The Ancient Med - not year 1
What year is the Ancient Mediterranean set? Definitely not year 1AD, by then the Med was a Roman Lake. Carthage was destroyed in 146BC, Egypt fell to Rome in 47BC, Greece had been Roman for centuries. Only Persia can claim some independence on that map.

17 games, 17 players
Who's in? 17 world gunboats, one game as each nation, 50 hour phases, WTA, anon, ready-up preferred (but no means required), only prearranged pauses (example, if someone insists on a winter break pause, we will ask the mods to unpause at an agreed time if we don't unpause ourselves by then), 5 D bets for a total of 85 D buy-in. Who's in?

Draws
Sifting through 10 pages of open positions, I am noticing that it's increasingly uncommon that people actually draw for a CD. In a few games, people have pushed for it, and others have seemed to have no understanding as to why they'd draw for a CD. Did this etiquette just disappear like magic? Pre-1903 CDs should *always* constitute a draw and post-1903 CDs should constitute a draw if they result in a loss of a line that would otherwise be present. When did this stop?

regular in-game press - game is essentially a classic full press game with the addition of grey press in this thread, which players can either choose to take seriously or disregard entirely. I have no idea how it will end up weighting into people's decisions or what it will be used for. I'm curious to see.
VirtualBob (224 D)
06 Feb 13 UTC
I'm not sure I understood this properly ... the game itself has full press (country specific, but player anonymous) but then this thread has full press too (country anonymous, but player specific)? That sounds like (a) twice the amount of press and (b) an easy way for someone in a different timezone (like me) to become non-anonymous quickly.

Let me think about this before joining.
erist (228 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
It's in the OP. You can post in this thread once, and only once, after each season. Not full press. We have not decided whether that post can come from a country (which may or may not be yours) or just in the form of "neutral"commentary on the game. We've had a number of people drop due to buy in and other issues, so still taking people, first come first serve. The other part (game is regular semi-anon full press, and press here is player specific but country anonymous is correct)
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
Basically its a normal game, except you can come to this thread and do whatever you want. Spill secrets, yell at other players, mock someones moves, pretend you are someone you aren't, anaylze moves... for one post per season.

Actually Erist, can you clairify the Grey press limit, is it once per year, season, or phase(including builds/retreat phases)?
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
yes it could give up your anonymity, so use it assuming that will happen? Or change up the times you craft each to maintain anonymity? Or use it sparingly? Its all up to you how you will gain a benefit/utilize an added feature.
erist (228 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
Well, let's say phase, that seems the most straightforward way to do it. But open to less often if people think that is too much. (perhaps just before spring and after spring, silence during retreat//build phases?)
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
I would vote for 24 hours after Spring moves, and 24 hours after fall moves. Maybe an initial one during opening negotiations...
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
sorry i meant within 24 hrs after each of those moves.
I liked Draug's idea in which the players had to message a 3rd party who would then post reports from Geneva.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
yea that would be pretty cool, but requires a 3rd party that is pretty active and willing.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Feb 13 UTC
Wasn't actually my idea. I just volunteered to be one of the messengers and potentially fuck with the messages ever so slightly.
So we're including retreats/builds in the grey press limit? If there is a retreat after the spring phrase, we're not allowed to post our one message for that season here until after the retreat is over? And same for builds?

I think it would be more fun if grey press were allowed after each phase, but that means it`s possible for 2 posts per spring season and 3 per fall, so I understand if we want to keep it to just one message for the spring and one for the fall. I'm not sure I could keep up with all the grey press for a very busy season...

I do like the idea of sending them through a proxy, but that creates extra work for someone. How about using something like Etherpad? (http://openetherpad.org/). We could create one and share it with the players only. Then, at the end of the 24 hour post move period, the contents of the pad are copied and pasted in this thread. We'd be anonymous in the pad, but there is IP recognition - so one person couldn't write more than one press without trying to cheat the system.
I kind of like the added dimension of seeing which players say what.
erist (228 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
Well it's an experiment. If it adds a fun dimension we can explore variations in the future. Let's do the grey press after each move phase but not builds/retreats. Just has to be in before the move expires, too complicated to keep track of another time limit. If people want to do the etherpad idea, which I also like, I'll be happy to copy the messages over, but I also kind of like the strange semi-anonymity of knowing what people are saying what, but not what nations.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
06 Feb 13 UTC
So during the Spring moves 48 hour phase length I can do grey press once and during the Autumn moves 48 hour phase length I can do grey press? If its builds/retreats you've missed your chance. We should probably all agree to label our grey press with the phase its intended for at the top just to make going back easier.
RampantLion (937 D)

It doesn't seem like you've gotten a 7th player so I'm up for joining.
I think these rules are good. Grey press once during each phase is easy to keep track off. Let's do this!

I think I am going to bow out ... too many questions (and too little time).

I would be interested some time in a true grey press game ... no in-game messaging, but country-anonymous (though player-specific) posts in the forum thread. And since it is "press", the posts should read like they were submitted by a foreign correspondent, beginning "Dateline Madrid (or wherever): ..."

I'm game, but don't understand the benefit of grey press over public press. In a no press game, maybe... If you need one more, I'll give it a spin.
erist (228 D(B))
08 Feb 13 UTC
alright, didn't grab this in time, will set it up again now that we have 7. benefit is that public press is not country-anonymous on web dip.

For the easy payment of 15 D, you can enjoy the chance to rule the
