Monetization via distributed processing ?
After the trial a week ago distributed processing seems to be a potentially effective way to monetize the site without irritating ads or premium accounts. It's not as lucrative, but it is better and more consistent than donations, and it would still provide an incentive for me to work on the more mundane coding which I'm otherwise not interested in

I think most people would gladly trade some (otherwise unused) CPU usage while playing to see further development on the site (and perhaps leave their browsers open as an alternative to direct donation).
But I'd like to hear from those who experienced crashes a week ago, it was the only negative aspect of the trial and it seemed to only be a small subset of Firefox 3.0.1 users, so hopefully it can be resolved and I can go ahead with it

Why was Good Times-2 drawn?
Not all of the players voted for a draw, and now I have received less points than I paid to buy-into the game.
Could a Moderator/Administrator explain and possibly rectify the situation?

Massive NMR's in -01 why do you punish yourselves this way?
I just looked at the open games and found two that stand out with 3 or 4 countries that did not move in 1901. Why are you all remaining people playing these games? Call for a draw and end the misery. It is not Diplomacy if you do not have 7 active players.

Rules Download
New to the game and the site... where do I download a complete set of rules? The obvious ones I get, but the more remote ones I'm having trouble with. For instance, if I make an attack out of a country, can an army retreat into it from if dislodged out of another area (not where the attack is directed)? Is my support to a third country cut when the army attacking me is dislodged?

I took over a cd in game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6148 only to find that all the other players had voted for a draw in a paused game. What are our options now? If I allow the game to be drawn, what is my return on my investment in points? Might I be permitted to be removed from the game, as if I had never joined, so that I do not take a "draw"?

Cheaters
In a recently initiated game (Good times-2), 5 accounts were made and joined a 100 point game all together and all within one hour of each other. Additionally, they all submitted and finalized orders within this same hour and all appear to be working toward the two countries not controlled by the suspected owner of the 5. If you look at england's opening in particular, the move to Clyde seems odd.

Also, I will support an end to sexual reproduction when we can advance to artificially conceived brain-jar robots seeking to conquer the universe.

Of course, then the generic action hero stopping us will probably end up having sexual relationships and screw us all up.

Ridiculously off topic here, but is it even possible to permanently get rid of a Facebook Diplomacy account? I've removed it several times, but it always still has my information. I don't want all these people who I'm not even tangentially in contact with seeing my profile.

They didn't create this self-worshiping forum topic. Some gay guy/girl did.

p.s. I am totally cool with gays. It's a free country. You could marry a sheep and I'd be okay with it.

And yet, a ton of people who were not gay decided to pop in just to inform us, "It's okay, everyone! I'm straight, too! Really!"

Invictus; you should be able to set privacy settings which disable people who aren't friends seeing your account, in fact it should be enabled by default. Other than the number of points you have there's not much info anyone can get from a Facebook phpDip profile
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

Well, if you're going to take that view, why announce our age, gender, or religion in those other threads?
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

(Again, that was for lazysummer, naturally)
Invictus (240 D)

Thanks, it just creeped me out that it remembered.

People have every right to say that they're gay. We just shouldn't be expected to listen or care. If it irritates you then just treat it with silence. Pull a Coolidge.
lazysummer8484 (0 DX)
27 Oct 08 UTC
No the age, gender, religion topics weren't made out of self-pride they were made for information gathering. This topic is an ego-stroke.

Again I'm totally cool with gays. I'm aware lots of gays don't like to publicize their sexuality because in their words, "who cares?".

Anyway that was my 2 cents. Cheers.

Pandarsenic (1485 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
Well, the way I see it, this is also, to some degree, information-gathering. I saw it as a question of what portion of the phpdiplomacy community is homosexual, as with the male-female topic was a question of what portion of the community has which proportion of chromosomes.
I completely agree with everything Pandarsenic has mentioned in this forum and he has pulled the words out of my mouth in regards to responding to all of Lazysummer's comments.

After viewing all the questions regarding age, sex, and, religion; I became curious to know how much of the gay diplomacy population was out there. It wasn't to have an ego-stroke you dummy =) , it was meant to observe demographics. I agree with wise Inivtus in regards to silence being golden, especially when people are trying to have supportive conversations.
but then again, why should homosexuals, feminists, or any under-represented inviduals for that matter be silent. Ignoring groups is what leads to many social problems. This is why under-represented groups have had to shout and scream in order to let the majority know that "hey, we are here too, don't forget about us". Women would have not have gained the right to vote if they just sat down in the kitchen table knitting, hoping that one day a man would say, hey lets let our wives vote. Racism from the very beginning of our history which includes african americans, irish, eastern europeans, and so forth would not have gained an equal ground in our laws if they did not speak and made themselves known. Ignorance is bad and this is why it should be eliminated by informing others. Many under-represented groups hide within their nitches hoping that one day all of these reppresion will go away, but they find out that day never comes. then it takes the few brave at heart to face the majority crowd and to tell them that "hey, it does matter!"

I'm for gay marriage, and gays adopting children and all that.

Re: The theory that humans are naturally bisexual but social pressures make us heterosexual. Those wacky psychologists think they can completely ignore evolution? If evolution makes anything happen it makes us reproduce... it's not social tendencies that shape heterosexuality, it's evolutionary imperative. With that said, that doesn't mean there's no room for homosexuality in evolutionary theory.

"Actually, Thucydides, I would say if there was not opposition to gays adopting, a healthy gay population would be evolutionarily beneficial because they could care for abandoned or orphaned children."

This is a good try, but it questionably argues that there is group selection in evolution. Homosexuals wouldn't confer an evolutionary advantage if they took care of just anyone's child. It would confer the advantage if they took care of their relatives' children so that genetic predisposition to homosexuality, if it's genetic, would be passed on through the child. This is backed by a study I read that showed that younger male siblings are more likely to be homosexual, indicating that as one mother has more and more sons, the more likely one or more of these sons will be homosexual and will be in a position to care for the other sons and their offspring. At least that's the theory of why homosexuality persistently arises. Of course, that shouldn't lead to value judgements...

Here in Canada, gays are fairly well accepted. The real issue I see here is transexuals. I don't think they get nearly as much respect, acceptance, or even just tolerance as gays. When a drag queen walks around downtown Toronto, everyone stares, and a few people laugh and point, or just chuckle. It's terrible. There's not enough awareness, and I think they're overshadowed with all the gay and lesbian issues, when in the end it's all the same issue of gender divisions.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
I'm saying that gay adoption would help a population as a whole if it was equal opportunity. A community that produces gays, in general, could cope better with loss of other adults. Thus, that population as a whole would have an advantage over one that produced fewer gays as a whole.

Of course, this is all speculation, so....
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
Also, it naturally would not be equal-opportunity.
sean (3490 D(B))

i always liked the idea that rising levels of homosexuality in modern society could be the ecosystem working in tandem with evolution to control population numbers and density.

and as a logical straight male i cant understand why other straight males have problems with gay men. surely the more gay men there are the less competition we have for the women?
spyman (424 D(G))
27 Oct 08 UTC
It's perfectly okay for gay people to announce their sexuality - or not mention their sexuality on a forum or any where else. It's not offensive in any way whatsoever. It is a natural part of life.

I remember seeing a tv interview with a retired British Amry general about his opinion on letting gays join the army he said he was fine with it "so long as it was not compulsory". The way he said it gave me a chuckle.
spyman (424 D(G))
27 Oct 08 UTC
Sean I seriously doubt that the levels of homosexuality in society is rising. More likely the levels have remained the same, is just that it is more acceptable these days (in Western culture, at least)and gay people can be open about it. With regards to population, I would say the impact of contraception is far greater than a small minority opting out of reproduction.
spyman (424 D(G))
27 Oct 08 UTC
... that is a small gay minority. Obviously all those using contraception are opting out too (for as long as they use contraception).

Well, for starters, I didn't reply in this topic to garner attention.
Palpatine started this tpic, and as it was directly adressing me, I simply replied to it, in a cheerful joking manner.

I find it very irritating that this topic turned into some sort of shitfest.
The topic of this thread is "Are there any gay-gamers here"
If you are posting here to announce that you are not gay, or to announce that you do not support homosexuality, then you are posting off-topic

Your commenst are unrelated and not what palpatine asked for, and thus, the one who wants attention the most are the ones who post here unrelated to the topic.

And now, even if you do not support it, I am going to kiss my girlfriend, because I genuinely love her, and there is nothing you can do about it.
So please, continue raging and fuming and trying to find scientific arguements about the topic, it only makes me feel even more content when I am with her.
spyman (424 D(G))
27 Oct 08 UTC
By that logic your post is off-topic too. It's okay for threads to drift off-topic occasionally. Isn't it?
