Borderline Movies
List films you're not sure if they land on the happy side of par...or just barely fail...or just hit the line...Mine's "Bladerunner"--I STILL can't tell if that's the best bad movie or worst good movie I've ever seen...it has some of the best stylistic and atmospheric elements of any even partially-action film I've seen...but even with the PDK book's ideas and the VK test...so DULL, and plodding, with a plot heavier on conceptualization than payoff, until the very, very end...I dunno.

Since I have been gone for 2 years, many things have changed. The thing that I LOVE is the option to mute threads. Not that everything the people on this site say isn't fascinating, but it sure helps me clean up things and get to the threads that I am really interested in. Whoever came up with this idea...+1.

I don't like gunboats
I'm playing my first GB game and I don't like it. I don't like not being able to congratulate my ally on a good move. I don't like not being able to duck with my enemy. I don't like seeing a briliant move that requires cooperation and not being able to tell my potential cooperator about it, so that he doesn't bounce me. I do not like it Sam I Am, I do not like GB and ham.

GR vs. In-game Messages
Just curious. Post your in-game messages average (doing your best to account for gunboat, Wilson, etc) and your January WTA Classic GR.

"And I spelled my name wrong."

And can't tell the difference between a period and a comma. apparently,
I think abge is right. On the first day of an FP game, I will send a multiple of 7 messages. That will usually not happen in the average 1908 or 1912.

The other key variable we're missing is message quality. My theory is that it is the quality of your early-game messages that most determine how well you do, and I guess most would agree.

But it might be true that players who send high quality messages also tend to send more messages... so we're probably getting at something informative here.

I have 1 gunboat played and two games that were drawed in 1902. So the total would be 266 per game played.

I'm not sure I understand how the GR site is counting my games. On the WTA Peak, it says I've only got 6 games, which gives me the implausible figure of 621 messages per game.

But on the peak gunboat GR, it says I've got 39 games, so I guess that's 39 gunboats. My profile says I've finished 67 games, leaving 28 press games. Does this mean that 22 of my press games have been PPSC or public press, since only 6 are in the peak WTA ratings?

I haven't even been here that long and I have no idea what games I've played...

Between 32 full press and 2 public press games, I had 8211 messages. I don't know how to differentiate the two, so 8211 / 34 = 241.5. GR7

15192/ (105 - 40 gunboat games - 1 (my first game on the site when I just picked up a CD so that I could have a way to get to a friend's profile) = 237 msg/game.

I think that these numbers are as much about the kind of games you play as anything else, though. For example, in my most recent live game I only sent 127 messages, but in my most recent full press game, I sent 841 messages. That one was a bit unusual, but I think the point stands.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@uclabb

Yeah, I understand. I'm not expecting to halve my GR by doubling my press. But, in a game like Diplomacy, this is one of the few objective data sets we can collect. What I'd really like to see is average length of post; unfortunately, the site doesn't collect that info.

I think that uclabb is right. I'll also add that any correlation can probably be explained by saying that they're both a function of the people you play. Back when I was getting started and playing weaker competition in low-pot PPSC games, I found that people stopped sending messages within a few years, and when that happens nobody's realistically going to send more than one message per person per phase, whereas in a high quality full press game with talkative people like MM, slyster, uclabb, and Yonni (I list those names because they have the highest message counts), you're going to end up talking a lot more to people every turn.
I wish, I wish this website could give me stats like this.

I've played five games with press (one was public press which I don't know how to discount and one is not done yet but almost done) and I have sent 1471 messages so that averages to 294.2 messages/game. And my GR in January was 131)

The vast majority of my games are gunboats, but out of the 14 full press games that I've played, it's about 140 msgs/game.

Unfortunately, I'm not listed in the Jan WTA GR. I guess the last of my whopping 5 WTA games wasn't recent enough.
I subtracted my gunboat games from my total per jan GR and got 113 per game.

I really wish that I could know what I have in non-live games.
