Star Wars has an intrinsic problem with wanting to be the underdog. All of the original trilogy was them being the underdogs in a resistance: that's fine, that was the premise, that was the story, that was that. The prequels did OK in the plot structure of rebuilding the clone wars: a basic fight between two fairly equal sides... but it was in all ways a prequel trilogy, and was by necessity limited.
but then episode 7 comes around. We know the rebels won in 6, we know the empire is on the run, not likely to recover any time soon... and what do we get in 7?
oh! the evil empire-like-people are back!
I mean come on folks, I would have much more loved to see the Republic restored, but make it where the resistance are the bad guys. That would have been interesting, that would be a pretty new direction in terms of movie tropes. I can see a Kylo Ren character being MUCH more interesting a world where the Jedi are a proud arrogant people, and because Ren isn't with them, he's naturally assumed to be a Sith. THAT could help his conflicted character arc, right now he's more of a whiny bitch, with no real reason to want to rule. I mean seriously, I look at Kylo, and I don't see the same kind of power hungry character I'd expect from a dictator.
Not only is it more reminiscent of modern day, and themes in our world now, because most terrorist factions are a small minority, having to hide from the world superpowers. that you can work with, and get people engaged in.
Maybe have it where the *good* guys decide to build a Death Star like device as a precautionary measure? make people nervous about who to be rooting for, but still have some basic moral divides? REALLY attack our conceptions of the universe we're in.
the original trilogy was so good because it occurred in a time when our very existence was at threat from the Soviet Union. the world war ii themes in the movie were also present (storm troopers - blitzkrieg) and the fear of fascism, domestic and abroad, was everywhere. they also had a redemption arc for Darth Vader: the ultimate bad guy! they tackled the tough questions, can you really be too far gone? what are you willing to sacrifice to win? and along with it they had (for the time) great effects, a wonderful cast, and also a lot of fun in production.
I'm worried if we keep recycling the themes over and over again, Star Wars is going to lose it's appeal. The Last Jedi hinted at some new things, but at the end of the day, it's the same divide as it was before: light vs dark, rebels vs fascists, evil vs good. I love the universe, but I want it to expand, grow, change.
eh. that's a bit of a rant. I'll go away now
