone before... BEST tagline for a show or franchise, it's just a human thing, that drive to want to go further and explore and develop...

To boldly go where no man has gone before! :D

I always think Hitchcock-Psycho...
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 10 UTC
Actual, Psycho is a mediocre film as far as Hitchcock goes. It's just that his worst films were better than many others' best films. The Birds and Psycho are two examples of his lesser films that everyone goes gaga over, but they should really look to films like thos we have already mentioned to see his real genius.

If a player misses a disband phase...
I know a disband will be automatically entered, and I guess there is some coding issue regarding what is disbanded. My question - is there a way to tell whether the disband was system entered or player entered?

Just a quick question..
I've been looking through the FAQs and I can't seem to find an answer to something; I was hoping if someone could help me out..

I've been wondering: is there a way to quit a game that's already started?
I don't need to right NOW of course, but I want to know, just in case. (Say you joined a game, and something unexpected happened and you wouldn't be online for several days; I personally would prefer to NOT hold up the game by being absent. Is there a way to leave the game?)

private chatbox doens't work properly all the time
I can't type messages in the private chatbox of a country during a game. I only have a very small window of opportunity to type letters (usually only enough time to type two letters) before all typing actions are blocked. Why is that? And what is the solution?

Thanks,
Dusan
