Obama/Department To Halt Deportation of "Dreamer" Illegal Immigrants
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/report-white-house-halt-deportation-young-illegal-immigrants-133800284.html

I applaud this...I think it's a great decision...Obama to give a speech on this shortly around 10:15 Pacific Time. Thoughts on the decision itself and the impact on the 2012 race>

They Improve Their Appetite When They Exercise (Just As Long As No Skinny People Snicker)

Banning skinny people from a gym...because it "brings down morale"...
Isn't that sort of like getting rid of all the smart kids in class because it makes the schmucks who think "The Day After Tomorrow" is scientifically accurate feel badly when they fail? WHEN did the West develop this "fear of failure" self-esteem issue?

There Can Be Only One--Which Actors/Films Pull Off The Character Best?
The many Bonds...the many Doctors...the different Darens...different Marx Bros. and Stooges...the many Hamlets and Holmes...the originals and remakes and re-imaginings...

Give a role with multiple actors, or a story with multiple adaptations, and say which one you take over the other(s) and why...which are the DEFINITIVE portrayals and films, and which are...not? ;)

What is Christianity?
Obviously, I know that its like one of the most popular religion out there but coming from a very anti-christian background, I dont really know what they actually believe. I know the basics like that Jesus is God but like how do you get into heaven and stuff? This is NOT a debating forum.

A bit embarrassing that it ends in a 2-way if it is called a 'class', but I'm interested in other's thoughts. There are some frustrations I had with the game, but I'm not bitter because I lost. Feel free to share your feelings, especially to the 8 (we had a sub) that played.

How can you deal with obtuse 'morons' who will never give credit to opposing arguments?
Serious question. When you're debating, discussing, or arguing with people and they simply won't accept other points of view, even after reams of evidence, how can you respond? Is it best just to walk away or should we strive to educate?

How would you deal with someone utterly convinced that the Earth was flat, for example?

"I use science when they are reasonable. Can you really comprehend "4.5 whatever" billion years ago. People only live about 80 years. You are saying 4000000000000 years."

That you use this argument to justify belief in a higher alien lifeform/deity ruling over our planet is laughable.

Think about how perfect we are made. We can see, hear, touch, smell. We can eat and drink. We have a brain. How could that not be made by a god? How could the universe, as complex as it is, be not made by a higher deity?

I wonder what units you use to measure the extent of the universe to make it comprehensible. Or, conversely, the Planck scale. The total amount of debt in the world economy. The number of sand grains on all beaches. Comprehend this!

The Watchmaker analogy is a fallacy. If complexity is proof of intelligent design, then who designed the designer?
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
20 Jun 12 UTC
Do you have an answer for this?

Think about how perfect we are made. We can see, hear, touch, smell. We can eat and drink. We have a brain. How could that not be made by a god? How could the universe, as complex as it is, be not made by a higher deity?
Sargmacher (0 DX)
20 Jun 12 UTC
You're just reciting Paley's watch analogy. At least give him credit.

It's a failed logic though - if complex things must have been intelligently designed by something more complex than themselves, then your God must also have been designed by something yet more complex.

"Let me simplify this troll discussion:

What is that supposed to mean? I don't like the idea of morons populating our planet but I would prefer that to the idea of tyrants curtailing free speech.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
20 Jun 12 UTC
Think about how perfect we would have been if we could control time, fly, spit fire out of our mouths, and live forever. Or on the flip side, if nobody on earth could smell. The notion would never occur to anyone so it would not be missed. This is not proof at all that something made us.

I like fallacies! I can make my own!

The complex universe you observe is a result of an infinite series of Baum–Frampton cycles. The anthropic principle states that you are just lucky to live in one of the cycles fine-tuned for conscious lifeforms. In fact, you couldn't live in the googolplex of hellish cycles because no conscious lifeforms would evolve during them - it's as if they never happened. It's only natural that everything seems so perfect in our world.

Now prove me wrong.

I believe it is very possible the universe was created 1 second ago exactly as it is and we only believe that it existed before that point. But, that doesn't matter. Whether the earth (or universe) was created 1 second ago, 6000 years ago, or much longer really doesn't matter. We have to live life in the universe we perceive, the reality doesn't matter.

Indeed, Alderian, we have to accept the rules of the Matrix we "live" in. Luckily, the being constantly recreating our "world" suffers from the same fate by an even higher being so there's some cosmic justice after all. Don't ask me where I got this gnosis.

If, as you see it, the only explanation for the complexity of the universe is that it must have been conjoured out of nothingness by an all-powerful wizard who lives in the sky, what is your explanation for the complexity of the sky wizard? Where did he come from?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

Also, if your argument for the age on the earth is based on the proposition that the age of the earth only dates back to the start of "recorded history", then that's fundamentally flawed. It appears highly probable that the earth had been in existence for some time before any human being existed who was capable of producing any kind of record.
dubmdell (556 D)
20 Jun 12 UTC
Good point Jamie. Even by the genesis account, there's a whole week before humans were on the earth! Damn!
ulytau (541 D)
20 Jun 12 UTC
Well, yeah, the earth had been in existence for 5 days before the great sky wizard greated humans.
