you can confirm me too
If it matters, my GR last time was like 75 or so.

What are the expectations around time commitments for the TAs. Like, if I can send one really good message a day to my student, is that what you're looking for?

Also, what about another School of Gunboat?

I would take PlatinumEdge and Antielephantmine off the list. I dont think they ever check the forums and I think both of them are quite busy with other commitments.
@2nd sounds good. I'll let this one get a little more sorted out before I start a new thread.

I think you should keep Antielephantmine in on the grounds that he has one of the better names on the forum.
But the lack of an "a" between the "t" and "m" is starting to bother me.

How does the following criteria sound to everyone?
5 point buy in
WTA
Phase length 36 hours
Join length 3 days
Classic Map, all messages, non-anonymous

A reminder of what we're committing to [plagarizing from Leif]

Students play to the best of their ability, but should be reaching out to their TAs for advice.

Quick note on what TA's are expected to do:
First off, you are not supposed to direct the student on how to move each turn. The job of a TA is to teach the diplomacy, tactics, and strategy aspects of the game as you understand them best. Offer suggestions, tips, identify play styles, options in various situations, and in general coach. The student should make the final decisions and choose his/her path to follow while you offer guidance, suggestions, and constructive critiques of their choices. Most of all you are going to be answering questions from the student. You can do this through PM or through email, whichever method you or your student prefers. Each TA has their own style.

All that is asked of TA's is that you don't just tell your student what to do each turn, and that you commit to being available to provide coaching as needed for the student and to answer any questions the student may have.

Professors offer commentary on the game from what they can see at the end of each game year by viewing the map and public press comments in a SOW threat dedicated to this specific game. More frequent updates are of course welcome, especially in the beginning, but reality is that everyone has a finite amount of time

Shall we TA's sort out who's TA'ing which country so that when the students have all joined they (and we) know who to contact? I'm interested in TA'ing Russia, Germany, England, Italy in that order..
stratagos (3269 D(S))

My preference is anything but Italy. I get my ass handed to me there. Past that, I'll let the others choose first

5 point buy in sounds appropriate. 36 hours sounds good as well. I usually feel 24 is a bit too short and 48 tends to run a bit too long.

I will be driving from upstate New York to Las Vegas on the 22nd of this month. So I'll be away for roughly a day and a half. Will in all likelihood request a pause at that time as I'd hate to not be able to give my full commitment at all times.
Yonni (136 D(S))
12 Jan 12 UTC
I know I'm not playing but I'd suggest longer phases than 36 hrs. Keep in mind that you need time to discuss with your opponents then your TA and then your opponents again. For the more involved phases, I really didn't have time to talk to my TA and we had 48hr phases.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
12 Jan 12 UTC
I agree with the 48 hours
TheJok3r (765 D)
12 Jan 12 UTC
I'd be happy with 48 hours.
Pete U (293 D)
12 Jan 12 UTC
48 hours is about right - especially if people finalise retreats asap. Timezones also play a part, but it also needs to move quite quickly
steephie22 (182 D(S))
12 Jan 12 UTC
i'm easy if it comes to phase time but no shorter then 24 hours and if teh dicussion leads to there you know it from me already: i'm 1 time zone right of England, Holland, don't know which that is...
steephie22 (182 D(S))
12 Jan 12 UTC
however, don't know or this is a mistake but on the first list i'm in the waitlist, on the 2nd i'm in game one...
stratagos (3269 D(S))
12 Jan 12 UTC
steephie, a lot of people didn't respond, so you got bumped into game 1
What's left to TA? I don't mind doing any, really. Am least comfortable with England and most comfortable with France.
gman314 (100 D)
12 Jan 12 UTC
I'm good with the phase length. Either 36 or 48 hours sounds good to me.

Time-wasters who team up with their mates.......
and enter anonymous games and team up against everyone else and usually but not always win. Then they spend all their time making sure they get 17 SCs each before drawing. Then flushed with their 'success' they start doing it in further matches. I just want to play a game with genuine competition where people win on merit and not because they teamed up with their schoolmates. How can this be stopped or how can I prevent getting stuck in games with these imbeciles?

i don't care.

what happens if you're playing a non-live game and the tides have turned, and it's clear your alliance will lose, and none of the opposition will defect? for live games, i usually play them through because it doesn't take too long to end them, but who wants to spend weeks playing a game that you will eventually lose?

Does anyone else ever get frustrated at the lack of international recognition of Somaliland? I find myself coming back to this subject over and over, trying to find any good reason to not recognize a democratic state in Africa with a history of free and fair elections, non-violent transitions of power, and relatively stable economic growth.

DATC and the known errors on this site
I took a look at the DATC tests here (http://webdiplomacy.net/datc.php) and noticed that 6.H (Retreating), 6.I (Building) and 6.J (Civil Disorder and Disbands) were all missing. Two of the most prominent errors on this site fall in this area (ending games before retreats and incorrect civil disorder disbands).

Failed move?!
Basicly the situation was that while playing as turkey in the late 1901 I moved my army from Bul to Gre and another one from Con to Bul via land, supported by a fleet in the black sea, but somehow the move failed and the army order is referred as hold in the orders log. My other army emptied Bul and noone else attacked there so why did the move fail? Any ideas?

website does not always display all games / how do you resign a game?
The website does not always display all 4 of my games at the top. Therefore, I got into a game on the late end of the turn and got attacked because I couldn't negotiate from the beginning, and it is ruined once again. This would not have happened if I could have resigned the first 2 games. They continue to display at the top of the screen even though I want to quit. How do you resign / surrender?
Overall, I have had a much worse experience with this website than I expected.
