The suspect tilted his head and spat at the lawman's boots. The Mayor stepped forward.

"Well he sure looks guilty to me! Oh lord yes indeed! We'll string him up and may the good lord take mercy on him! I'm sure he is the one, oh yes indeed."

They strung him up.

He was not the one.
