Springing Forward
Daylight Savings Time starts tonight for most of us in the United States, Canada, and several Caribbean island nations. This isn't the same date as for most other participating countries; consequently, this meant we all had to change our time zones manually when I last was on this site a few years ago.

Remember to Spring Forward if it applies to you, and remember to double-check your clocks on the webDiplomacy website after you do it.

An interesting contest. Which General was better does the community think? Overall, for they both had their specifics where they would win.

My apologies to the players of "two?" gameID=82846
I'm writing to apologize to the players of game "two?" (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=82846) for abandoning the game. An emergency came up and I had to leave. I understand me leaving threw the game off balance for everyone and for that I am sorry. I hope I get a chance to play you guys again in the future.

Sincerely,

United Auto Workers bailed out by Obama
Why did Americans who don't work at General Motors, about 99.9% of the population, waste hundreds of billions bailing out GM? Obama's dependence on union money of course. Our reward
Production of the Chevy Volt halted and 1,300 jobs lost.

Random Person to Post Wins
We all know that the concept of "Last Person to Post Wins" is deeply flawed – it encourages excessive posting which is similar to bidding wars; only except of money, one constantly invests his free time to stay on top which favours the trolls the most, since they have no life and therefore plenty of free time. Random Person to Post Wins alleviates the situation of those who wish to win but can't bother trying. Enjoy.

England just left a surprisingly solid position in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=81140

It's Autumn retreats, so England will have two builds and a total of six units before there's any new action.

Government "aid" to the poor, a success or disaster?
Socialists, statists, liberals and the like consistently, constantly, and incessantly claim that government administered aid is the "only" solution for poverty and uplifting the poor. Where is the real evidence of this success? The youth riots in Britain provide evidence of its failure.

Has anyone considered adding this option? It makes sense that if someone misses both of their first year's moves, that the game is imbalanced. Would allowing a setting to cancel the game if someone goes CD by the end of the first year be feasible?

Government should regulate WebDip's Website
Following the logic that braindead socialists post on this site all the time about how government knows best then lets put their insane ideas to the test.
If government can run my health care better than I can then surely government could run Webdip better with one hand behind its back than the mods do.

A tax policy scenario.
This thread assumes that the economy is not a zero-sum system, but instead assumes that the economy is a dynamic system capable of real growth.
Thus any assumed increase in wealth results from the output of productive activity, and does not diminish the wealth of anyone else at all.

Why can't Unions survive on their own?
Mitch Daniels signed right to work legislation and union workers protested.
We've had unions in this nation for well over a century.
We've seen the "workers" of the state run a government in the Soviet Union.
With all this historical evidence why can't unions survive without coercion?

My city's sports teams are worse than your city's sports teams.
So, after the Leafs miss the playoffs and the panthers make it. Toronto will hold the record for active playoff drought in the NHL. We sit 4th in the MLB and 6th in the NBA. Eat you heart out Cleveland. This is the worst sports city.

I'm from indy, the only thing we can complain abotu is one bad colts season after a long time of success. But the Pacers are rockin it so its all good.
I don't think any worst sports city could be worst than Buffalo.

In the 90s we went 0-4 in the Super Bowls, sometimes as bad as 52-14.
Yonni (136 D(S))
08 Mar 12 UTC
At least you made it to super bowls...
The leafs haven't made it to a Stanley Cup finals since probable before you parents were born.
Frank (100 D)

I'm from Toronto and I don't think we're that bad. Argos have won a Gray Cup pretty recently, and are usually one of the better teams in the league. Jays are always competitive and have one two world series in the last 20 years. Leafs and Raptors aren't great but our city is still nowhere near as bad as Cleveland or Buffalo. We also don't have a defining gut-wrenching moment like Norwood's wide right or Lebron's decision.

You guys should all watch the Vincent Gallo movie "Buffalo 66," by the way.
Fasces349 (0 DX)

We came one play short in the 90s...
Frank, what about the Gretzky issue? That is pretty fucking defining for me anyway. That series i about the first memories I have of watching hockey.
Yonni (136 D(S))

But, Frank, how old were you when the Jays won?

What if will limit it to worst sports city since 2000
DJEcc24 (246 D)

forbes actually put out a list of the worst sports cities i believe Seattle was placed first this year. Which i disagree with, they don't even consider the MLS. Sounders all the way. But really the Seahawks are on the up and up and the mariners aren;t the worst thing in baseball. Its just a shame about the sonics

DJEcc24 (246 D)

oh and this may not be an entire failure of a city (bulls, blackhawks etc) but i think the award for worst team to be a fan of goes to the Cubs...
Frank (100 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
I was young when the Jays won, but I remember the 93 series pretty well. Even since 2000, we've won a Gray Cup, had the best dunker of all time, and had the best pitcher of this era.

Lando, I dont remember the Gretzky issue at all but I've never been much of a hockey fan.
Yonni (136 D(S))
08 Mar 12 UTC
Had the best dunker of all time who also happened to be a giant douche bag.

Besides, fuck the CFL.

Does suffering through one Bills 'home' game every year help our case?

Conference finals of the 93 Stanely cup.

LA Kings vs Toronto Maple Leafs
Leafs are leading 3-2 in the series. Game is tied at 3 in which Wayne Gretzky (Best player in the world at the time) cuts open Doug Gilmour's face with his stick.

According to the rules of Hockey, any contact with a players stick and an opponents face is 2 minutes, if it draws blood its 5. This drew blood, but because it was Wayne Gretzky who did it, the refs go easy on him.

2 minutes later he outplays the entire Toronto team and scores the goal, this being in over time.

We go back to LA for game 7 and of course loose. However if Gretzky was in box for those 5 minutes the LA couldn't do shit. We would have won on gone on to the stanely cup, which would have been against the Habs, a team we beat every time we met that season...

The 93 cup should have been ours, if it wasn't for the refs choosing to put the MVP ahead of the rules.
Yonni (136 D(S))
08 Mar 12 UTC
I know it's blasphemy to say, but it would have taken a hell of a lot to beat Patrick Roy even if we had made the cup.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
08 Mar 12 UTC
Kerry Fraser was the referee who missed the Gretzky high stick. He admits to blowing the call, but stresses that he did not see it.

The best player in hockey, at that time, was either Doug Gilmour of the Maple Leafs or Sergei Fedorov of the Red Wings, but not Gretzky.

Back to back World Series victories and the second most Stanley Cup championships(after Montreal) take Toronto out of the "worst sports city" argument.
Yonni (136 D(S))

But Mapleleaf, you're of a different generation. You have to understand the frustration that us younger guys would have.
LakersFan (899 D)

Hey, at least you guys don't have that crazy ass ball-hog Kobe Bryant on your team. Even with as many championships as they've won, it's still agony watching the Lakers lose 21-point leads to scrubs like the Wizards, or the Pistons the other night.
Yonni (136 D(S))
08 Mar 12 UTC
Aw, boohoo. I've won championship after championship but I don't like how it's done.
DJEcc24 (246 D)

maybe hsitorically speaking toronto may have won cahmpionships. but if we are talking about the crap cities of sports today then toronto, cleveland and buffalo
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
Haha are you really complaining about Kobe Bryant? One of the best players of all time who has helped/led you to five championships? I'm sorry, I really hate the Lakers, and I hate Kobe as a person, but I have nothing but respect for him as a player.
LakersFan (899 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
80% of the time, he's one of the greatest that's ever lived. But there's plenty of time where Kobe plays the game 1 on 5, and they lose games in the most painful possible ways. I.e. losing a 21 point lead to the lottery-bound Washington Wizards.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
And I think Kansas City has to be up there. I guess Sporting KC/Wizards are somewhat decent, but nothing spectacular. And having watched the Royals and the Chiefs for the past ten years, they are both awful sports organizations. Even the Chiefs division championship only occurred because they played the easiest schedule in the history of the NFL. Also, Kansas City has built an awesome arena, but can't get any NHL or NBA teams to enter town since our teams left in the seventies.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
As for Kobe playing one-on-five, you're right, I'd say there are times he gets selfish, but one man can't blow a twenty-one point lead. Not to mention the fact, yet again, that he has won five championships for LA. Nothing really to complain about there.
LakersFan (899 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
Obviously, almost anyone would take the Laker's record of championships, and particularly playoff appearances in the last 30 years or so, over their team. Except Boston of course.
SacredDigits (102 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
San Diego is a fun one because while the Padres and Chargers take turns at either abjectly sucking or choking at the worst possible times, and they lost their NBA team (which they had in turn taken from Buffalo and ended up having to hand over to a city that already had another NBA team)...most San Diegans don't really give a shit because, come on, you're still living in San Diego.
DJEcc24 (246 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
Sporting KC are definately a great team for american soccer recently. Livestrong is such a nice facility.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
08 Mar 12 UTC
Let me put this into perspective for the many many people out there who absolutely DO NOT GET Toronto's love affair with our Maple Leafs, who never win anything.

All of the people in Toronto, over the age of 50, were kids when the Leafs last won the Cup(I was five). At that time, Montreal had 14 Cups and we had 13. We had won the Stanley Cup 4 out the last 6 years.

So, as a little boy, your good buddy mapleleaf KNEW that his Leafs were in great shape. Even though the Habs had one more Cup, we were on a ROLL right?

Then Montreal wins 10 cups and we win nothing........
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
That is true, Sporting KC is pretty solid, and Livestrong is beautiful, but they haven't won a championship for ten years, and let's face it, soccer is not on the top of most fan's priority lists. I love it, but it doesn't get much press in America.
