Monetization via distributed processing ?
After the trial a week ago distributed processing seems to be a potentially effective way to monetize the site without irritating ads or premium accounts. It's not as lucrative, but it is better and more consistent than donations, and it would still provide an incentive for me to work on the more mundane coding which I'm otherwise not interested in

I think most people would gladly trade some (otherwise unused) CPU usage while playing to see further development on the site (and perhaps leave their browsers open as an alternative to direct donation).
But I'd like to hear from those who experienced crashes a week ago, it was the only negative aspect of the trial and it seemed to only be a small subset of Firefox 3.0.1 users, so hopefully it can be resolved and I can go ahead with it

Why was Good Times-2 drawn?
Not all of the players voted for a draw, and now I have received less points than I paid to buy-into the game.
Could a Moderator/Administrator explain and possibly rectify the situation?

Massive NMR's in -01 why do you punish yourselves this way?
I just looked at the open games and found two that stand out with 3 or 4 countries that did not move in 1901. Why are you all remaining people playing these games? Call for a draw and end the misery. It is not Diplomacy if you do not have 7 active players.

Rules Download
New to the game and the site... where do I download a complete set of rules? The obvious ones I get, but the more remote ones I'm having trouble with. For instance, if I make an attack out of a country, can an army retreat into it from if dislodged out of another area (not where the attack is directed)? Is my support to a third country cut when the army attacking me is dislodged?

I took over a cd in game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6148 only to find that all the other players had voted for a draw in a paused game. What are our options now? If I allow the game to be drawn, what is my return on my investment in points? Might I be permitted to be removed from the game, as if I had never joined, so that I do not take a "draw"?

Cheaters
In a recently initiated game (Good times-2), 5 accounts were made and joined a 100 point game all together and all within one hour of each other. Additionally, they all submitted and finalized orders within this same hour and all appear to be working toward the two countries not controlled by the suspected owner of the 5. If you look at england's opening in particular, the move to Clyde seems odd.

You're crazy. A raving lunatic who actually seems to want the world to go to hell like some kind of supervillain. I never understood the rational behind lobotomies until now.

Wait, Sicarius, really? You're saying the stock market is closed on a Saturday?!? Oh my god!

Ugh. I'm sorry, the sarcasm got the better of me. Sicarius, I work for a trading firm, and we were open during trading hours on Friday, and no one has called me to tell me not to come in on Monday, and unless they're doing something strange and secret around the office, no one trades on the weekends.

Incidentally, I asked my co-workers about this 8500 shut down the market nonsense and was informed that the market only closes if there's a certain percentage move in the Dow in one day. That hasn't happened.

Now I understand that you think the world is going to hell and capitalism is evil and all that, but you're really sounding crazy the way you're going on like this, seemingly all in the pursuit of an "I told you so" that I, and it certainly seems a large number of people here, are pretty sure isn't going to happen.

You've made your statements about this, invited public discourse about it, and frankly, I think it's been pretty clear that no one's changing their mind about this and a good number of us are getting kinda tired of the incessant Chicken Little pratter going on here. Please, please, find another issue to get all bent out of shape about, or go discuss it on a political/financial/anarchist forum. I, for one, am here to play Diplomacy and socialize with other such interested people on the internet, not be told about the imminent threat of global financial collapse that's coming Real Soon Now.

Please don't take this as a sign that I have any ill will towards you personally, I'm just really tired of reading 10 threads a week about this.

I haven't been following these threads for a bit, however, it seems like Sicarius is due for an 'I told you so.' But whatever, it's besides the point.

To Invictus... What can you put forward as proof of America's inherent goodness? Surely, by stating "America's" basic goodness, you mean America is exceptionally good. In what way?

Are we inherently good by declaring pre-emptive wars? Especially against innocent targets such as Iraq (which has been proven completely innocent of every reasonable charge which our country used to inflict war upon those people.) How do you reconcile the fact that we as a country have locked up a greater percentage of our people than any other nation on the face of this planet? Or how about our establishment of an international prison with limited due process, if at all (Guantanamo?) I think it's high time you start eating your shoe.

There are good people in America, however, America is not inherently (or exceptionally) good. To make a statement which is certain to be criticized in this forum, the US is by far the most advanced and successful fascism to ever scar this planet and people.

Invictus (240 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
So you travel and don't work. Why? I can't imagine that that's a very fulfilling way of life.

And what the hell is a homeless activist? Get a job! I had one till I left for school.
valoishapsburg (314 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
my question is why would someone do nothing for a living, and how the hell can Sicarius afford internet? Do you just sit outside hotels and coffee shops stealing their Wifi?
Invictus (240 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
How did he afford a laptop?

I suppose he could just go to local libraries to use the computer. There was a homeless man who basically lived in the one in my town. He was the only one around, we're in nice suburbia-farmland, and he would sulk in the back reading rooms. His car was always in the handicapped parking space up front. He was something of an institution, a local curiosity. I met him a couple of times in the stacks the summer I did volunteering there for Confirmation, and he always smiled at me and even got to saying hello and small talk. He liked Kafka. He seemed like a pretty nice guy, but not happy. How could he be? How could anyone? He was an old guy, and his car hasn't been there for two or three years. I think he might have died. I always felt sorry for him because that's no way to live, but it seemed like there wasn't anything else he could do. This is speculation, of course. He never told me why he was homeless.

I guess he wasn't a tramp like Sicarius, since he had to have stayed within driving distance of the library, but this discussion reminded me of him. It seems like Sicarius is a bum by choice, so I don't really have the sympathy for him I had for the man in the library, but I certainly understand the paranoia from him now. Anarchism's a lot more attractive when you have nothing to begin with.
Sicarius (673 D)

I think your life is just as unfullfilling as you seem to think mine is

there have been innumerable disscussions about my lifestyle on this thread.

"Anarchism's a lot more attractive when you have nothing to begin with"
this only shows me that you have a poor grasp of anarchist ideals
Invictus (240 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
I have a fulfilling life. I'm in college, joined a frat, have a hot new girlfriend, aced my last midterm, bought a betta fish, probably have an internship lined up for the summer, and I even went canoeing last week. I also have a home.

You of course have every right to do nothing productive in your life, and you don't need to justify it to me or anyone else. It's just hard for us sedentary folks to understand why someone would want to drift aimlessly from place to place and believe in such devastatingly depressing conspiracy theories. But again, it is your life and you have every right to do what you want with it.

There's a big difference between armchair anarchism and how people put it into practice. If you want to live in a world of mob rule that's fine, but I'll take my law and order any day.
Sicarius (673 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
that sounds pretty much like the definition of an unfullfilling life to me. sorry for you.
i guess if you enjoy it though then more power to you.

um, anyone here can testify that I'm really not like a conspiricy theorist, I'm just seeing some very disturbing trends that have launched me into a low-level panic.

I'm about as far from an armchair anarchist as you can get.
I'm homeless in part because I am so active

I dont really think theres any salvaging the economy. this is a band-aid on a bullet wound
I kind of suspect the continued economic crisis will be used as an excuse for martial law.

ok, I'm crazy. I have a foil hat on so the aliens cant read my mind
Invictus (240 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
But why? Why declare martial law? What do they gain? Tell us that.
valoishapsburg (314 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
Contrary to what Sicarius believes, although some people may be ignorant to some of their civil liberties being slowly eroded, something as clear cut as martial law probably wont be taken lightly. Americans still love their liberties and rights.

Also, Sicarius simply doesnt conform to what we as westerners find to be fulfilling (or at least the vast majority of us). Things like having a home, getting an education, having a family, having a job, etc...
Sicarius (673 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
well they wont declare it. it will just happen. when our liberties are eroded enough, we'll already be there.
also I want to make it clear that I see this as possible, maybe probable, but not inevitable.

my education and family status are complete assumptions on your part, and I do not appreciate it.

what would our government gain by declaring martial law? they get to stay in power. duh.

Kestas - re: Phantom money

Here's an example I heard on the radio that cleared it up for me.

Say I have $100 and I put it in a bank, then you go to the bank and get a $50 loan. With that $50 you pay Sicarius to mow your grass, he then puts the $50 back in the bank. We would think that the bank has $100 still but their books say they have $150. Now lets say Invictus takes out a loan for $90 to pay Jerkface for triming his palm trees. Now Sicarius, waiting for the Market Crash, decideds that he wants to pull his $50 out, but we know there's only $10 in there, so the bank has to refuse, then I find out about it and want my $100 back, but they have to refuse me too, because there's only $10 in the bank, after all. Now if you and Invictus default on your loans, they'll never get the money back that they already have on thier books.

I think that's about as simplified as it gets - multiply that example by 100 Million and you'll have a picture of what's going on with the "phantom money"
Invictus (240 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
Argh! Stay in power! This is America! You are living in a fantasy world if you honestly believe that the present administration would basically stage a coup d'etat to cling to power. It's maddeningly stupid of you to believe that anyone would in the government would be stupid enough to think that would work. Can you imagine the reaction? People were angry enough in 2000 (rightly or wrongly), what do you think would happen if there were tanks in the streets to keep them in power? And the international reaction! America is built on the idea of freedom and democracy. There's nothing left if there's a coup in America. This idea of individual freedom we've been experimenting with since the Enlightenment would be gone in an instant.

It will never happen. You sir, are kookoo-bananas. If there's martial law, if there's some horrible disruption in our way of life, I won't just eat my shoe I'll go down in person to your cardboard box or garbage can or hollow under the porch or Hooverville or wherever you're staying at the time, Sicarius, and shake your hand and say that you were right. Until then I suggest that you lighten up and stop assuming that we're all going to hell in a hand basket. So stop it it's not going to happen!
Darwyn (1601 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
Invictus, I hate to say it, but the coup d'etat happened long ago before any of us were even born.

If you had to place a date, it'd be December 23, 1913.
Sicarius (673 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
the first sign is denial

in all seriousness though, it is a possibility.
do you really think the current administration WOULDN'T do something drastic to remain in power? the present admin has been the biggest travesty for american civil liberties since jim crow.
the patriot act, all the new executive powers, the creation of new departments that routinley bend (or break) the law, the deployment of combat troops for a domestic tour of duty, massive breaches of the constitution in prisons (guantanamo, never never lan, etc.) the brutal repression of media recently (illegal search, seizures, and detainments of press members) and the fervor with which the gov has persecuted political dissidents
Invictus (240 D)
13 Oct 08 UTC
I really believe that there is a genuine feeling of civic duty and respect for the rule of law in our elected representatives that would prevent them from bringing the world's longest uninterrupted period of constitutional government to an end for their own selfish, political gain. It won't happen, Biff (Sicarius). It just won't. And it never will. Not so long as the spirit of the American people endures. I'm actually more worried that the Rays will find a way to blow their shot at the pennant than I am about that evil man George Bush declaring himself emperor and putting me in a prison car.
