Daily Bible Reading--John 1
This thread isn't meant to provoke argument, but if it does, that's ok. It's just a place to come for a one-chapter dose of the Bible. Today's reading is the first chapter of John's story of the good news as he personally experienced it, translated into modern English.

Did something change with how muting works?
Used to be, you could briefly see (and hit ESC to fully read) muted posts/people. Now, I can hit ESC before the javascript executes, but I still don't see posts form people I muted. Did the code shift to muting server side? If so, cool, but also "bummer" as I'll have to unmute people to see their bullshit (and them me if they have me muted).

Please stop being hypocritical
We ask Mujus to create a single thread for his quotes and he has done that. Please be considerate and do the same. If he wants to discuss the bible every day and there are people who want to do the same, please let them. Stop making a mockery out of their freedom of speech.

Yes I don't care if you're Christian or just in love with Christians {and like to pray for people) and think they're more mocked than Hitler supporters, which was your what you said. Christians & their fellow travelers unceasingly whine whenever anybody is the slightest bit critical of them, and then say everybody is violating their freedom of speech/religion.

If that isn't telling people to shut up, I don't know what is. He is stifling free speech, or at least attempting too. The very thing he wants for Mujus is the very thing he desires to deny others. Just sayin'...

That and maybe irony. I won't tell him to shut up, I'll just point out how his telling others to shut up is hypocritical and ironic to boot.

Putin, it's very interesting what you say about Christmas having been banned at various stages by various Christian groups. I agree that Christmas is essentially a capitalist, consumerist event, but I didn't know that it was ever banned. Where can I read more about these bannings or disapprovals?

Ok, I got 40+ papers to grade tonight, so I am not going to have a lot of time to argue with Draugnar, but I will take a little break from grading.

"Stop making a mockery out of their freedom of speech."
"I think zultar is just expressing disappointment that the world has not matured enough that we can't be nice to theists on the internet. I don't think he's actually implying that the other threads should be locked, he's just telling the bullies that maybe they should cool it, even if they're not breaking the rules."
"Moreover (responding now to your most recent post), zultar was merely pointing out hypocrisy, which in fact does exist in this case. It's perfectly consistent with the free exchange of ideas to point out to one group that they're being jerks and hypocrites."
"There is an obvious lack of respect directed a Mujus and that to me is the heart of the issue."

Draugnar, you are always harping on people about not being able to read and comprehend. I think you might want to take a bit of your own medication. I argued multiple times on multiple threads that Mujus should limit his quotes to a single thread because there is no need to clutter/spam the site with the same thing and because it is inconsiderate. I was the first one to create a "Daily religious post" thread.
Here, I did not say that Mujus does or does not have the right to speak (I do think the freedom of the speech/idea is fundamental to an enlightened society) nor did I say that you and others do not have the right to mock them. I asked that both sides be considerate and respectful. If you want to engage them in a meaningful conversation about the daily bible quotes or the validity of the quotes themselves, fine, great, go for it. It is the clear lack of respect for Mujus (on the personal side of things) and the "daily" spams (on the more practical side of things) that I have issues with.

"If that isn't telling people to shut up, I don't know what is. He is stifling free speech, or at least attempting too. The very thing he wants for Mujus is the very thing he desires to deny others."
I don't remember telling people that they couldn't discuss the issue. In fact, if I take the time, I could dig up posts where I said I like these discussions and would encourage people to participate. I clearly asked Mujus to stop on the forum and in private chats to stop his proselytizing and consolidate his posts into one waaaaaay before I asked folks to stop spamming "daily" threads to be respectful and considerate.
Moreover, we have you on record multiple times requesting and bitching about the derogatory use of homosexual terms and that they should be banned or silenced or whatever. If that's not stifling free speech, I don't know what is. That, to me, is hypocrisy again. I despise hate speech and think they should be curtailed because they do not do anything but incite hate. They do not at all add values to the discussion. Why should they be curtailed but not banned? Because they are disrespectful and inconsiderate and they do not positively contribute to the worth of the conversation.

"This is a private site. There is no freedom of speech."
That, I just find to be greatly amusing as you, Draugnar, have more than once abused the freedom of speech on this site. If Kestas and the mods/admins do really moderate the forum, then you would have been banned/silenced (not voluntarily) many times over. I applaud the mods and most people for being advocates for the freedom of speech whether or not they are guaranteed or given on a site or in a society. FoS is more important as an idea, not as a rule or a law, just as being considerate and respectful is more important to do as human beings, not because it's a rule or a law.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
01 May 12 UTC
Just to be clear; the mods can only act with kestas' approval; they have supported this site by doing a jon here, but that doesn't necessarily mean they support freedom of speech. Kestas in the other hamd definitely does, along with creating opensource software; which is some freedom of access to information.

Meanwhile, the mods have discussed with Kestas how to best moderate the forum. In view of recent chamges in behaviour i'm sure this conversation will continue; and i'm sure many of the mods, myself included, value freedom of speech. But that isn't necessary to do the job.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
Di you not just say they should stop posting "Daily" whatever threads? Is that not stifling their freedom to mock in the manner they choose? To mock is to be disrespectful. You are making a request to stop being disrespectful which is ironic as the freedom of speech you so espoused includes the freedom to express that speech in a disrespectful manner.

The irony beyond your hypocrisy is that I agree with being respectful on this subject (my own "Daily" was poking fun at the insanity of so many "Daily" posts).

But, while I may agree in principle, I disagree with telling them what they should and shouldn't do unless they reach the point of hate speech. Especially when one of the professed "Christians" came into the Buddhism thread and got so snarky and just plain rude.

Asking people to stop acting like complete fools while claiming to be open-minded is not stifling their freedom of speech, nor is it ironic, or hypocritical. It's simply a request that people stop making the community look bad. Of course they are allowed to disagree, but as you Draugnar, have proclaimed over and over, "this is a self moderated forum". And what is asking others to cease rude behavior besides self moderation?
krellin (80 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
The issue is not what "should" or "should not" be done. What needs to be pointed out is that there are a bunch of self-absorbed assholes on this sight that CLAIM to be open-minded intellectuals. They will talk about all sorts of bullshit and pat themselves on the back for how smart they think they sounded when they discussed Shakespeare or some other nonsense. They gladly support failed political philosophies, they do this that and the other thing.

MOST IMPORTANT....when they see things they disagree, they discuss it in the thread, mostly in a polite manner.

EXCEPT....when Christianity is the issue....when the Bible is the issue. THEN it is OK...even APPLAUDED...to mock not just in the thread....not just in one parallel mocking thread....but in CONTINUOUS mocking threads....Daily this....Daily that....all bullshit mock-threads aimed at Mujus and his Bible Reading thread....which HE COMPLIED TO REQUESTS in keeping in a single thread, instead of a daily new thread.

So I ask you: Who are the closed-minded asshole here? The Christians with their daily thread? Or the "open minded" assholes that don't just mock once....twice....but will mock continuously because....well, that IS the question, isn't it?

Coincidentally...the Bible itself PREDICTS this behavior by the unsaved, and thus supports the Bible above all other religious books for those that know scripture....lol That's the hilarious irony of the fools that mock the Bible every day, when they do not mock other religions and philosophies the same. The Bible *predicts* this behavior....and thus proves itself.

So TAKE HEART Christians....you can be sure of your faith if you believe because it is all predicted.

Alls I got to saybisbif you don't believe in Christianity or religion in general then don't read his daily bible verses. You are making fools outta yourselves. You mock him for doing it but yet you are being the ignorant one reading his posts. Personally I like his posts. But ignorance is bliss and my friends mocking someone for their religion is like mocking a child with birth defects that gave the one arm, one leg, and no hair... (it's not that cruel) but I'm just trying to make my point. Ignore the posts. You don't have to mock them. Just do unto others as you'd like to be done to you. That easy. I'm not siding with anyone. Just saying what should be said.

The Bible (specifically Jesus) predicted the world would end by 60 AD.

"Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation."

There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom

How'd that prediction turn out?

Everyone! When you mock them, you're playing into their hands:

"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matt. 5: 11-12

I just love the reading and comprehension abilities of some people on this site.
I also love how so many of them also claim that they are much more civilized and considerate in person but they do not do so online. I guess many of you wouldn't go around and mock people who go door-to-door to try to convert you ONLY because you don't have the balls to do so but not because it isn't the respectful thing to do. It's a damn shame that you think the internet makes it okay for you to act contrary to how you would act in RL.
fiedler (1293 D)

We are what we pretend to be. The internet is real life.

So, what you're saying is, people are more 'respectful' in real life because of the threat of severe consequences to their free expression?

Gee Zultar, I wish you had the authority to police the internet. That way people could never express their true thoughts. We could all live in quiet fear of what Zultar decides is respectful or not.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

Well, last time we did a poem by a tragic, mad, male genius, Mr. Poe...how about a tragic, mad, female genius, Emily Dickinson? (We'll do someone from the British Isles tomorrow, so don't worry, this thread isn't going to be a sad example of American Exceptionalism and shut out the rest of the English-speaking world.) So! A very short poem by Dickinson (and how prudent this one is, given these "Daily Bible Readings") and more talk of her inside...
