Gunboat for Idiots
Anybody interested in another idiot's game?

So for next round? No builds allowed after 1901? Fall moves should be idiotic?

So for my Germany Fall move, was taking Holland too non-idiotic? I had fun convoying back to Kiel.

2WL, you should clarify a bit. Last time, we just weren't allowed to use any of the 10 most common openings in the spring, and there were no limits on fall moves. If you want more specific rules, we need them.
jmbostwick (2308 D)

Yeah, based on the link from the last game, players were clearly allowed to go for builds by the fall. Russia clearly took it too far, but some clarity might help so we're all on the same page this time.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

I actually forgot about not using the 10 most common openings. And you're right ghug, not clarifying rules enough was my fault. Consulting the opening list will make things a bit easier. I'll get new invites out shortly.

For the new game, please keep in mind:

- Opening moves should not include any of the top ten most common openings. For reference, consult your country at Vaftstats (http://draugnar.com/vaftstats/openings/gunboats.html)

- 1901 builds are fine, so as a result, fall moves can be as logical or illogical as you want.

Again, sorry about the confusion. Totally my fault, but at least I'll remember to clarify items like this next time I put together a game.

so you really you dont even have to make bad moves, just not top 10 openings...
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
07 Feb 13 UTC
Bad moves make it more fun. Also, if a set of opening moves aren't in the top 10, they're pretty bad...

btw Italy, I'm a little disappointed you didn't want to try a Austria/Italy lepanto after taking back the ionian. I didn't expect you to, but still.
Russia can get away with a not-top-10 opening and still open pretty standard by just ordering StP-Fin instead of StP-GoB, since only 1/10 top 10 Russia openings there order StP-Fin instead of StP-GoB. Not that I'm trying to compromise the concept, just noting that the restriction is a lot more consequential for some countries than others.

btw I busted out laughing when i saw Englands opening. well done.

how about you cant make a move for an individual unit that is in any of the top 10, therefore St.Pete has to either stay still or go to livonia.

if you need a player, I would be interested in joining. I promise to make the dumbest move at the beginning.
ghug (5068 D(B))
07 Feb 13 UTC
I think that's a terrible idea, given that no units can move to ten different spaces on the first turn. I think that it should just come down to common sense: do something interesting, different, and no SC oriented.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
07 Feb 13 UTC
Top 10 moves for kiel and all denmark or holland, no need for 10 options.
ghug (5068 D(B))
07 Feb 13 UTC
First, "and" and "are" are different words.

Second, you could have clarified that you meant that each unit can not move in a way represented in the 10 most common movesets, because you phrased it like you were separating each unit entirely in the process and then drew a conclusion that made no sense.

Third, it's still a bad idea, because it limits some units completely and because it adds too much of a limit on all ideas.

Go ahead, 2WL. I am declining to join this restart. Don't really appreciate the sportsmanship (or lack thereof) of the first try. I'll join the third time you do this. Maybe vaft and PE will be back by then.

I miss Vaftrudner :(

dub, Russia didn't really break the rules or anything. Plenty of people got builds in the first one, and Russia here can't have moved expecting two, given Rumania's occupation. I don't even really get why we cancelled.

Borderline Movies
List films you're not sure if they land on the happy side of par...or just barely fail...or just hit the line...Mine's "Bladerunner"--I STILL can't tell if that's the best bad movie or worst good movie I've ever seen...it has some of the best stylistic and atmospheric elements of any even partially-action film I've seen...but even with the PDK book's ideas and the VK test...so DULL, and plodding, with a plot heavier on conceptualization than payoff, until the very, very end...I dunno.

GATTACA was a future-tense docudrama.

Hey there are a bunch of acronyms used on this forum about the game that I haven't been able to figure out. I did a search and couldn't find them anywhere. Does anyone have a list?

Specifically, not sure what NMR, CD and PBM are.

Since I have been gone for 2 years, many things have changed. The thing that I LOVE is the option to mute threads. Not that everything the people on this site say isn't fascinating, but it sure helps me clean up things and get to the threads that I am really interested in. Whoever came up with this idea...+1.

I don't like gunboats
I'm playing my first GB game and I don't like it. I don't like not being able to congratulate my ally on a good move. I don't like not being able to duck with my enemy. I don't like seeing a briliant move that requires cooperation and not being able to tell my potential cooperator about it, so that he doesn't bounce me. I do not like it Sam I Am, I do not like GB and ham.

Best browser for webdip on Macs
I am running OSX Lion on several macs in my house and continuously drop connection to the web dip server. I go to refresh a page or move to another and I just watch the pinwheel spin and eventually tell me that Google Chrome cannot connect to the server. I have tried both Safari and Firefox with no better results. Is this a browser problem, or do I have to change some settings? Should I change browsers? Help!

Advertisements (commercialized propaganda) are often criticized for portraying things in certain ways. The first thing that comes to my mind are cigarette ads.
