Please, please finalize orders in gunboats
I know this comes up occasionally on the forum, but I'll throw in my whiny two cents. Why make everyone wait 24 hours when you already know what you are doing with your three little units?

AMD vs. Intel
I personally prefer AMD. Great quality for a good price and the Bulldozer core is amazing. But there are those who prefer Intel. Discuss it in here.

-_- :-( Poor choice. It will waste memory. What are your system's specs?
damian (675 D)

If you are perfectly aware then make statements that reflect as such. Linux is limited in some ways. But is neither "so very limited" nor "nowhere near as good as Windows "

Making an informed choice is fine, an choice based on vague general and partially incorrect statements no so much.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Waste of space? I'm using 50GB of a 200GB drive. I have tons of free space.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
Yes, but I am very much informed.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
I suppose. But still. You might need that space if you plan on using the computer for awhile. Especially if it is an i7 cpu and those are pretty new.
damian (675 D)
22 Nov 11 UTC
Great, then stick with correct statements in disparaging other operating systems. ;)

Also what's with people who call space on the hard drive, memory. I've always found that kind of weird. Given that I call RAM, memory.

Linux is in nearly every network appliance at botht he home and corporate level. Got a wifi router or just a cable modem? Odds are it is running Linux. All OSes have their place and if you want a fast dedicated process, Linux is your baby. Windows is almost as bloated as Mac. But if you want an all-purpose full server class machine or even a gaming and development machine, I'd stick with windows. And if you want to do graphic arts and marketing/advertising work, go with a Mac. They *all* have their place just as a hammer, screwdriver, and socket set.

I call RAM random access memory.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@damian

I agree. RAM is memory. HDD is storage. However, in context, I knew D33 was referring to HDD and not RAM.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 11 UTC
Well HDD is not memory. Memory is RAM. HDD maybe solid state of platter based, but it is not volatile in that it can maintain it's current state even when not powered. RAM memory cannot and is what is referred to as the generic term "memory" in the industry.. Then there is ROM which is still memory but smaller and just holds core operating instructions to find the boot sector and recognize various dedicated components on the device in question.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Nov 11 UTC
@Draug

I'm agreeing with you completely. I'm just saying, it was clear that when D33 said "memory" he meant HDD storage, since nothing else would make sense.

@abgemacht - I have to take exception to your "serious coding" bash at Windows. I live in Windows and code in Visual Studio 2010 and MS SQL Server all day long. I'm a 30 year veteran developer and write some pretty low level code to hook directly to the machine on occasion as well as API calls to a variety of services and other applications. It *is* very much serious coding and it is done completely in Windows.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 11 UTC
P.S. I just noticed that bash.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Nov 11 UTC
Which is why, when I replied to him, I said I had "tons of free space" not "tons of free memory"

@D33

I have a desktop with over 3TB of storage. I'm not running out of space any time soon. If I really do need space on my laptop, I'll just delete the partition. No big deal.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 11 UTC
Nice drive space on your desktop, abgemacht. I live with a 350 GB on may latop and an additon 500GB USB attached to my dock here at work.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
Well, the desktop 3TB is impressive. Do the partition there if you insist.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

What is its CPU?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Nov 11 UTC
@Draug

But, would you agree that any languages not developed for windows by MS are better on Linux?

Also, would you agree that remote accessing computers (ie ssh) on windows is a bitch compared to linux?
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
My HDD total storage space is a 640 gb hard drive and a 250gig.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@D33

Why does the CPU of my desktop matter? It's an AMD. Don't remember the model. Short of HW failures, I should be able to keep my current rig for another 5 years with only an upgrade to the GPU.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
That is what I want to do with a Bulldozer PC. Build it to last me through my Bachelor's degree.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Nov 11 UTC
I *do* have an ubuntu partition on my desktop, but I never use it because all I use my desktop for is gaming and watching movies.

On my laptop, it would be useful, so that I could ssh into my lab machine when I need to code on the go. Why are you so against me dual booting my laptop?
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 11 UTC
@abgemacht - No. I develop in C and C++ for core stuff just as efficiently and with a better RAD environment under Windows and my Java work is the same whether ot be in Windows or Linux. The RAD environments under Windows are every bit as good as those under Linuc (and yes, I have coded in various RADs under Linux). As far as remoting... I Remote in all the time. Setup was easy and the tools to do it are free.

Linux, to me, even with Gnome or KDE, is primarily an appliance tool. Windows is a business tool. And MacOS is a presentation/graphic designer/student tool.

I have no control over what you do. I just hate Ubuntu on principle.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Nov 11 UTC
@Draug

I use it mostly for movies and TV shows. Although, recently I've gotten lazy and just stream from various cloud services now.

@Draug

What do you use for remote computing? I can never find something good.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Nov 11 UTC
@D33

And what principle is that?
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

That Windows is the best operating system.

lol. You are such a tool.

Remote Desktop connectivity is built into every Windows 7 above the "Home" level and the client is in *all* versions of Windows 7. I can take complete control of my laptop at the office from home (except my home machine is DOA at the moment, hence looking at the Windows 7 tablet).
