I'm for gay marriage, and gays adopting children and all that.
Re: The theory that humans are naturally bisexual but social pressures make us heterosexual. Those wacky psychologists think they can completely ignore evolution? If evolution makes anything happen it makes us reproduce... it's not social tendencies that shape heterosexuality, it's evolutionary imperative. With that said, that doesn't mean there's no room for homosexuality in evolutionary theory.
"Actually, Thucydides, I would say if there was not opposition to gays adopting, a healthy gay population would be evolutionarily beneficial because they could care for abandoned or orphaned children."
This is a good try, but it questionably argues that there is group selection in evolution. Homosexuals wouldn't confer an evolutionary advantage if they took care of just anyone's child. It would confer the advantage if they took care of their relatives' children so that genetic predisposition to homosexuality, if it's genetic, would be passed on through the child. This is backed by a study I read that showed that younger male siblings are more likely to be homosexual, indicating that as one mother has more and more sons, the more likely one or more of these sons will be homosexual and will be in a position to care for the other sons and their offspring. At least that's the theory of why homosexuality persistently arises. Of course, that shouldn't lead to value judgements...
Here in Canada, gays are fairly well accepted. The real issue I see here is transexuals. I don't think they get nearly as much respect, acceptance, or even just tolerance as gays. When a drag queen walks around downtown Toronto, everyone stares, and a few people laugh and point, or just chuckle. It's terrible. There's not enough awareness, and I think they're overshadowed with all the gay and lesbian issues, when in the end it's all the same issue of gender divisions.
