It seems that we all compete against each other yet know so little about each other outside of WebDiplomacy. In this thread, we'll all state something interesting about ourselves.

Bobby Fischer on chess
"[Capablanca] wanted to change the rules already, back in the twenties, because he said chess was getting played out. He was right. Now chess is completely dead. It is all just memorization and prearrangement. It’s a terrible game now. Very uncreative." from a radio interview, 2006

Brilliant ...... 30 minutes to go before the opening ceremony and the heavens have opened. It wouldn't be England without rain :-)

I don't get how an English MP watch that opening ceremony which was everything British and not feel even a small sense of national pride yet you had Muslim women leaving the arena beaming from ear-to-ear full of national pride, I'm not sure what that tells us about anything apart from that MP is one sandwich shot of the proverbial picnic

Beijing was many things, but nice wasn't one of them. It was highly impressive, rather exciting, extremely well organised, but the one thing that stuck in my mind after watching it was the thought 'thank god I'm not Chinese'. London's show was not only very good but left me feeling exceptionally lucky to be British. I say again, bloody marvellous!

Oh, a bunch of Brits jerking off over their britishness while everyone else falls asleep. I thought the Olympics were a world event where the hosts inject some small amount of themselves into it, not a Commonwealth Games wannabe. Well, there's always Rio.

Because those Muslim women are British too.

I completely agree. One of the most important things for me - that was hardly mentioned at all, understandably, during the event - was that all of those people performing for London 2012 were volunteers who all wanted to be there and were smiling because they were happy and proud to be a part of it, not for another reason. In China, many of the people taking part were not volunteers and even those who were undoubtedly faced coercion to meet expectations - including the infamous stories of people losing their jobs outside of the Olympics because they were not performing well enough for their part in the Beijing Opening Ceremony. China was able to impress and dazzle so much because people had their homes knocked down to make way for hotels, vast amounts of money was pooled away from helping China's poor and starving for a firework fund, amongst many other examples.

People like Mitt Romney can come and gloat that no one in the country is supporting the Games - but actually, in a way, that was something I was proud of as well because at least in our country people had the ability to voice concern and criticism.

The opening ceremonies are a bunch of crap at any Olympics. Much like the half-time shows at the Super Bowl. Highly overrated. Who really cares. I am ready for some T&F, swimming, triathlon, and biking.

The high point was easily Kenneth Branagh's recitation from "The Tempest". Speaking in my capacity as an American who finds a lot to admire about Britain's history, I'm quite upset they ignored so much of Britain's rich cultural history for a thousand years, starting with Shakespeare and going from there to the Industrial Revolution, and then to a celebration of modernity. Mr. Bean during Chariots of Fire was quite funny, but I'm quite upset they decided to celebrate modern teenagerhood instead of something like King Arthur.

I loved it. Made me feel incredibly proud. I know a whole load of technicians involved who worked incredibly hard to make it happen. Also absolutely agree with Sargmacher and Octavious, I remember being blown away by Beijing from a technical perspective and left incredibly cold on a social level. Right now hoping for a gold for Cavendish!

Many things, in fact. It was not so long ago that winning gold for Britain meant everyone would know your name for years. Now you're usually forgotten after a day...

The US/China battle should be good this year. My money's on China again though. I know some people who like to compare US China and the EU, but although Europe consistantly kicks arse it never feels right supporting them.

That's Fox news, Putin. Shame on you.

All the tickets were sold (except for football) and the empty seats are where people (VIPs, media etc) haven't bothered turning up. The US got its fair share along with everyone else ages ago and no amount of American cheek will get you any more :p
Putin33 (111 D)
03 Aug 12 UTC
Come on now, you have a two-tiered ticketing process whereby all the EU folk go through official channels while Americans have to go through CoSport, who hike up the prices and offer very few of them to begin with.

This is London Mayor Boris Johnson, or BoJo.. Educated at Eton and Oxford. Only in England could this man be a Mayor .... a complete circus clown !!

On George W Bush

"The President is a cross-eyed Texan warmonger, unelected, inarticulate, who epitomises the arrogance of American foreign policy."

On using a mobile phone while driving

"I don't believe that is necessarily any more dangerous than the many other risky things that people do with their free hands while driving - nose-picking, reading the paper, studying the A-Z, beating the children, and so on."

On commuting

"I forgot that to rely on a train, in Blair's Britain, is to engage in a crapshoot with the devil."

On Euro-scepticism

"I can hardly condemn UKIP as a bunch of boss-eyed, foam-flecked Euro hysterics, when I have been sometimes not far short of boss-eyed, foam-flecked hysteria myself."

On Tony Blair

"It is just flipping unbelievable. He is a mixture of Harry Houdini and a greased piglet. He is barely human in his elusiveness. Nailing Blair is like trying to pin jelly to a wall."

On becoming Prime Minister

"My chances of being PM are about as good as the chances of finding Elvis on Mars, or my being reincarnated as an olive."

On Channel 5

"I don't see why people are so snooty about Channel 5. It has some respectable documentaries about the Second World War. It also devotes considerable airtime to investigations into lap-dancing, and other related and vital subjects."

On being sacked by Michael Howard

"My friends, as I have discovered myself, there are no disasters, only opportunities. And, indeed, opportunities for fresh disasters."

On how to vote

"Voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts and increase your chances of owning a BMW M3."

On why he voted for David Cameron as Tory leader

"I'm backing David Cameron's campaign out of pure, cynical self-interest."

On drugs

"I think I was once given cocaine but I sneezed so it didn't go up my nose. In fact, it may have been icing sugar."

On the City of Portsmouth

"Too full of drugs, obesity, underachievement and Labour MPs."

On tennis

"I love tennis with a passion. I challenged Boris Becker to a match once and he said he was up for it but he never called back. I bet I could make him run around."

On the Liberal Democrats

"The Lib Dems are not just empty. They are a void within a vacuum surrounded by a vast inanition."

Now it is getting uncomfortable, we are winning too many medals ....... it's a shame 'cos us Brits do losing gallantly so well. It's not in our national psyche just to be winners as you can tell by listening to many of the post-gold medal winning interviews from the athletes.

Would anyone on the site be interested in playing a live game of world diplomacy? Ive never been in a live version of the variant but I think it would be very exciting and much better than an average live game, I understand it could probably take a lot longer to play than usual live games to but just want to see if members of the site are up for playing one?
